Sunday Post: Reading in the Car, School Troubles, & My February TBR List Book

The Sunday Post is hosted by the wonderful Kimba, the Caffeinated Book Reviewer, and gives us all a chance to recap our week, talk about what we are reading, share any new books that have come our way, and whatever else we want to talk about.

I wish I could share our beautiful weather with you. You would think spring is here, the temperatures in the 80's. The meteorologists are saying rain is coming later in the week--I wouldn't mind. The park was full of children yesterday after Mouse's soccer class. We had a nice day. We have no big plans for today. My husband is talking of making lemonade. Mouse wants to make cookies. And there may be a movie--but don't hold us to it.

Tomorrow is the start of Book Blogger Appreciation Week (BBAW), which has been renewed by the ladies over at The Estrella Society (AnaAndiHeather, and Jenny). I plan to take part in a few of the activities. I hope you will too! It's not too late to sign up.

Are you able to read in the car? (submitted by Elizabeth
I did not realize how lucky I was to be able to read in the car until the conversation came up among other readers. It's an especially good thing on those long drives. Or when my husband is maneuvering in Los Angeles traffic, and I just can't bare to watch the road. I do not read in the car as often anymore, having my daughter with me to talk to and keep entertained. When I am alone, however, and I am not in the mood for music or news, you might find me listening to an audiobook.

What I Am Reading: I am in the middle of Tessa Arlen's Death Sits Down to Dinner at the moment, the second in her Lady Montfort series set in Edwardian England.

What I Am Watching: I am looking forward to the return of The Walking Dead tonight--although I likely won't watch it until next Friday.

Around the Blogosphere:

What's Going On Off the Blog: Work reached that crazy busy mode I am not a big fan of this past week. Steady busy is much more manageable. But I survived, and I am grateful for the long weekend. Mouse had a rough week too, unfortunately. A rough last few weeks, actually. Much of what she's covering in preschool is stuff she already knows, and so she's been refusing to do her work. Or at least putting up a big fight when it comes time to do it. I am trying to work with the teachers to make it more challenging for her so she won't be so bored in addition to working with her on not giving her teachers such a hard time. Unfortunately the whole practice makes perfect line doesn't really work at Mouse's age. There's also been some problems with a boy in the school. The situation has escalated in the last week, and both my husband and I are very unhappy (to put it mildly). I was about ready to pull my daughter out on Friday, but we've agreed to give the school another chance to resolve it.

This Past Week In Reading Mews:

Upcoming on the Blog:
Monday - Day 1 of BBAW: Books That Define Me
Tuesday - Bookish Thoughts: My Sweet Vidalia by Deborah Mantella
Wednesday - Day 3 of BBAW (To Be Announced)
Thursday - Bookish Thoughts: The Girl in the Red Coat by Kate Hamer
Friday - Day 5 of BBAW (To Be Announced)

Thank you for helping me choose my next read from my TBR collection:

My TBR List is a meme hosted by the awesome Michelle at Because Reading. It’s a fun way to choose a book from your TBR pile to read. The 1st Sunday of every month, I will list 3 books I am considering reading and take a poll as to which you think I should read. I will read the winner that month, and my review will follow. While I will attempt to post my review that same month, I make no promises--it may go up the following month.

Which book from my TBR stack should I read this month?

Lost Under a Ladder by Linda O. Johnston932.1%
Delia's Shadow by Jaime Lee Moyer1346.4%
Searching for Someday by Jennifer Probst621.4%

The winner is Delia's Shadow by Jaime Lee Moyer!

Thank you again to all who voted! I am looking forward to beginning Delia's Shadow soon. San Francisco is one of my favorite cities, and I'm eager to read it. For those who voted for the other two books, I plan to read those as well, just not likely this month. They all sound good to me which is how they ended up on my TBR pile.

I hope everyone has a wonderful week. Happy Reading!

