It's Monday! What I am Reading & An Awfully Full Mailbox

Hosted by Sheila of One Persons Journey Through a World of Books
Weekly meme where we discuss the books you've read
and those you plan to read in the coming week.

My reading year has gotten off to a great start. Although, choosing which book to read next has been a bit of a challenge lately. My mind changes on a dime. One minute I am trying to decide between two books in particular and then in the next, I have moved on to two other options, setting the first two aside for later. On the plus side, I am reading--and happily so.

After finishing James LePore's suspense novel, Blood of My Brother, late last week, I decided I needed something of a more lighter fare. And so I am currently enjoying Dogs Don't Lie by Clea Simon. It's the first in a new series due to come out this spring. The series features Pru Marlowe, an animal behaviorist who also happens to be an animal psychic, however reluctantly.

Next on my list to read is Daniel Woodrell's Winter's Bone, which I recently bought for my nook. I rented the movie from netflix recently, remembered it was based on a book and now suddenly want to read the book first. As a result, it's been bumped up on my immediate TBR pile.

What are you reading at the moment?

Mailbox Monday is hosted by Rose City Readers (January Host)
We share what books that we found
in our mailboxes last week.

If you caught my post yesterday, then you know how I spent my day. So, why would I even think of adding to my TBR collection right now, you ask? I have no good answer. I'm a glutton for punishment, what can I say? I could blame it on the gift cards I received for Christmas, I suppose. (All books mentioned below, e-books and paper books, are ones I purchased on my own, with a gift card or cash.)

Books that arrived in the mail:
  • Black Mamba Boy by Nadifa Mohamed
  • A Clockwork Orange by Anthony Burgess
  • The Girl Who Fell From the Sky by Heidi W. Durrow
Plus, what a great time to stock up on some books for my nook! All of these were recommendations I picked up from other bloggers. I wish I'd kept track of exactly who recommended them. Something to work on in the future!

This is what appeared in my e-mailbox over the past two weeks:
  • When the Emperor Was Divine by Julie Otsuka
  • How to be an American Housewife by Margaret Dilloway
  • The Knife of Never Letting Go by Patrick Ness
  • By Fire, By Water by Mitchell Kaplan
  • Baking Cakes in Kigali by Gaile Parkin
  • The Lonely Polygamist by Brady Udall
  • Winter Bone by Daniel Woodrell ~ After seeing mention of the movie and the book on Nicole at Linus's Blanket, I made note of the movie and decided I had to see it. But first, I want to read the book.
  • A Study in Scarlet by Arthur Conan Doyle ~ Having just seen the BBC television show of a modernized Sherlock Holmes and then coming across Kelly of The Written World's review, I couldn't resist.
What books have received in the mail recently?

  1. Wow, amazing books, there is nothing like a full mailbox no matter how bad it makes you feel about your TBR pile later. I hope you enjoy each and every one of the books.

  2. You picked some that are on my TBRs. I've got How to be an American Housewife, The Knife of Never Letting Go and Baking Cakes in Kigali. A Study in Scarlet is one of the few Sherlock Holmes books I've read -- we have all of them in a collection I bought for my son, who loves 19th-century writing. And, The Girl Who Fell From the Sky is on my wish list. Fun stuff! Have a great time reading!!!

  6. I did wonder about Winter's Bone. I've got the movie on my Q on Netflix, but I hate to spoil something if the book is good. So let us know! And oh, I really want to read the Lonely Polygamist. I meant to buy it before the TBR Dare, but I forgot. Now I have to wait!

  7. Loved the movie 'Winter's Bone" and am curious to hear how the book compares. Harsh reading, though. I just got "The Memory of Love" by Aminatta Forna, another downer - but good. Might need to take a cozy break, however. Actually picked up "The Lute Player" by Norah Lofts (an oldie but goodie historical about Richard III) so may be time to dive into that.

Hope Dogs Don't Lie hits the spot for you!

  8. The Margaret Dilloway book was really good. I hope you'll enjoy it. I'm curious to see what she's working on now. And, you've reminded me that I must check out the Patrick Ness books - it's a series right?

    Enjoy the books!

  9. I can't wait to read what you think of Winter's Bone. I didn't realize it was a book until after I watched the movie, so I'll have to wait a couple years to read it. If I remember it's a book. lol!

My co-worker and I were talking about Winter's Bone and we feel that many will think that it's not very real and it's made more dramatic by Hollywood. However, for those of us in Missouri who know what Southern MO is like, we know it's very truthful.

  15. Violet - LOL Very true! Books do make a day brighter. :-)

Nancy - I'm looking forward to reading each of them. They all came highly recommended by other bloggers so I figure it's a good sign. :-)

    Gautami - I think so too! :-)

Anna - I've heard such great things about it. I can't wait to dive in.

Teacher/Learner - I'll have plenty to keep me busy for awhile, that's for sure!

Sandy - My review of the book and movie will go up later this week. The book is definitely worth reading.

Clea - I agree, Winter Bone was on the harsh side. So good though. I meant to pick up something light after finishing that one, but I ended up going with another dark one. Just a different kind of dark.
