I am linking up to the Sunday Post hosted by Kim of Caffeinated Book Reviewer and The Sunday Salon (TSS) hosted by Deb Nance of Readerbuzz where participants recap our week, talk about what we are reading, share any new books that have come our way, and whatever else we want to talk about. I am also linking It's Monday! What Are you Reading? hosted by Kathryn of Book Date where readers talk about what they have been, are and will be reading.
What I Am Reading: Earlier in the week I finished Chanel Cleeton's The Most Beautiful Girl in Cuba, set in and around the Spanish-American War, focusing on the revolution in Cuba and the hardships the people there faced. Now I have settled into The Borrow a Bookshop Holiday by Kiley Dunbar, much lighter reading fare.
Mouse got my hopes up that we would be taking a little break from our Dork Diaries binge and pick up something else, but alas, as soon as we finished Tales from a Not-So-Dorky Drama Queen, we have moved onto the 10th book in the series, Tales from a Not-So-Perfect Pet Sitter by Rachel Renee Russell. We are both still enjoying the series--so it isn't really a hardship to continue.
Next up will be this month's TBR winner, which I am eager to dive into. I have also been eyeing the third book in the Heirs of Chicagoland series, Shadowed Steel by Chloe Neill.
What I Am Watching: This week we've closed out our nights alternating between Angel and Buffy episodes, one show a night. I finished season one of my re-watch of Legacies this past weekend and look forward to starting the second season sometime soon. I also started watching The Irregulars, which I am enjoying. The most recent episode of Falcon and The Winter Soldier had quite the ending, didn't it? I am always a little mad when it's over. I am so used to being able to move onto the next episode right away if I can't wait.
Off the Blog: My husband got his first vaccine today (Friday). As soon as they opened up the eligibility for him, he did not hesitate. Other than that, life is full of the usual: work, school, dance, rehearsals, Girl Scouts, sleeping and eating. Mouse had a big project to complete for her social studies class, which she got finished and turned in.
Gracie loves tummy rubs
Nina loves high places
Tell me what you have been up to! What are you reading, listening to and watching? How was your week? Do you have anything planned for this month?
Thank you for helping me decide what book from my TBR collection I should read next:
Because Reading. It’s a fun way to choose a book from your TBR pile to read. The 1st Saturday of every month, I will list 3 books I am considering reading and take a poll as to which you think I should read. I will read the winner that month. My review will follow (unfortunately, not likely in the same month, but eventually--that's all I can promise).
The results of this month's poll were close. I peeked throughout the week to see which book was winning and they each had their turn at the top. Ultimately though, only one pulled in front to take the month. Both Brown Girl Dreaming by Jacqueline Woodson and A Time to Dance by Padma Venkatraman ended tied with nine (9) votes. With eleven (11) votes, The Poet X by Elizabeth Acevedo takes the prize! I am looking forward to reading it. Thank you to everyone who voted!
Thank you for voting! I hope you all have a wonderful week! Happy Reading!

I really wish we could binge Falcon & Winter Soldier. I'm not liking this trend of NOT releasing them all at once. and yes that ending...ReplyDelete
I hope you have a great weekend! Cute pics :)
Greg - I wish we could binge the show too. We're spoiled by Netflix releasing entire seasons at once. Thank you for stopping by!Delete
Hope your husband did well with the vaccine. My arm was a little sore but other then that no issues. I'm a little worried about the 2nd but even the worst experiences I've heard have been really short lived so it's worth it. That is a crazy close TBR poll! Hope you enjoy Poet X. Have a great week!ReplyDelete
Katherine - My husband had a sore arm and headache after his first dose--so not too bad. I am glad you only experienced mild side effects. Hopefully the second won't be too bad for you either! Thank you for visiting!Delete
Your cats are beautiful. Poet X looks like a good read! My TBR list is so high as it is.ReplyDelete
The Falcon and Winter Soldier has been pretty interesting so far. I'm totally loving the bromance. lol
Marie - Thank you! The cats know it too. Haha. I hope to start on The Poet X today. I am really looking forward to it. Thank you for stopping by!Delete
This has been the first week of the schools' two week break for Easter, so I have been enjoying catching up with friends, family, books and my reviews. Currently reading the historical-mystery Justice Hall by Laurie R. King and watching series 2 of WWII drama Das Boot. Take care and happy reading in the coming week. 🙂ReplyDelete
Jessica - I hope you are enjoying your break from school! I wish the spring break here coincided with Easter, but my daughter's was in March. I hope you are enjoying your reading! I would like to read Laurie R. King's series at some point. Thank you for visiting!Delete
It's such a happy feeling to know that your husband is now vaccinated. I hope that you are able to get yours soon, too.ReplyDelete
I read an interesting article about the great reading benefits for children in getting hooked on a series. As an adult, I don't like series, but for kids it's a helpful thing.
