Sunday Salon: Squeezing in a Little Reading Here & There

The grandparents long ago returned to their own homes and Anjin to work. Mouse and I have the house to ourselves during the day, the furkids our only company. You might think that would leave me lots of free time to write blog posts and comment on blogs, especially considering my little girl is only interested in eating, sleeping and having a clean diaper at this point (although, she does likes the occasional song, going on walks and watching her mother do a little back stretching dance). As those of you who were once first time parents know, despite her seemingly simple life, I rarely have a moment to do much of anything but meet her needs at this early stage. A newborn, especially mine, eats A LOT.

Even so, I am able to read while I nurse Mouse (or watch TV). And can I just say how much I love my smart phone? Who would have thought? I can keep up with my e-mail, read your blogs, stay on top of the news, and keep in touch with my husband, family and friends (who are probably tired of the daily photos I take of the baby with my phone). I may not be able to write a coherent book review or spend time on my actual computer, but I am not totally disconnected. I take what I can get in short spurts. I only wish I could somehow better manage the growing laundry piles!

I especially love that I am able to read. Once Mouse is awake more often and more interactive, I know I will have to sacrifice some of that reading time. For now though, I am taking full advantage.

Right before and after Mouse was born, I finished off the Mercy Thompson urban fantasy series books by Patricia Briggs I had on hand. I flew through Blood Bound, Iron Kissed, Bone Crossed and Silver Borne, reading one right after the other. Mercy Thompson owns her own car repair shop and is an ace mechanic. She also is a walker, someone who can turn into a coyote at will. She mingles with werewolves, vampires and other supernatural beings. Trouble always seems to be around the corner and Mercy and friends are quick to step in and put a stop to it. Mercy has many of the typical urban fantasy heroine characteristics, and yet she stands out on her own. I love the world Patricia Briggs has created and enjoy spending time with the various characters. Unfortunately, I don't have a copy of her latest release, River Marked, and so am now officially one behind in the series. When I get my hands on that one (probably not until it's out in paperback), I will definitely be jumping right in.

After finishing Patricia Briggs' Silver Borne, I was still itching to read urban fantasy. Unfortunately most of my TBR books are packed away. I did have Lori Handeland's Any Given Doomsday handy, however, and so decided to give that a try. The book is the first in the Phoenix Chronicles featuring psychic Elizabeth Phoenix. Life has already proven to be tough for Liz but when her beloved foster mother dies leaving her a special gift, her life suddenly has become much more difficult--and dangerous. The fate of the world lays on her shoulders. The novel got off to a slow start for me, and I admit to considering setting it aside. I persevered, however, and enjoyed the book in the end. Mostly. It took me awhile to warm up to the main character, and I was reminded of the later books in the Laurel K. Hamilton Anita Blake series where sex is used as a means to an end. I wasn't quite sold on that idea. Vague, I know, but I don't want to totally spoil the book for those who haven't read it. I do like the world Lori Handeland has created as well as the many supernatural characters she introduced in this first book in the series. She definitely offers a different take on the genre. Will I pick up the next book in the series? The jury is still out. It might be worth it to see where the author takes the story next.

I then settled into Linda Castillo's Sworn to Silence, which I had heard so much about. The first in a crime fiction series featuring a police chief with an Amish background. A serial killer is targeting young women in the area in ways that seems eerily like vicious murders that occurred in the same area years before. Only, the police chief knows that can't be possible--or could it? The mystery grabbed me from the start and didn't let go until I reached the end. Kate Burkholder is a complex heroine with a dark secret from her past. I instantly took to her and look forward to reading the next book in the series.

My next attempts at reading were not quite as successful. Reruns of Law and Order were more enticing. It isn't that the books were bad; rather I was trying to read review books, books that require more energy and thought than I have to spare right now. I should have realized that from the start, but it isn't like I am working on all cylinders at this point. Exhaustion has that effect after all. So, when Anjin suggested I dive into the select few TBR books I had purposefully not packed and just enjoy reading for the sake of reading, no strings attached, I decided to do just that.

