Weekly Mews: Out with April and In With May/May TBR List Poll (Please Vote For My Next Read!)

I am linking up to the Sunday Post hosted by Kim of Caffeinated Book Reviewer, where participants recap our week, talk about what we are reading, share any new books that have come our way, and whatever else we want to talk about. I am also linking The Sunday Salon hosted by Deb Nance of Readerbuzz where participants discuss what they are reading and other bookish topics. I am linking up to Nicole of Feed Your Addiction's Monthly Wrap-Up Post, where any book bloggers who write monthly wrap-up posts can link up and visit other bloggers to see what they have been reading.   I am linking to Stacking the Shelves hosted by Team Tynga's Reviews and Marlene of Reading Reality a meme in which participants share what new books came their way recently.

New to the Shelves:

The Easter Bunny leaves books in our baskets each year, and this year was no different:

Voices: The Final Hours of Joan of Arc by David Elliott (for me)
The Magic of the Unicorn (Choose Your Own Adventure #51) by Deborah Lerme Goodman, illustrated by Ron Wing (for Mouse)

A preorder purchase with a gift card (I was waiting for the paperback):

Circe by Madeline Miller

And a couple of just because purchases in support of our local bookstores:

The Great Alone by Kristin Hannah

Best Friends by Shannon Hale, illustrated by LeUyen Pham (for Mouse)

Have you read any of these? Did you add any new books to your shelves this past month? If so, which ones? Would you recommend them?

What I Am Currently Reading: I currently am reading A Spell for Trouble (An Enchanted Bay Mystery #1) by Esme Addison. I read the first chapter during my lunch break yesterday and am sure I will enjoy it. I had hoped to get in another chapter or two before bed last night, but I was so tired and could barely keep my eyes open. I think this may just be the right book for me right now. I'm looking forward to reading more later today.

Mouse is deep into Best Friends by Shannon Hale and LeUyen Pham. I bought the book for her on a whim, knowing she liked Hale and Pham's Princess in Black series. I had not realized it was a second book in a series at the time. Mouse is loving Best Friends, and so I have put in an order for the first book, Real Friends, through out local indie bookstore. They are struggling right now, and I want to do what I can to support them.

What I Am Watching: We are continuing through the Marvel movies, albeit slowly. We most recently watched Thor: The Dark World movie, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Guardians of the Galaxy,  and Avengers: The Age of Ultron movie. I think next up for us is Antman. We are caught up with the Masked Singer for the time being. I finished watching the Vampire Diaries series a couple weeks ago, and really liked how things were wrapped up. I cannot remember if there was any controversy surrounding the ending. I had not paid that much attention at the time since I was not watching the show at that point. I want to watch The Originals next, but think I need a break from that world for the moment.

Off the Blog: It was a rough week on all fronts. I will just leave it there.

We finished our third week of distance learning. I worked from home all but one day of the week, in which I had to go into the office (does anyone else who has to wear a face mask all day feel like they are still wearing one long after they take it off?). Dance classes and rehearsals continue online.

Some positives: I finally got a good night of sleep last night. I fell asleep right away, didn't have any bad dreams that I remember, and did not wake up frequently. Mouse and I received a couple of books in the mail that I had ordered. The biggest surprise of all was the early Mother's Day gift my husband gave me--a new laptop. My previous laptop served me well for 9 years, but the hard drive was tired and did not want to work anymore. So far I am loving the new one.

The coworker who prefers to nap on the wall of her cubicle
(she purposefully knocks it down so she can lay on the netted window)

Lunch break visit--maintaining social distancing, of course

 My supervisor

Nina is making sure the cuddle gang is in place for when the girl makes an appearance.

Here is what I finished reading in April:
  • Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty
  • Dog Songs by Mary Oliver
  • Sticks and Stones (Upside Down Magic, #2) by Sarah Mlynowski, Lauren Myracle & Emily Jenkins
  • Girls Like Us by Elizabeth Hazen
  • Inside Out & Back Again by Thanhaa Lai
  • Starbreaker (Endeavor, #2) by Amanda Bouchet
It was a dismal reading month number's wise. Although, that is not fair to the great books I actually did manage to read.

This Past April In Reading Mews:

Tell me what you have been up to! What are you reading, listening to and watching? How was your April? Do you have anything planned for this month?

Everyone has a favorite and then we also have something we dislike. Like a coin, there are two sides to every question. Each week, Carrie at The Butterfly Reads and Laura from Blue Eye Books ask participants to list what they like and don't like about that week's topic.

This week's topic is Best/Worst Read of April 2020

I did not dislike anything I read in April. I want to be clear about that. Of all my reads, the one that left me a bit disappointed was Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty. I think it was a combination of the timing as well as my expectations given how many people I know loved it. I still enjoyed Big Little Lies and would recommend it. I just did not love it.

