Book to Movie Challenge

Callista over at SMS Book Reviews is hosting the Book to Movie Challenge in which participants are asked to read three books that have been translated into movies. The challenge runs from September 1st to December 1st. I will be picking books I have yet to read (and movies I have not yet seen). If I can time it right, I'll try and watch the movies soon after I read the books.

My Book to Movie Challenge List:

Persuasion by Jane Austen [read]
The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde[read]
Bridge to Terabithia by Katherine Paterson [read]

*For those of you are thinking, "I can't believe she's joining another one," all of these books are already on my calendar to read in the next few months.

And just because: those of you who enjoyed The Kite Runner should check out the movie trailer. I have already warned my husband that I am going with or without him. This weekend we hope to see Bourne Ultimatum and Stardust. I wish it were Saturday so I could go today! Oh, why couldn't my husband take the day off? Hrmphf.

  1. You lucky thing - about to read Persuasion! I'm already looking forward to reading that review. I've jut signed up for this one as well - having pre-existing plans to read a book is a wonderful excuse for including it in a challenge, isn't it?

  2. I'm tempted to try some of the challenges, but I fear that the moment I try to pin down some sort of order to what I plan to read beyond the next 4 or 5 books, all my carefully-laid plans will crumble to naught. ;)

  3. I haven't even read Stardust and The Kite Runner yet and they are already being made into movies.
I have the Kite Runner requested from the library but I'd better get a move on!

  4. Coversgirl - It feels kind of like cheating, but Callista did say it was okay. :-) I'm looking forward to reading Persuasion very much. I noticed you are planning to read Mansfield Park for this challenge as well. Got to fit in Jane Austen somewhere!

Heather - I have discovered I read well with a set list (of my choosing). It kind of takes the "what to read next" dilemma out of my hands. LOL I only select books for the challenges that I really do want to read, which makes it pretty easy to stick to the plan.

Amy - You have until November to read The Kite Runner, so there is a little time. :-)

  5. I love the BBC Films version of Persuasion starring Amanda Root and Ciaran Hinds. I like all your choices for this challenge!

  6. I'm really looking forward to reading Bridge to Terabithia, the film was beautiful and touching. I need to read some more Jane Austin as well and the film of Notes on a Scandal was great (I called my mum today and she was watching it randomly). My best friend read it and loved it so I am sure you will too.

  7. I must live in a bubble. I had no idea that they were making The Kite Runner into a movie!!

  8. Gentle Reader - I am not sure which version of the movie I will watch, but in my experience, the BBC versions of Jane Austen's books tend to be the best. :-)

Rhinoa - I admit that I really wasn't interested in in Bridge to Terabithia until recently. A couple of bloggers read it and convinced me it was worth reading. I'm really looking forward to reading all three books for this one.

Emily - I kind of knew a movie was being made, but I had no idea it was so close to being released. I guess November isn't really close, but closer than I would have guessed. :-)

  9. For those of you are thinking, "I can't believe she's joining another one,"

    I didn't think that.
And I know what you mean about having a list and knowing what to read next. I avoid challenges if it looks like I have to pick a whole new set of books I wasn't planning on reading. This was my first challenge where I went to my stack (of 20!) books and picked out 3 I could use.
I hope you like Bridge to Terabithia, it broke my heart. When I asked my 9 year old if he cried, he looked at me strange!
I may add Stardust to my list; but I thought I'd leave it for next years Once Upon a Time.

  12. Elizabeth - It does make it easier to choose challenge books from the list of books I already have on schedule to read, I agree.

I will make sure to have a box of tissues handy when I read Bridge to Terabithia. Thank you for the warning!

I hope you will enjoy Stardust if you do decide to read it down the road. I enjoyed it quite a bit.

Callista - Thank you for hosting the challenge! Yes, Stardust is a book by Neil Gaiman. It's a very good book. :-)

Booklogged - Being as I'm a movie fan and a reader, this one makes perfect sense for me to do. :-)

Lately it seems like there's quite a few books I've read or want to read being made into movies . . . It's hard to keep up!

  13. Oh Wow! Another reading challenge! :D Don't you find they are all so addictive eh, Wendy? LOL. I'm still thinking whether or not to participate in this though...thanks for sharing! :)

  14. Melody - The challenges certainly can be addicting. In this case though, all of the books I'm reading are books I was already planning to read during the designated time and so it's really not like I'm taking on extra work. :-)

  15. Bridge to Terabithia is a great choice for this challenge. I loved the book when I was a kid, and have been meaning to see the movie. I love forward to hearing your thoughts on it.

  16. I'm really looking forward to reading it. I don't remember ever hearing about the book until I was an adult. I read Jacob Have I Loved when I was a child, but for some reason didn't know about this one.