I wasn't sure George R.R. Martin's A Game of Thrones, the first in an epic fantasy series, was the book to pick up and read (it's size alone is rather daunting), but Anjin said he was sure it was just what I was looking for. It couldn't be because he wants me to read it before the HBO miniseries airs later this month, right? I should know better than to doubt my husband though. I am only 200 pages in but am enjoying every minute of it.

Mouse is ready for another feeding, and I can't say no to my adorable little girl. Do drop me a comment and let me know what you have been up to and what you've been reading!

2011: A Year in Review

Two thousand eleven was the year for comfort reads. While I did read a few thought provoking books, I spent most of the year craving brain candy. When I look over the titles of the books I read this year, I can pinpoint what was happening in my life at that particular time.

The Man Who Loved Books Too Much was a fitting book to read as I gave away hundreds of my own books, preparing for my move. I read most of the Patricia Briggs's books, beginning with Moon Called, during my final days of pregnancy when I needed something fast paced and deliciously good to distract me from the million thoughts going through my mind. I read A Game of Thrones during those seemingly endless cluster feedings. Bloodline was the first book I read in our new house. And Harley Jane Kozak's Wollie series was what jump started my reading again when I was beginning to think I might never read again. Madelyn Alt's The Trouble With Magic saw me through right after my father's death. It's only been in the last few months I feel as if I have found my reading groove again--even if in a limited capacity.

I am breaking from my usual tradition of posting my stats and own special book categories this year. My record keeping fell by the wayside, and I haven't the energy or time to try and pull it all together at this late date. Instead, I am turning to an end of the year survey that is going around thanks to Jamie from The Perpetual Page Turner.

1. Best Book You Read In 2011?

Looking over the titles of the books I read this year, I an struggling over which book would take top honors. I read a little less than half of what I read last year, and so I hesitate to make a top ten list like I normally do. Instead, I will share the titles of a few books that most stood out for me:

A Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin managed to hold me captive despite it's length at a time when my attention span was shot because of sleep deprivation and constant interruptions. It is the first in an epic fantasy series. The characters got under my skin and I fell under the spell of the world so completely. The HBO miniseries based on the book was pretty awesome too.

A Thousand Lives: The Untold Story of Hope, Deception and Survival at Jonestown by Julia Scheeres was not only well researched but also extremely well written. I learned so much I hadn't known before about the Jonestown Massacre, and about Jim Jones and his followers in general. There is much more to it than what meets the eye.

While Patrick Ness's The Chaos Walking Trilogy amazed me in its detail and world building as a whole, the first book in the trilogy was by far my favorite. The Knife of Never Letting Go was much more than I expected in terms of depth and heart. There was one scene in particular that was heartwrenching--I nearly threw my nook across the room.

Witchlanders by Lena Coakley was so very good. The writing, the characters, the setting , and the story . . . There wasn't anything I didn't like about it. It definitely is among my favorites this year.

Linda Castillo's Sworn to Silence is perhaps my favorite mystery of the year. The protagonist is a complex character and her past played a particularly interesting role in this first in the series. I liked the setting, particularly the Amish cultural aspects and the conflicts that arose as a result.

2. Most Disappointing Book?

The Vampire Diaries: The Awakening by L.J. Smith wins this category hands down. I wanted to like it because the television show is a guilty pleasure of mine, but the book fell completely flat for me.

3. Best series you discovered in 2011?

I finally got around to reading Patricia Briggs's Mercy Thompson series and it quickly became a favorite. I am anxious to read more by the author.

4. Favorite new authors you discovered in 2011?

I think most of the authors I read this year were new to me. Among my favorites would have to be Patricia Briggs, Lena Coakley, Linda Castillo, Patrick Ness, and George R.R. Martin.