Deb - My husband is very happy to have his first dose done. I got my vaccine earlier this year and so am good to go. :-)Delete
I am a series addict so can appreciate my daughter's love for series. I can see why series reading would benefit children and hooking them on reading. It probably is similar to re-reading--the familiarity with the characters and such.
Thank you for stopping by!
Ooooh. I forgot about The Falcon and The Winter Soldier this week. I'll have to get to that later today or tomorrow...congratulations to your husband on his first shot...and yay on The Poet X. That's what I voted for! I highly recommend it in audio, if you don't mind audio.ReplyDelete
Bryan - I hope you got a chance to catch up with The Falcon and the Winter Soldier! I am looking forward to this week's episode. I am really looking forward to reading The Poet X. I have it right here to start during my lunch break today. :-) Unfortunately, I don't have the audio, just the physical copy. But then, it's probably better this way because I haven't listened to audiobooks in over a year now so who knows when I'd be able to get to it then. Thank you for visiting!Delete
I appreciate your stretching out the Angel and Buffy episodes. I'm working my way through all episodes of The Big Bang Theory and am currently on Season 10, which I've been eking out. But on Friday night I was feeling a bit sad and desperate, so ended up watching 6 back to back! Still, it cheered me up:). Have a great week, Wendy.ReplyDelete
Sarah - I've only seen the first season of The Big Bang Theory. We watched it when it first came out. We should consider catching the rest of it. Thank you for stopping by!Delete
These days I prefer to wait and then binge a season all at once.ReplyDelete
Wishing you a great reading week
Shelleyrae - Then you don't have to suffer through cliffhangers. My husband is worried about spoilers though for Marvel shows and so we watch them no matter how torturous it is for me. LOL Thank you for visiting!Delete
Lol at your kitties! I loved Buffy and Angel - I should rewatch them!ReplyDelete
Erin - I've re-watched them a few times, although it has been a while since the last time. We're enjoying seeing them again. :-) Thank you for stopping by!Delete
I like the idea of choosing a book with the help of others.ReplyDelete
Enjoy your pick.
Congrats on your husband getting his shot, and I hope the second one goes well, too.
Enjoy your week!
Laurel-Rain - I really enjoy having others help me select a book to read for the month. :-) Thank you for visiting!Delete
My husband and daughter were both able to get their first shot a couple of weeks ago. I just became eligible to sign up a couple of days ago so hopefully, I will get a turn soon. I love that both you and your daughter are enjoying the Dork Diaries books so much. I hope that you enjoy Poet X!ReplyDelete
Carole - I hope you are able to get your vaccine soon. My daughter was asking when her turn will be. She hates shots, but she wants her vaccine because she hates the pandemic more. I am not sure when she'll be eligible. Maybe before the end of the year.Delete
Thank you for stopping by!
Yay for vaccines! Glad you had a nice week. I have seen one episode of the Irregulars so far, I think I need to make some time to keep watching it! I'm looking forward to your thoughts on Poet XReplyDelete
Victoria - I hope you continue to enjoy The Irregulars! I have seen four episodes so far and am enjoying it. Hopefully I can catch more next weekend. Thank you for visiting!Delete
love how high the cats get. maybe give some advice on how to make cats more social. I watched my brothers cat and one was super social, the other hid under the bed.ReplyDelete
Trin - No height is too high for Nina, it would seem. I wish I knew the secret to getting cats to be more social. Whenever we would have a pet sitter in the past, Gracie would always hide under the bed or in the closet. Unless she knows someone, she runs and hides. And while Nina is a curious cat, she is not an affectionate one and is very picky about who can touch her.Delete
Thank you for stopping by!
