TGIF: Mail Call & Friday Fill Ins (June 12, 2009)

*Click on the image above to get to the Friday Fill-In headquarters, hosted by Janet!*

1. I grew up thinking that my parents chose my name by drawing it out of a hat full of slips of paper with names beginning with "W". I would come to learn, however, that, while my parents did purposefully seek out a "W" name, they were quick to settle on "Wendy" from Peter Pan. No hat involved.

2. Stop, You're Killing Me! was the last website I visited before coming here.

3. Why don't you kick off your shoes and stay awhile, and maybe leave a comment? I'd love to hear from you!

4. Reading a book right before falling asleep for the night helps me relax.

5. Thanks for the well wishes! I haven't been very good about staying off my ankle what with the sofa and love seat shopping and all. Those furniture warehouses are huge! I will do better this weekend. Promise.

6. Arrogance and rudeness are very off-putting.

7. And as for the weekend, tonight I'm looking forward to trying out my new sofa (if it's actually delivered same day like they promise) and finishing off season 2 of Torchwood, tomorrow my plans include cozying up with a book (and staying off my foot) and Sunday, I want to avoid thinking about having to go back to work on Monday!

Here's a look inside my mailbox on this Mailbox Monday on this Friday (brought to you by Marcia at The Printed Page ):

Dragon House by John Shors
The Help by Kathryn Stockett

  1. I spend Sunday's trying to avoid thinking about Monday too :)

  2. Ooooh! The Help! Read that one next! You're going to love it.

  3. You should do much better staying off your foot with your new couch and your doggie snuggled up to you.

I agree with arrogance and rudeness unfortunately my boss has both:(

Have a great weekend and my FFI is here.

  4. I fall asleep reading to - so relaxing!

Enjoy the weekend - just don't think about Monday.

  5. Stop! You're Killing me! is a great website. I love it.

Hope you have a great weekend!

  6. The Help - oh lucky girl. Everyone has been raving about that one! :)

  7. Have I ever mentioned how much I appreciate your doing your memes on the same day in one post?

    Thank you!

  8. Ooh, a new sofa! I hope we'll be in the market for one of those before too long :-). The one we have is eleven years old and getting kind of squishy. Enjoy relaxing and reading on yours!

My answer to #6 was similar to yours.

I have the day off today and am not sure what I'm doing with it. Enjoy your weekend, Wendy - and take care of that ankle!

  9. I spend my days at work trying not to think about work. ;)

    SYKM is a great website.

  10. New furniture how fun! I hope you had a great week off and your ankle feels better. I am planning to get The Help also, it looks fabulous.

  11. I'm with you on #4...I have to read or else...I don't fall asleep quickly!

  12. Hi, I am glad I found your blog, I love getting ideas for more books to add to my TBR pile and bookcase.
Last night I started reading The Boleyn Inheritance by Philippa Gregory. It kept me up a bit late, and is about Henry the VIIIs court and his wives. It is fiction and I suggest you read The Other Boleyn Girl first.
    Happy reading and reviewing.

  13. I missed the post about your foot/ankle injury. Hope everything is okay and that it heals soon.

I love new furniture... snuggling up on the couch with a good book. Perfect in this kind of weather.

  14. I got Dragon House from John Shors for review, too. I'm looking forward to reading it. My husband had a nice chat with him when we were at BEA (I missed him, I was attending the blogger panel).

  15. I love how your parents got your name. I don't know how my parents got mine, but I'm happy with it and the spelling. Enjoy the couch and I hope the ankle is better. The Help is in my TBR. I've heard great things about it.

  16. I love the story about your name too :) Couldn't agree more with #6, and enjoy your new sofa :D

  17. Wendy....I am so sorry about your ankle. I guess as I was sick, I didn't know about this. I finally as of yesterday am not dizzy. Can you believe this? I hope your foot gets better soon.
I love that you were named after Wendy in Peter Pan.
    Enjoy your new sofa. Ahhhhhh

  18. You've a lovely haul there, Wendy!
    I hope you've a great weekend! :)

  19. I did think that my parents got my truck from a bread truck. I do the reading in bed thing too but I'm leery about library books lately since one time I found a booger. Hope your ankle's feeling better and that your sofa arrived.

  20. Sally - LOL My husband always gets a little testy if I bring up work before 9 p.m. on Sundays. :-)

Sandy - I couldn't resist buying a copy when I saw my bookclub has it for less than $10.

Kathy - I can't wait to read your thoughts on it!

Caspette - Having the new couch and the animals with me certainly did help. My ankle's already feeling better than it was.

That's too bad about your boss. I know people like that at work too.

Margaret - It really is relaxing to read before bed. It helps clear my mind and makes it all that much easier to sleep.

Yvonne - It's one of my favorite go to websites when I am trying to find out the order of a crime fiction series.

Iliana - It's because of all those raves I couldn't resist it anymore.

Lisa - It makes things easier for me too. :-)

Florinda - I was planning to wait until after we moved into our new place before replacing our old hand-me-down's but that wasn't meant to be.

I'm still kind of afraid to sit on them and mess them up. LOL

I hope you enjoyed your long weekend!

Carrie K (Patience) - Haha! I know the feeling!

  21. Jaimie - Other than the put-together-yourself bookcases and desks, this is the real big furniture we've bought ourselves in our nearly 12 years together.

I've been better about staying off my ankle this weekend. I'm learning. :-)

Janet - I always sleep better when I've read a little first. It helps clear my mind.

Terra - Thank you for stopping by! There's never a shortage of book ideas here. :-)

I read The Other Boleyn Girl a few years ago, but haven't gotten to any of Gregory's other books. Someday perhaps. :-)

Ti - Thank you for the well wishes. I'm still struggling on it, but it's getting better.

It's such a lovely set. Much bigger in my house though than it was on the store floor. LOL We're still getting used to it.

Carey - It sounds like it will be a good one, doesn't it? I can't wait to read it.

Kristy - I don't know why they teased me so much about the pulling my name out of a hat thing. It's much more interesting knowing the real reason. :-)

Nymeth - Thank you! The sofa is very comfy.

Donna - Thanks, Donna. A sprained ankle is nothing compared to what you've been going through. I am glad you haven't been dizzy the last couple of days. I hope it lasts. I want you to be all better!

Melody - Thanks, Melody. I hope you have a good weekend too.

Barbara - I don't really use the library at all and so I haven't had that problem arise. But, I guess it could be a problem with a used book as well. Not pleasant at all, that's for sure!

  22. I'm with you on this: Arrogance and rudeness are very off-putting. And the know-it-alls as well.

  23. I received Gifts of War, too. I'm looking forward to your thoughts. Happy reading!

    Diary of an Eccentric

  24. Alice - I don't care for either characteristic in people. :-(

Anna - It looks like it will be a good one, doesn't it?