  1. I'm so sorry to hear about Mouse's problems at school. I remember struggling with the some of the repetitive worksheets my girls spent hours on, and my frustration with requiring so much time on things they had already mastered. Homework outgrew itself when the ability to send home tons of worksheets became possible. One of those great ideas that has had as many adverse results as positive ones. Hope the situation with the other child is soon resolved.

    1. Jenclair - Thanks. I know we're in for those worksheets starting this fall when she starts kindergarten. It's so different than when I was in school.

    1. Shaina - It seems like a lot of people can't read in the car. :-( We ended up watching the movie, but not making cookies or lemonade. Oh well. It was a good day overall. :-)

  5. Sorry to hear that Mouse is having some school difficulties- never fun! At least she is ahead though, right? :) I'm looking forward to hearing your thoughts on Delia's Shadow as I've got that one sitting on my kindle as well. We had a really long week as well as my youngest was sick ALL week long. He is just now finally back to his usual self and I am so very grateful. Kids :) I hope you have a really great week!! And YAY for The Walking Dead!! Finally!

    1. Samantha - Thanks. Yes, it is good she is ahead. :-) I just wish she wasn't giving the teacher such a hard time. I'm excited to read Delia's Shadow.

I am sorry to hear your youngest is sick. Mine is now too, unfortunately. She's running a fever tonight. I'm glad she and I have the day off tomorrow. I hope you have a great week too!

  7. So sorry about the issues at Miss Mouse's school. Tiresome. Hope things will resolve soon. It sounds like she is definitely ready for kindergarten, whether Mom is or not. LOL

I'm participating in BBAW as well. Decided I would and it makes a nice change. See you around there. And thanks for sharing the interesting posts from other blogs.

I don't know how much blog hopping I will get tomorrow since I'll be home with Mouse. A lot will depend on how she's feeling. I'm looking forward to BBAW otherwise though. :-)

  8. It's great that you can read in the car. I can, too, but, as you know from visiting my post, I can't read fiction unless we happen to be on a long road trip.

For shorter car trips, you might try audiobooks. I think they are better for concentration, although you do have to be careful if you're the one driving.

Of course, having a cute little tyke in the car, you do have to talk to her. She sounds SO adorable! And the nickname "Mouse" is so cute, too! it's really too bad that she's going through a rough time in school. And it's really nice of you and your husband to give the school another chance. I hope they resolve the problem very soon, though!

So the book that was picked was "Delea's Shadow"! YAY!! I voted for that one! I really liked that cover, and the plot is awesome!

Thank you for visiting and commenting on my own BBH post. Enjoy your Valentine's Day, and Happy Reading everywhere!! :)

    1. Marie - Thank you! I think she's pretty adorable too. Except maybe when she's throwing a tantrum. :-) Hopefully the school situation will be resolved. I'm not one to overreact, and the fact that I feel so strongly about this particular situation says a lot. I really do think it's something that is fixable.

I have a hard time with audiobooks for my short drive to work. It feels like the book barely gets going when I'm at the office. I do much better listening when I'm running multiple errands or driving longer distances.

Thank you for voting! I am looking forward to reading Delia's Shadow. It sure does sound good, doesn't it?

I hope you have a great week!

  10. Sounds like you're having some great weather! Here it's been a bit chilly, rainy and windy, but we also had a sunny day last week.
I can't read in the car unfortunately, I get nauseous. I can read in trains though. I am sorry to hear Mouse had a rough couple of weeks, it's unhandy when school isn't challenging enough. Have a great week!

    1. Lola - It's been beautiful. I am looking forward to rain later this week--so I really do hope it comes. I'm the kind of person who would be happiest living in a wetter environment than I do now.

I remember reading on the train when I would go and visit my husband-then-boyfriend during the summer breaks from school.

Hopefully this week will be better for Mouse at school. She's running a fever right now, so it might be an extra short week if she doesn't get better between now and Tuesday. I hope you have a great week too!

    1. Nise' - Haha! I record it on my DVR, but I feel the same way once I turn it on. I sometimes forget to stay off of Twitter around the time it airs live on Sunday nights. It's not the kind of show I can watch with my daughter around, and so I save it for when I'm alone.