Glad your husband got his first dose of the vaccine. And watching Buffy is always a good thing! Hope you have a great week. :DReplyDelete
Lark - We enjoy Buffy. :-) Thank you for visiting and I hope you have a great week too!Delete
An ordinary week is a good week. I'm glad your husband got his vaccine. I had no reaction to either. My daughter had some minor arm pain and a headache. But we have had both doses now and are happy to have them. I could never do a TBR poll. I'm too moody.ReplyDelete
Anne - Books of My Heart This is my Sunday Post
Anne - Yes, ordinary is good when it comes to my weeks these days. :-) I am glad your daughter and you both got your second vaccines! I tend to be a moody reader too. Usually I can at least guess in the ballpark of where my mood is heading when I choose books for the poll, but sometimes it doesn't work out.Delete
Thank you for stopping by!
Love the kitty photos! I hope you have a great week Wendy :)ReplyDelete
Stacy - Thank you! I hope you have a great week too! Thank you for visiting!Delete
I need to go back and rewatch Buffy and Angel I think. It's been so long since I have. I tried to read Clap When Landing by Acevedo, but I have trouble with books written that way. Someone suggested I try listening to the audiobook, so I'll probably do that. Hope you have a good week!ReplyDelete
Lisa Loves Literature
Lisa - I love novels written in verse but do not read a lot of them. I especially love to read them out loud. If you do try one in audio, I hope you enjoy it more. I can see why that way might work better if you don't especially enjoy reading them. Thank you for stopping by!Delete
I loved Angel and Buffy and have probably watched the shows a few times all the way through.ReplyDelete
Mary - Same here. They are great shows. Thank you for visiting!Delete
Poet X is a wonderful novel so I am sure you will enjoy it. It sounds like your daughter is loving the Dork Diaries, it's so great when someone loves a series so much that they just plow heir way through them all.ReplyDelete
Helen - I am sure I will too! I am glad to finally be reading it. I just need that little extra nudge. :-)Delete
Yes! She loves the Dork Diaries. I love seeing her enthusiastic about reading. She's struggled with reading in the past and has been a reluctant reader. I'm just so proud of how far she's come this year--and to see her getting so excited about reading is wonderful.
Thank you for stopping by!
Brown Girl Dreaming is also a must. Very beautiful and super short anywayReplyDelete
Emma - I have a copy on my TBR shelf and so definitely plan to read that one too at some point! Thank you for visiting!Delete
I have all of Chanel Cleeton's books on my radar but have yet to pick one up. Do you recommend the series, or one in particular?ReplyDelete
Molly - This was my first by Chanel Cleeton, actually. I enjoyed The Most Beautiful Girl in Cuba. It is listed as the fourth book in the series, but my understanding is each series focuses on different protagonists, and this one is a prequel time wise to the other books in the series. I liked it enough to be interested in reading the other books.Delete
Thank you for stopping by!
I am missing my shows! I have been playing catch up since being gone unexpectedly from home. Good thing they are so patient.ReplyDelete
Nise' - I hope your mother is doing well after her surgery. I am sure she was glad to have your help. Have fun catching up on your shows! Thank you for visiting!Delete
I was just telling someone that the one drawback to Disney Plus is that they only release one episode at a time. I'm impatient and really just want to binge all of the episodes at once. I am enjoying Falcon and the Winter Soldier though. I hope you enjoy Poet X. I've got that one sitting on my shelf to read as well.ReplyDelete
Suzanne - Yes! I much prefer the way Netflix does it, dropping the entire season at once. If my husband wasn't so worried about spoilers, we'd probably wait until the series was out completely. Thank you for stopping by!Delete
Glad your hubby is able to get his vaccine! Hubby just got his second jab and I'll get mine in two weeks! It's such a nice feeling. Those kitties are soooooo cute! I would rub that belly all day long. So cute!ReplyDelete
I need to rewatch some Buffy and Angel. Irregulars is on my list. I watched the first episode and am looking forward to more. I'm so bummed about the reports of Whedon's abuse. Do you have plans to watch the Nevers? I'm torn but I'll at least try the first few episodes.