5. Best book that was out of your comfort zone or was a new genre for you?

Hmm. I suppose I'll have to go with a book outside of my comfort zone on this one since I didn't tackle any new to me genres. Bossypants by Tina Fey--not only did I listen to the audio book (way outside of my comfort zone), but I generally avoid celebrity memoirs. I really liked Bossypants; I laughed all the way through it and have been recommending it to people right and left.

6. Most thrilling, unputdownable book in 2011?

Patrick Ness's Choas Walking trilogy had me from the first page. I began with The Knife of Never Letting Go, raced through The Ask and The Answer and devoured Monsters of Men.

7. Book you most anticipated in 2011?

I am afraid books were the furthest things from my mind when it came to anticipation. Baby. New House. These were things I anticipated. I did read several books that were published in 2011, however, all of which I enjoyed to different degrees.

8. Most memorable character in 2011?

Todd Hewitt and Viola from The Chaos Walking Trilogy captured my heart, but then, so did Arya Stark, the youngest daughter of Edward Stark, of A Game of Thrones. All three faced difficult times and were forced to grow up too fast. They each had an innocence about them and had good hearts.

9. Most beautifully written book read in 2011?

Tigerheart by Peter David probably comes the closest. I loved how the author wrote his novel in the spirit of J.M. Barrie's Peter Pan. It was poetic and fun. I felt myself transported right into the pages of the book, lost in the descriptions of places and characters.

10. Book you can't believe you waited UNTIL 2011 to finally read?

Moon Called
by Patricia Briggs was so good! I am still kicking myself for putting off reading the series all these years.

11. Book That Had A Scene In It That Had You Reeling And Dying To Talk To Somebody About It? (a WTF moment, an epic revelation, a steamy kiss, etc. etc.) Be careful of spoilers!

I wanted to talk about The Chaos Walking trilogy with a passion you wouldn't believe. Only, everyone who had already read it seemed all talked out and those who hadn't yet--well, I couldn't exactly talk to them about it, could I? Ho hum. I almost made my husband read it but then decided against it. With my luck, he'd hate it and then I'd feel bad.

Another book that had me chomping at the bit to discuss was A Thousand Lives by Julia Scheeres. I actually did talk about it quite a bit as I was reading it--to my coworkers, whether they wanted to listen or not.

Looking Ahead

Two thousand twelve will no doubt be an eventful year. Soon the finalists for the Indie Lit Awards will be announced, and I will be busy catching up with the top five mystery nominees before the final votes are tallied. I will be hosting my first challenge, the Merely Mystery Reading Challenge, and I hope to join a few others just for the fun of it.

I predict my reading will follow a similar pattern this coming year as it did this year. I have enjoyed reading books from my own stacks and so want to keep the review books to a minimum. Also, I imagine I will be too busy chasing a certain little Mouse all over to read quite as much as I might like!

What were some of your favorite books and authors read this year? Did anything stand out above the rest? What are your goals for this coming year?

Changes

I mentioned before I might try my hand at writing about more than just books and movies here at Musings of a Bookish Kitty. I hope to do some of that this coming year. I would love to hear your ideas about what you might like me to write about. I confess I am not the best at brainstorming on my own so could use a little friendly guidance. Pretty please?

Also, I am going to start referring to my reviews as my bookish thoughts. I have never been good at writing a formal review and, really, my reviews tend to be merely my thoughts and reflections about how a book touched me or what I thought of it. Saying it's just my "bookish thought" takes some of the pressure off as well--at least psychologically. It gives me a little more freedom, if you will. Semantics, I know.

Before I close, I want to say again how grateful I am to those of you who are still keeping up with my blog. My posts have been sporadic this year, sometimes few and far between. I have not been able blog hop the way I would have liked which meant a lot less commenting on my favorite blogs. I truly appreciate your support this year and look forward to being more involved this next year. Thank you and have a very Happy New Year!