Choosing a "Best of April" is harder because there were two that particularly stood out. If I had to pick one, I am going with Inside Out & Back Again by Thanhha Lai. I will be reviewing this one later this month, but both my daughter and I really enjoyed reading it together.
What were your favorite and least favorite books read it April?

Every Friday Coffee Addicted Writer from Coffee Addicted Writer poses a question which participants respond on their own blogs within the week (Friday through Thursday). They then share their links at the main site and visit other participants blogs.

Quote your favorite author. (submitted by Billy @ Coffee Addicted Writer)
I am terrible when it comes to remembering quotes, and I really do not have one favorite author. That makes it hard to answer a question like this.

Two of my all time favorite quotes are by authors I have never read before. I know that wasn't the question, but I will share them with you anyway:
"We don't see things as they are, we see things as we are." - Anais Nin
and also
"Fiction reveals truths that reality obscures" by Jessamyn West

A favorite quote from an author who I greatly admire and enjoy (although I have not read the book it is taken from) is
“Fairy tales are more than true: not because they tell us that dragons exist, but because they tell us that dragons can be beaten.” ― Neil Gaiman, Coraline

What about you? Are you good at remembering quotes by your favorite authors? What are some of your favorite quotes?

Thank you for helping me decide what book from my TBR collection I should read next:

My TBR List is a meme hosted by the awesome Michelle at Because Reading. It’s a fun way to choose a book from your TBR pile to read. The 1st Saturday of every month, I will list 3 books I am considering reading and take a poll as to which you think I should read. I will read the winner that month, and my review will follow (unfortunately, not likely in the same month, but eventually--that's all I can promise).

My reading has been so off course these past two months. I am hoping May will be better.  I went with a fairly random selection this month for you to choose from. I have read books by each of the authors before, and enjoyed them. I hope you will help me decide which one to read next!

A Curious Beginning (Veronica Speedwell #1) by Deanna Raybourn
London, 1887.

After burying her spinster aunt, orphaned Veronica Speedwell is free to resume her world travels in pursuit of scientific inquiry—and the occasional romantic dalliance. As familiar with hunting butterflies as with fending off admirers, Veronica intends to embark upon the journey of a lifetime.

But fate has other plans when Veronica thwarts her own attempted abduction with the help of an enigmatic German baron, who offers her sanctuary in the care of his friend Stoker, a reclusive and bad-tempered natural historian. But before the baron can reveal what he knows of the plot against her, he is found murdered—leaving Veronica and Stoker on the run from an elusive assailant as wary partners in search of the villainous truth.

Bayou Moon (The Edge #2) by Ilona Andrews (Penguin Berkley Ace, 2010)
The Edge lies between worlds, on the border between the Broken, where people shop at Walmart and magic is a fairytale–and the Weird, where blueblood aristocrats rule, changelings roam, and the strength of your magic can change your destiny…
Cerise Mar and her unruly clan are cash poor but land rich, claiming a large swathe of the Mire, the Edge swamplands between the state of Louisiana and the Weird. When her parents vanish, her clan’s long-time rivals are suspect number one.

But all is not as it seems. Two nations of the Weird are waging a cold war fought by feint and espionage, and their conflict is about to spill over into the Edge—and Cerise’s life . William, a changeling soldier who left behind the politics of the Weird, has been forced back into service to track down a rival nation’s spymaster.

When William’s and Cerise’s missions lead them to cross paths, sparks fly—but they’ll have to work together if they want to succeed…and survive. [Goodreads Summary]

The Forgotten (Krewe of Hunters #16) by Heather Graham
Murdered by a dead man?

A woman named Maria Gomez is murdered in Miami, apparently by her husband—who'd been presumed dead, slain by a crime boss. FBI agent Brett Cody can't believe it; dead or alive, the man had loved his wife. He also can't help feeling guilty, since he was responsible for protecting Miguel and Maria Gomez.

A few miles away, Lara Mayhew has just begun working at a dolphin research facility. She loves her new job—until a dolphin brings her something unexpected from the deep. A human hand. More body parts show up, and when Brett looks into the situation, he discovers that the dismembered corpse is Miguel's.

Soon, rumors of crazed zombies abound in the Miami media, and the Krewe of Hunters, an elite FBI unit of paranormal investigators, is called in. Brett and Lara find themselves working with the Krewe—and working closely together. An elderly crime boss who's losing his memory seems to be key to solving this case, but…there's no motive. Unless Brett and Lara can uncover one in the Miami underworld. And that means they have to protect themselves. And each other.

  1. The Easter Bunny knows y'all well. I've been ordering from our local indies, too, and may have to get that Star Wars cookbook for a friend.

I'm glad you were able to sleep well. A good night's sleep seems elusive these days, doesn't it?