Poet X has been on my list for awhile. I hope you enjoy it. I may read it this summer.
Heather - Yay for getting vaccines! Soon we'll be a house fully vaccinated. Except for Mouse. I am not sure when her turn will come. I am sure they are testing for her age group now, but I haven't heard where they are in the process.Delete
I am really disappointed in Whedon. I haven't heard too much about The Nevers. We don't subscribe to HBO though and so it wasn't something I paid much attention to. It does sound like something I would enjoy though. I heard he stepped down when the stories about his behavior came out. I guess that's something.
I am really looking forward to reading Poet X. I hope you enjoy it when you read it too.
Thank you for visiting!
Yay cat pics! And congrats on your husband being able to get his first vaccine dose!ReplyDelete
Eustacia - I can't resist taking pictures of my cats. :-) My husband is very relieved to have his first shot out of the way. Thank you for stopping by!Delete
Falcon is on our list. My son insists we watch it. He also insisted I watch WandaVision which I felt was clever but just okay.ReplyDelete
However, I fell into THEM on Prime. It's horrifying. Stephen King recommended it one night on Twitter and he's not wrong. It's pretty terrifying.
Ti - I hope you like Falcon and the Winter Soldier when you watch it. It's much more straightforward than WandaVision was so hopefully you will like it more.Delete
I have heard of Them but haven't seen it yet. I may have to check it out. I don't watch Prime shows very often. I often forget it exists.
Thank you for visiting!
I'm with you about The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. I think it would probably be better as a movie. WandaVision, because of what it was, was just more episodic and worked better as a TV show (even though I didn't know what was going on until the 3rd or 4th episode).ReplyDelete
I'm glad your husband got his first shot. My husband is eligible as of Monday and I may get up early on Monday morning and find an appointment for him. I'm getting my 2nd shot a week from Thursday and I will be so relieved when I pass the two-week mark afterwards!
Melinda - I love that they are making these shows move quality. I hope your husband is able to get an appointment for his shot soon. And yay for getting your second shot soon! I'm so glad to have mine. I read an article last night that Moderna (the vaccine I got) is working on a Booster they hope to have out by the end of the year to help protect against some of the variants. It'll be interesting to see if the other's follow suit or if they'll need to.Delete
Thank you for stopping by!
The Poet X was amazing--esp in audio with the author giving it her own voice! I love all of her books.ReplyDelete
Lisa - I am looking forward to reading The Poet X. I hope to start it this afternoon. Thank you for visiting!Delete
We've been watching Buffy as well and it's been fun to rewatch :) Glad to hear your husband got his first vaccine. Also, your cats are adorable and there can never be too many cat pictures :)ReplyDelete
Lindsey - Thank you! I snap way too many photos of them. LOL Thank you for stopping by!Delete
Yay for your husband on getting his first dose! I feel like slowly but surely we'll get there. Granted not so good news on the J&J vaccine right now. Sigh. Really excited you'll be reading The Poet X. I voted for that one because I want to read it. I actually think I had borrowed it from the library one time but had to go back unread for lack of time. Hope you have a great week ahead!ReplyDelete
Iliana - Yes, it's disappointing about the Johnson and Johnson vaccine. Thank you for voting! I am looking forward to starting The Poet X today. Thank you for visiting!Delete
I'm hoping to read With the Fire on High this month and so may be very curious to know what you think of Poet X as well. Enjoy your reading!ReplyDelete
Congratulations on your husband's first shot!
Athira - I am interested in The Fire on High also. I hope you like it and look forward to your thoughts on it. Thank you for stopping by!Delete
I'm glad to hear your husband had gotten his first dose of vaccination, Wendy. We'd registered for an appointment so hopefully we'll get to hear from them soon.ReplyDelete
Love the kitties pics and I hope you enjoy reading The Poet X.
Melody - I hope you are able to get your vaccines soon! Thank you for visiting!Delete