Weekly Mews: November Wrap-Up, What I Am Reading Now & What Should I Read Next? (December's TBR List Poll)

I am linking up to the Sunday Post hosted by the wonderful Kim of Caffeinated Book Reviewer, where participants recap our week, talk about what we are reading, share any new books that have come our way, and whatever else we want to talk about. As well as Stacking the Shelves hosted by the great Team Tynga's Reviews and Marlene of Reading Reality a meme in which participants share what new books came their way recently.

December promises to be a busy month, and I imagine I will not have as much computer time as I would like, especially toward the middle and last half of the month. Between family coming in from out of town and all of Mouse's activities, including a big holiday dance showcase, free time will be hard to come by. I am happy to say that my holiday cards are in the mail, and I am officially all done with the Christmas shopping. I am still waiting on a couple of packages, but the money is spent, and so I figure it counts as being done anyway.

I put together a bookish Advent calendar this year for my daughter, wrapping several of Mouse's Christmas books. I had mentioned the idea to her, asking if she would want to do something like that, but explained we would be using books we already owned. It just so happens she has over 24 holiday-themed books. I have always wanted to do something like this. I think it will be a lot of fun!

Did your December get off to a good start? What are you most looking forward to this month

November In Review:

My mother paid us a visit in early November, and Anjin and I got to go on a rare date. We decided to see the new Blade Runner movie, as the original is one of my husband's favorites.

Soccer season came to an end. Mouse had fun at the season end party. I think we are all glad for the chance to sleep in on Saturday mornings again.

While my reading got off to a slow start the beginning of November, it picked up with my break from blogging Thanksgiving week. Although I had to work most of that week, I took advantage of any spare time I had to read. Mouse and I organized her books and wrapped Christmas presents. We also managed to get the house mostly decorated for Christmas. We still haven't put up the tree, but will likely be doing that this weekend.

Thanksgiving Day brought some bad news. Ten or so years ago, my mother had been diagnosed with breast cancer. Doctors were able to successfully remove all malignant growth. Unfortunately, it has returned. My mom went in for surgery the first of December, and we will know late next week whether the margins are clear.

In more bad news, although much less so, we sprung a leak and I spent a good part of one day this past week waiting for the plumber to come out. Fortunately it wasn't a terribly expensive fix, but it still cost a pretty penny.

My carpal tunnel syndrome seems to be flaring up in both wrists. It has made life at work and at home a bit more challenging considering how much time I spend on the computer. Add being so busy with other things, it makes me a not very good commenter as of late.

Getting back to my reading, I am actually quite proud of how will I did both quality and quantity wise in November. I read some great books--none were disappointing.

Here is what I read last month:
  • Mr. Dickens and His Carol by Samantha Silva
  • Lust and Wonder by Augusten Burroughs
  • Behind Closed Doors by B.A. Paris
  • Snowfall on Haven Point by RaeAnne Thayne
  • Christmas At Little Beach Street Bakery by Jenny Colgan
  • Wonder Woman: Warbringer by Leigh Bardugo (audio)

Non-Book Review Posts in November:

How did your November shape up reading wise? What was your favorite book you read in November?

*

New to My Shelves:

I purchased a few e-books and one audiobook this past month that I couldn't resist:

The Breakdown by P.A. Paris
The Good Samaritan by John Marrs
Betrayed  (#3 Black Hat Thriller) by Karen E. Olson
The Hating Game by Sally Thorne (audio)
Starstruck (the Cowboys of Cold Creek) by RaeAnne Thayne
Shadowed (#2 Black Hat Thriller) by Karen E. Olson
The Lost Prayers of Ricky Graves by James Han Mattson
Cursed by Fire (#1 Immortal Brother) by Jacqueline Frank

Have you read any of these? What did you think? What new books did you add to your shelves in November?

*

What I Am Reading: I am currently reading Shadowed by Karen E. Olson. Oh my gosh! Talk about suspenseful! The book hasn't let up since page one. I am sure I will be finishing the book this weekend. Probably Saturday if not tonight. My e-reader has been acting up (I'm not sure if it is the actual device or the book itself) which is the only reason I have not been able to finish it yet). Next up is another Christmas themed book. Maybe The Christmas Room by Catherine Anderson.