    1. Kathy - Yes, we have a smart Easter Bunny. ;-) I hope your friend likes the cookbook if you get it for them. My daughter is anxious for my husband to make something from it, but he told her he wasn't sure there was anything in it she would eat. LOL She's so picky.

I so needed that night of good sleep. I hope it continues.

      Thank you for visiting.

  2. I loved the Choose Your Own Adventure books as a kid! I hope Mouse enjoys her new book! The Easter Bunny brings my daughter books too. I hope things get better and look up soon! Take Care :)

  4. I do wear a mask all day at work, and I don't feel like I'm still wearing it when I take it off but I can feel its mark. I have marks on my face for several hours after and I usually have a headache. Good times, but at least our hospital has PPE...

I voted on Bayou Moon. Loved it! :)

    1. Rachel - I imagine you are much more used to wearing a mask all day than I am. I only have to wear mine one day out of the week when I'm in the office for my 10 hour shift. I can imagine why you have a headache after going so long wearing it, and the marks to show for it. Yours is probably much heavier and sturdier given where you work. Our staff who go out into the community are required to wear N95 masks, but those of us who don't deal with the public in person are just using the simple cloth handmade ones or scarves, depending on what a person can scrap up. Stay safe out there!

  5. That Star Wars cookbook looks fun! And yay for Choose Your Own Adventure!!! Those are so fun...

I've read some Shannon Hale but not that one.

Congrats on the laptop! And love the kitty pictures. :)

I voted A Curious Beginning because I've been wanting to try that series! :) Hope you have a fabulous weekend and a safe and healthy week!

    1. Greg - Doesn't it? My husband loves stuff like that. :-) I'm not sure how much he'll actually use it, but he is enjoying reading through it. I love Choose Your Own Adventures too.

It's so nice to have a computer that isn't slow and does what I want it to when I want it too. LOL

Thank you for voting. I've been meaning to jump into that series for awhile now too. Thank you also for visiting!

  6. Those are all pretty great book quotes! And of your TBR pile choices, I've read them all-the first is an ongoing series with 2 more books contracted to be published at this time, and then the 5 that have been published, so easy to catch up. The second is part of a completed series, so can be read anytime. And the final, middle of an ongoing, who knows when it'll end series. They each have their pros and cons, but they're all great books, so I hope you enjoy whichever, and all of them, whenever you read them! Thanks for stopping by! Happy reading!

    1. Louisa - Thank you! The first quote is one I use in my e-mail signature. I've read the first of the Andrews's series and enjoyed it. Ilona Andrews can do no wrong in my book. I love their Kate Daniels' series. And I would love to read all their books eventually. I've read several of the Krewe Hunter books by Graham, but not in any particular order. I probably should go back and start the series from the beginning. Luckily, they stand pretty well on their own. I am glad to hear you liked all three of these options! Thank you for stopping by!

  9. Oh my gosh! Your cat is adorable!! :D Yes, the masks are not fun. I've avoided having to wear one by not going around anyone, except on occasion. I know though that things will start opening up more and I'll be wearing it more. We're huge Marvel fans and are planning on doing a marathon this month. I hope this week goes better for you!

    1. Tressa - Thank you! The cats are enjoying having us home more, I think. I am required to wear a mask when I go into the office and while I am there. And I wear one when I go out. We're required right now to wear them any time we go out in public. That may change when the Board of Supervisors vote on Tuesday, but it will be going against the Director of Public Health's directive. As much as I want this to be over, I trust the medical professional more than the politicians.

I hope you enjoy your Marvel marathon! We are enjoying ours. :-)

    1. Gayathri - That's how I feel too. Better safe than sorry. I know the masks I have won't protect me completely, but they give me a sense of security. Right now they are required here when out in public, but that may change this coming week when our county leaders vote. They'll be going against the county's Public Health Director though, which I question.

  12. The Easter Bunny didn't make it to my house...perhaps he is running late? I think I may need to help the bunny along this year and send some wonderful cheery books my way. I feel much better after simply seeing all the lovely arrivals at your home. The powerful Circe who does not give up though everyone is against her in the god-world? A Star Wars cookbook? A Choose Your Own Adventure? And with a unicorn? Yes, I think so.

I wish I had more animal companions. Actually I'd love to have more of any sort of companions. My poor husband has had to bear the weight of all my emotions currently. I may need to pull out my box of puppets and do some puppet therapy.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Deb - Maybe the Easter Bunny is just late. :-) I am looking forward to finally reading Circe. I really liked The Song of Achilles.

This isolation is hard on so many. I know my daughter feels it especially. She's such a social child. I worry about my mom who lives alone, but she's still finding ways to spend time with her friends--at a safe distance. They plan social distance walks and even have pizza on the patio together, each bringing their own food and sitting over six feet apart.

