Beyond the Books: My Bad Habits (That I Refuse to Give Up)

Every Thursday Karen of KissinBlueKaren hosts Beyond the Books, at which time participants are given a topic and asked to write about it on their own blogs. They then share their links at the main site and visit other participants blogs.

Today Karen's Beyond the Books topic is about bad habits. Share yours and why you won't give it up. Ever.

1. I read too much. I know one or two of you are thinking this cannot possibly be a bad habit--but when it interferes with chores, sleep, encroaches on family time (ever hide in the bathroom to finish the last chapter of a book without interruption? I have.), or been late coming back from lunch because I can't stop reading in the middle of a paragraph (at least not if it's a tense scene), it can be a problem.

2. I watch more television than I should. I get cranky when I fall too behind on my television shows (The Walking Dead in particular), and there are times when I forgo the household chores to play catch up.

3. I talk to myself. I have tried to refrain, but it is difficult. I do not even like the sound of my own voice, so it makes no sense I would do this. But often, in my car, for example, I find myself practicing conversations or composing blog posts out loud.

4. I randomly burst out in song. At home. In the office.  At the store. I do not necessarily have to be alone either. I just can't help myself. I am not that great of a singer either, so maybe I should feel bad about this habit of mine. But I don't. Now my daughter does it too. Oops.

5. I am obsessed with chocolate. Dark chocolate, especially, but milk chocolate will do. At least it is somewhat healthy. Maybe just not in the quantities I sometimes eat it.

6. Although it doesn't happen all the time, it happens often enough that I guess the whodunit or motive or what have you in movies I watch and the books I read long before the end. I do not purposely try to figure these things out--it's just the way my brain works. It drives my husband crazy--at least where movies are concerned.

7. I daydream. A lot. My husband thinks this is a bad habit, but I am not sure it is.

What are some of your bad habits you do not want to give up? Do we have any in common?

  1. Oh! I can relate. I talk to myself as well and I also burst out in song often. It's funny because I don't even think about it until one of my kids is like "Mom, stop singing!" I sing when I am happy, and to lighten up the mood, and to make them laugh. I just make up stuff and sing it. Great list!

    1. Karen - My daughter is still young enough she thinks it is funny and will join in. :-) I know there will be a day when she tells me to stop singing too. LOL I like to make up songs too.

  2. Wow, I'm wondering if we are twins - I do all of these on a regular basis!

  3. I'm afraid to post my bad habits, because of what people might think LOL - I mean, I'm not a shop lighter or druggie but I still have plenty of negatives I'm not too proud of:)

    1. Diane - I tried to stick to the ones that wouldn't embarrass me too much. ;-) And most of those I actually want to change . . .

  4. Great list! I don't break int song but I do have a tendency to recite movie lines every once in a while, and people will be like "what?" And I've been known to be late from lunch once or twice due to bookish reasons. :)

    1. Greg - Thanks! Sometimes a book just doesn't run on our work schedules, do they? I'm terrible at remembering quotes and movie lines. I think that'd be a cool habit to have. :-)

  5. Daydreaming is *not* a bad habit, nor is hiding somewhere to read a book (I do that too !). I also talk to myself a lot, or to an inanimate object (computer, for example), so you're not alone ;)

    1. Red Iza - I don't think daydreaming is either--thank you for taking my side. :-) Sometimes hiding to read is the only way to avoid interruptions. I talk to my computer too sometimes.

  6. Ooh chocolate! One of the (bad?) habits that I thought I'd never give up and yet here I am not having eaten any since mid-May.

I do however still talk to myself - what is that old joke about it being the only way you'll get a sensible reply?

    1. Tracy - I need to cut back on sugar badly, but I don't think I could completely give up chocolate.

I love the joke. Haha That is so true on top of being funny. :-)

  7. Oh I can definitely relate to most of these! I'm glad I'm not the only one whose hidden in the bathroom to finish a book! And yes to the talking to myself. Seriously - all the time! I'm trying to cut down on my sweets so I couldn't put my massive sweet tooth on my list but maybe I should've because I don't intend to get rid of them completely. Life without the occasional bit of chocolate or cupcake just isn't worth it! Great list and so fun!