What I Am Listening To: I just finished listening to Leigh Bardugo's Wonder Woman: Warbringer and haven't yet started another audio book. It always seems to take me a while to start another one after finishing one. I am not sure which one will catch my attention next.

What I Am Watching: I am all caught up with The Walking Dead. At least until Sunday's episode airs. It has been a rather lackluster season so far. I am enjoying The Voice and watching too many Christmas Hallmark movies.

What I Am Worried About: Besides the global and societal issues I have no control over, everything I have to do this month. All the places I have to be. All the money I have already and still have to spend. How I will be able to get my daughter to this or that event. And if I will survive this whole dance holiday showcase ordeal. Dance/Stage mom: I am not. Work. My mom. Especially my mom. And what are we going to serve for Christmas dinner?!

What I Am Looking Forward To: Christmas Day and the day after.

What I Am Grateful For:  My family. My mom. My husband. Especially my husband. And, of course, my daughter. And my loving and playful cat who is such a comfort.

Tell me about what you have been up to! What are you reading, listening to and watching? Do you have anything planned for this coming week?

Thank you for helping me decide what book from my TBR collection I should read next:

My TBR List is a meme hosted by the awesome Michelle at Because Reading. It’s a fun way to choose a book from your TBR pile to read. The 1st Saturday of every month, I will list 3 books I am considering reading and take a poll as to which you think I should read. I will read the winner that month, and my review will follow (unfortunately, not likely in the same month, but eventually--that's all I can promise).

At the moment I type this, there is a cat attacking my head. Rather, rubbing herself all over me and clawing at my head. It is making blogging a little difficult at the moment, but I shall persevere. I have mysteries on the brain this month and chose three different types of crime fiction novels for you to choose from. They all offer something a bit different from one another, and I would love to know which one you think  I should read this month.

Death Below Stairs (Kat Holloway Mysteries #1) by Jennifer Ashley ~ I love a good historical mystery, and this one is irresistible sounding, don't you think?

Victorian class lines are crossed when cook Kat Holloway is drawn into a murder that reaches all the way to the throne.
Highly sought-after young cook Kat Holloway takes a position in a Mayfair mansion and soon finds herself immersed in the odd household of Lord Rankin. Kat is unbothered by the family’s eccentricities as long as they stay away from her kitchen, but trouble finds its way below stairs when her young Irish assistant is murdered.

Intent on discovering who killed the helpless kitchen maid, Kat turns to the ever-capable Daniel McAdam, who is certainly much more than the charming delivery man he pretends to be. Along with the assistance of Lord Rankin’s unconventional sister-in-law and a mathematical genius, Kat and Daniel discover that the household murder was the barest tip of a plot rife with danger and treason—one that’s a threat to Queen Victoria herself.
[Goodreads Summary]

The Woman in the Window by A.J. Finn ~ Doesn't this sound intriguing? I think so!
 What did she see?

It’s been ten long months since Anna Fox last left her home. Ten months during which she has haunted the rooms of her old New York house like a ghost, lost in her memories, too terrified to step outside.

Anna’s lifeline to the real world is her window, where she sits day after day, watching her neighbours. When the Russells move in, Anna is instantly drawn to them. A picture-perfect family of three, they are an echo of the life that was once hers.

But one evening, a frenzied scream rips across the silence, and Anna witnesses something no one was supposed to see. Now she must do everything she can to uncover the truth about what really happened. But even if she does, will anyone believe her? And can she even trust herself?
[Goodreads Summary]

A Murder for the Books (Blue Ridge Library Mysteries #1) by Victoria Gilbert ~ Who can resist a mystery featuring a librarian? I know I can't!