I wish I could send you some of the weather we've been having. I wouldn't mind it being a little cooler given the time of year! And thanks. I hope it's a better week for Mouse too.

  12. Sorry to hear about the issues at school, I hope they resolve it quickly and properly. That can be a tough thing it's too bad when other kids can't act right!

Hope you guys had a good weekend. Lemonade and cookies sounds good. :) I'm ready for the TWD to be back as well... and I hope Tessa arlen's new book is good, I'm looking forward to that one!

    1. Greg - Thank you. I've been very patient with the school up until now, and it's unfortunate things have gotten as far as they have. My daughter is by no means perfect, and I understand kids will be kids. This boy is exhibiting very concerning behaviors, however. He's not a bad kid. This just needs to be nipped in the bud.

We never did make the lemonade or the cookies, although we did watch a movie. :-) And the lemons are ready. So far I am enjoying Tessa Arlen's book.

  13. Oh, I'm sorry Mouse is having a tough time at school. Being bored is hard for kids that age, and as for the situation with another child, I hope the school gets it resolved quickly. I also hope things calm down for you at work.

I can't read in the car without getting headachy and queasy, but audiobooks are another matter, and thank heaven for them!

    1. Lark - Yes, she doesn't do well with boredom. I wish telling her to read a book was enough to solve the problem. Haha And thank you. I hope for the same with the school. I know Mouse's teacher is very upset about everything that's happened as well.

Audiobooks do come in handy! I hope you have a great week!

  14. I commute an hour each way to and from work every day, so I think I'd go crazy if I couldn't read! Sadly, my parents actually ended up pulling me from our local public school and sending me to a private school, on the recommendation of the school principle, because I was so unchallenged and bored that I was becoming disruptive. The teacher's initial suggestion was that I help teach the other children in the class since I'd finished all the work already, which definitely isn't a young child's responsibility! I hope things work out for your family - school can be tough, since all kids are supposed to fit into a common mould, which of course is never the case.

    1. Jane - I would need to be able to read with an hour long commute too!

I'm sorry you had to go through that as a child. I'm just happy most days she's willing to do the work even if it has to be after being told she won't get to play outside until her work is done. There have been a few days she's had to bring her worksheets home to do since she didn't finish them at school. She seems to like doing that better. I thought about my daughter maybe playing helper, but more in the capacity of passing out the assignments or pencils. Something simple that might make her feel more inclined to cooperate. I can't see her teaching or even helping others with their work. She's not near old enough for something like that.

I can see why parents turn to homeschooling given that common mold kids are expected to fit into.

Thank you for visiting! Have a great week!

  15. I hope the school issues will be resolved quickly, Wendy.

I'm never good at reading in a moving vehicle. I'm fine with trains as long as they aren't the jerky types, lol. I think planes are the best. :-)

BBAW is always fun but this year I'll have to give it a miss, though I always enjoy reading posts by fellow bookbloggers' and getting to know more about them. I'm looking forward to reading yours and hope you've a great weekend!

    1. Melody - Thank you!

I love reading on the plane--or at the airport even. :-)

BBAW kind of snuck up on me this year. I almost decided against participating, but then figured I could work in maybe two or three posts. We'll see what time allows. I hope you have a great weekend too!

  16. Thanks for the reminder of BBAW! I must check it out this year.
Sorry about Mouse's bad week in school. My kids had some bullying issues in younger grades and it wasn't good, because I unwittingly became a Mama Bear with the school. Not proud of it, but I did get things done.

Have a better week at work yourself and enjoy reading.

    1. Brandee - I've only been reading to audiobooks for the past five years. I do enjoy it most of the time, but it took me a while to figure out which books work best for me. Unfortunately, I don't get a lot of alone time in the car, so it takes me forever to get through an audiobook.

I met with the school staff on Tuesday evening and it sounds like they are taking measures to ensure something like that doesn't happen again.