    1. Katherine - I need to cut back on sweets too. I keep telling myself I will, but I haven't been motivated to actually do it. It's hard with leftover Halloween candy around. I'm glad I'm not the only one who talks to myself and hides in the bathroom to finish a book. :-)

  8. I dance when music makes me feel good even if I'm in public.

  9. I do a couple of these and I don't consider them bad habits. So we are both good lol!! I also read too much, watch too TV, love chocolate and talk to myself. These are good things (I guess the talking to ourselves makes us look crazy lol).

  10. #1,2,and 5 for sure. With chocolate is has been so hard with Halloween because there is so much around!! It is a good and a bad thing! Playing catch up with TV is so hard. I have dropped a couple shows this year already because I am too behind.

    1. Gracie - It's impossible to avoid chocolate in my house right now. I really need to take the leftover candy to work just to get it out of the house. I find it hard to keep up with TV too. I figure I can binge on the shows I don't have time for in the future. Maybe the far future. But someday maybe.

  11. Great list! I wish I read too much! Unfortunately, I usually put it off until the end of the day! I totally am guilty of talking to myself and have been known to bust out in song from time to time! :)

    1. Lola - It never feels like I read enough in reality, but I sneak it in when I can, even if it's an inopportune moment. ;-)

Since we can't live in an actual musical, we have to make it one ourselves, I say!

  12. LOL! The only one of these I don't share is #2. I don't watch a lot of TV, because for me, it's often energy-draining, while reading recharges me. (I have no idea why.) But other than that, yes, all of these. (And thank goodness I'm not the only person who talks to herself!)

    1. Lark - It's best if you don't watch a lot of television, I imagine. Yay for all of us who talk to ourselves. :-)

  13. I'm with you on all of these except the chocolate! I can't watch television without having something to do with my hands, but I can get out an embroidery project and go on a marathon of watching. Actually, Netflix or Amazon programs where I can watch more than one season and not have to wait!

    1. Jenclair - I have to be doing something with my hands when I watch television too. I don't do crafts or sewing projects though, so it kind of limits me to unproductive activities. I did take up coloring though, so that's been a bit better. I really like Netflix and Amazon too.

  14. I'm a daydreamer, too. I'm not sure it's a habit a person can even break. Just wish I could figure out a job we daydreamers could have that would take advantage of it!

    1. Lisa - Another daydreamer! I don't imagine I could break the habit if I tried. Maybe it's more of a personality trait. I would love a job where we could put our daydreaming to better use.

  15. Ohh yes to SO many of these! I am absolutely guilty of #1- which is why I am always tired. Also #3, and the whole thing (I hate the sound of my voice too!), and #7 is basically my LIFE. I love to daydream, I don't even know what would happen in my head if I didn't! Great list :)

    1. Jackie - They probably do fall more into the response category one might give if asked your faults and you'd rather not paint yourself in a very bad light. Haha!

  17. Yes to all your list except the singing part. I'm such a bad singer; have no interest anyway but my eldest loves singing. Her choir teacher said she has a good voice and I know she definitely doesn't inherit those genes from me, that's for sure. Lol.

    1. Melody - I am not the best singer (neither is my daughter), but I don't care. I can't help myself. :-)

  18. All of your bad habits are also mine, although my talking to myself is often talking to my dogs and cat. It has gotten much worse since I adopted the chatty Siamese, as I feel I must politely acknowledge his every 'meow'. The chocolate I have cut back on (somewhat), but if I haven't had any in a week, it becomes a pretty much unbearable craving.
The only bad habit I can think of right now that I should probably stop is obsessive social media checking. I usually turn off the Wifi on my Kindle fire so I can't browse that while I'm supposed to be reading.

    1. Litha Nelle - I do a lot of talking to my cats, I admit. Does that still count as talking to ourselves? LOL One of my cats is quite chatty, which I'm sure she picked up from me. I reward her too often for speaking up.

I can be obsessive about social media checking too. :-( I take my phone with me wherever I go.

  19. We share some of the same bad habits - I'm also a chocoholic! :)

I think one of my bad habits would be worrying too much. My husband thinks it's my hobby - haha...

I tend to worry too much too. :-(