Fleeing a disastrous love affair, university librarian Amy Webber moves in with her aunt in a quiet, historic mountain town in Virginia. She quickly busies herself with managing a charming public library that requires all her attention with its severe lack of funds and overabundance of eccentric patrons. The last thing she needs is a new, available neighbor whose charm lures her into trouble.

Dancer-turned-teacher and choreographer Richard Muir inherited the farmhouse next door from his great-uncle, Paul Dassin. But town folklore claims the house’s original owner was poisoned by his wife, who was an outsider. It quickly became water under the bridge, until she vanished after her sensational 1925 murder trial. Determined to clear the name of the woman his great-uncle loved, Richard implores Amy to help him investigate the case. Amy is skeptical until their research raises questions about the culpability of the town’s leading families... including her own.

When inexplicable murders plunge the quiet town into chaos, Amy and Richard must crack open the books to reveal a cruel conspiracy and lay a turbulent past to rest in A Murder for the Books, the first installment of Victoria Gilbert’s Blue Ridge Library mysteries.  [Goodreads Summary]

Have you read any of these? Which one do you think I should lose myself in this month?

Thank you for voting! I hope you all have a wonderful December and Happy Reading!

Readers Imbibing Peril V Challenge

With the opening line “It was a dark and stormy night. . .” begins the fifth annual Readers Imbibing Peril (R.I.P.) Challenge hosted by Carl V. of Stainless Steel Droppings. Participants are asked to read books that fall into the following categories

Mystery
Suspense
Thriller
Dark Fantasy
Gothic
Horror
Supernatural

Depending on the challenge level, readers can choose their own level of commitment. There's little stress and a whole lot of creepy fun. The challenge began on September 1st and will end on October 31st. What better way to welcome in the autumn season than by reading books that keep the reader on the edge of his or her seat?

In regards to Peril The First, which is the level I am taking on, the host, Carl V., writes:
Read four books, any length, that you feel fits my very broad definition of scary. It could be Stephen King or Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Ian Fleming or Edgar Allan Poe…or anyone in between.
I confess my mood at the moment is leaning more towards mystery/suspense novels, but I hope to make an effort to read books from a couple of the other categories as well. I haven't quite settled on which four books I will be reading for the challenge, however, I couldn't resist making a tentative list of books I am considering, with room to read other books not listed as well.

White Night by Jim Butcher
Sworn to Silence by Linda Castillo
Cranford by Elizabeth Gaskell
Heart-Shaped Box by Joe Hill
The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane by Katherine Howe
Let the Right One In by John Ajvide Lindqvist
I'd Know You Anywhere by Laura Lippman
The Devil's Company by David Liss
I Am Legend by Richard Matheson
Her Fearful Symmetry by Audrey Niffenegger
Of Bees and Mist by Erick Setiawan
Daughters of the Witching Hill by Mary Sharratt
Drood by Dan Simmons
Echoes From the Dead by Johan Theorin
Fingersmith by Sarah Waters

I also plan to sprinkle my short story reading with peril filled tales throughout the next two months. I am not committing to reading a set number of short stories, at this time. If time permits, I'd love to read Joe Hill's 20th Century Ghosts, even if just a couple of stories from the collection. I have another ghost story collection that is mighty tempting as well, The Virago Book of Ghost Stories, edited by Richard Dalby I might give a try. Perhaps another Edgar Allan Poe story. I never tire of those!

Are you joining in the R.I.P. V Challenge too? If so, What are you most looking forward to reading?

What books or short stories would you recommend for a challenge like this? Have you read any of the ones on my tentative list? If so, what did you think?

Where Is Your Bookmark? (Sworn Virgin/Long & Short Books/Friday Fun)

I polished off two books this week while on vacation and am about to start another one. I am leaning strongly towards the historical fiction novel set in the early 1900's, The Sworn Virgin by Kristopher Dukes, about a young woman who avoids being sold into marriage by calling on an old tradition to remain a virgin for the rest of her life so that she can live independently with many of the rights of a man.