My cats will not miss all the unwanted affection I have been torturing them with when life returns to some semblance of normal. I'm still really struggling emotionally too. The anxiety and depression. There might be something to puppet therapy. You'll have to let me know if it helps.

And I've read The Great Alone, which is an unusual read that didn't where I expected and I have thought a great deal about since I finished it, and Circe - which I absolutely loved. I hope May is a good reading month for you. I voted for the Ilona Andrews, as I've loved the Innkeeper Chronicles series and the writing tone is quite chirpy with pleasing dollops of humour, which we all need these days... 17. I'm looking forward to Circe. I grabbed it on a 99p Kindle sale last summer, as well as The Song of Achilles on an Audible sale, but was saving them for this summer as we were supposed to be heading to Greece in August... Not happening now, obviously, but will probably still read/listen to them as planned. :)

I've been re-watching Marvel movies lately too. We're planning on Infinity War & End Game over the next couple of days and I'm excited. I love them both.
I was rewatching Vampire Diaries too and got to the end of S5 before taking a break. It was one season more than I watched when it was on TV... Still want to watch the remaining 3 seasons and see how it ends though. It's nice to watch them when they're over sometimes. Avoiding the hype and constant commentary just lets you enjoy them with no pre-prejudice. The Originals has also been on my watchlist for way too long... I never watched a single episode of that when it was on. I always love Klaus though... And Caroline. I wanted them to be end game. *sigh*

Sorry you had a rough week. :(

I love both of those Avengers movies too. I've only seen End Game once (in the theater) and am looking forward to seeing it again soon.

I am not sure what I think about those last two seasons of Vampire Diaries. The show went in such a different direction. But I really liked that ending. I had seen the first episode of The Originals when it first aired, but that was it. I really liked Klaus and Caroline together too. They had good chemistry.

I voted for the Ilona Andrews book, because I love their Kate Daniels and Hidden Legacy series! I still need to start this one, and I will! :)

    1. Lindsi - I am glad to hear you enjoyed Circe. I've been wanting to read it since I first heard about it. Yes, the cats are definitely enjoying the extra company. :-) Thank you for voting! I love Kate Daniels too. And the Innkeeper Chronicles. I haven't tried the Hidden Legacy series yet, but I plan to. Thank you for stopping by!

  31. There’s a cookbook for everything these days, I saw one the other day for the Gilmore Girls.
May will be quite busy for us usually, my oldest son turns 16, my oldest daughter turns 24 and Mothers Day is this weekend but celebration will be subdued this year.

I’m sorry you had a rough week, I hope this one is better.

  32. What a lovely book haul, Wendy! I really miss visiting the bookstores and the libraries but I'm glad there's online bookstores. I hope you enjoy reading Circe as much as I do. I loved that book!

And I'll vote for "A Curious Beginning". Hope you've a great week, Wendy!

    1. Melody - Thank you! Fortunately our local indie store has a website and the owner and her son are filling orders from home and having them mailed directly to the customer. It's not quite the same as going into the store, but at least they are still have to make money and stay in business. I will be glad when the library opens up again too! I hope I enjoy Circe too. I think I will. :-) Thank you for voting and for stopping by!

  33. Oh I'm sorry to hear last week was difficult but thank goodness for a good night's sleep right? Love the pictures of your co-workers from home :)
You have a great Easter bunny stopping by your house. I mean, look at those books! I am patiently waiting for a book order I place with an indie bookshop. Love supporting our indie bookstores!

  34. I love that the Easter Bunny delivers books! If Mouse likes Choose Your Adventure books have you tried the Case Closed series by Laura Magaziner? The Tornado and I had the best time with the first one and he's really looking forward to starting the 2nd one soon. I typically don't like the Choose Your Own type books but I thought this was fun. I'm sorry your week was rough. Your coworkers in the pictures are pretty cute though! I can see how Big Little Lies would be very mood dependent. There's a lot going on and a lot of it is petty. Hope you have a great week!

  37. Love all your pictures, Wendy. Glad you guys got some new books and I would imagine that wearing a mask all day would get so old. I get tired of it for just the time I'm at the grocery store. I never knew I'd dislike what feels like damp cloth across my face quite so much. Ha!

Here's a quote to make you laugh - I love it!

It's been a TERRIBLE, HORRIBLE, NO GOOD, VERY BAD DAY. My mom says some days are like that. Even in Australia.

  39. Easter just wasn't the same here--I watched a service on my phone. The Easter bunny arrived for my husband in the form of a huge jar of cashews and for my daughter her favorite candy. I just gave The Great Alone to a friend who desperately needed books (I gave her my new, unread copy) and I read Best Friends when it was first published. It wasn't my favorite graphic novel. I hope your May is going well!