A weekly meme where readers share the first sentence of the book they are reading and say what they think. Hosted by the wonderful Gillion Dumas of Rose City Reader.

The body lay motionless. His once bright, brown eyes now as dull as the sucking mud beneath him, much like the sopping footpath they had traveled to reach this strange town. Thick blood flooded his white shirt from the deep, black hole in his chest. Eleanora flinched as a tall, craggy-faced man touched her arm, telling her this was not something a young woman should see.
The author jumps right into the action of the novel with the first sentence in the novel. The rest of the paragraph only lays bare what we already know. Someone is dead. I was immediately pulled in with this opening, and cannot wait to read more.

A weekly meme in which readers share a random sentence or two from page 56 or 56% of the book they are reading. Hosted by the wonderful Freda of Freda's Voice.

"I want to speak with the elders--no, the chief of the town," she said. She would find this shooter and make him pay for what he had done. When the elders found out who had been shot . . . Her tone was hard, but not brittle. She would not be a stupid hysterical woman. She would be calm as Baba had taught her to be. She wiped her eyes and took a deep breath, squaring her shoulders. "Now, please. Take me now." [pg 57]

Eleanora is clearly upset about the death, but I like that she is trying to be strong and take action. She isn't one to sit back and let things happen to and around her from the sounds of it.

What do you think so far? Would you keep reading?

Everyone has a favorite and then we also have something we dislike. Like a coin, there are two sides to every question. Each week, Carrie at The Butterfly Reads and Laura from Blue Eye Books ask participants to list what they like and don't like about that week's topic.

This week's topic is Book you've enjoyed with the most/least pages.

Coming in at 1,439 pages, The Stand by Stephen King, was a surprisingly fast book to read, and I enjoyed it.  On the other end of the spectrum, (excluding children's books and graphic novels) is Wet Silence: Poems about Hindu Widows by Sweta Srivastava Vikram which was only 82 pages long. It's a beautiful and emotional collection of poems.

What is a book you enjoyed with the most pages? The least pages?

Every Friday Coffee Addicted Writer from Coffee Addicted Writer poses a question which participants respond on their own blogs within the week (Friday through Thursday). They then share their links at the main site and visit other participants blogs.

Have you ever read a book written in a foreign language you might be fluent in, and then read the same book in English?
I enjoy reading books that have been translated into English, especially crime fiction. I wish I was so gifted as to know more than one language. Alas, I am only fluent in English.

What about you?
*

Every Friday Ellen from 15andmeowing.com and Ann from McGuffy’s Reader get together to host the Friendly Fill-Ins. You can be serious or funny--the idea is just to have fun.

1. Over-worrying is a waste of time, and yet I do it all the time.

2. My favorite app is the Inoreader app, which I use to track most of the book blogs I follow.

3. My first car was a Neon Dodge. I named it Danica, but eventually switched its name to Betty.

4. The best car I ever owned is my current car because it is still running.

I hope you all have a wonderful weekend! Be sure and tell me what you are reading and are up to!

Sunday Salon: 100 Best Beach Books Ever

The summer season is not all that different for me than the rest of the year. I go to work every day just as I always have. The weather is warmer, certainly. And the sun is out longer. I may take a vacation or I may not. My reading pretty much stays the same regardless of the season.

I suppose that is why I have never fully appreciated the term "beach read". When I first heard it, I took it at its literal definition. A book you would want to read on the beach, one you would not mind getting sand between the pages. And I suppose that is, in part, where it got its start. In a broader sense, I think quite a few people think of "beach reads" as light reading, those books that don't require your full attention or much in the way brain power. However, I've discovered that there are those who choose to think of "beach reads" as those more serious tomes they can finally pick up and give their full attention to. National Public Radio (NPR) conducted a survey recently to see what books their audience would select as the best beach reads. As you can see, the 100 Best Beach Books Ever list has books that span a wide spectrum.

What does a "beach read" mean to you? What kinds of books would you take along with you on a vacation? Any thoughts about NPR's list?
