Weekly Mews: Just Another Week & Cat Pictures (because there can never be enough)

I am linking up to the Sunday Post hosted by Kim of Caffeinated Book Reviewer and The Sunday Salon (TSS) hosted by Deb Nance of Readerbuzz  where participants recap our week, talk about what we are reading, share any new books that have come our way, and whatever else we want to talk about. I am also linking It's Monday! What Are you Reading? hosted by Kathryn of Book Date where readers talk about what they have been, are and will be reading.

What I Am Reading: Earlier in the week I finished Chanel Cleeton's The Most Beautiful Girl in Cuba, set in and around the Spanish-American War, focusing on the revolution in Cuba and the hardships the people there faced. Now I have settled into The Borrow a Bookshop Holiday by Kiley Dunbar, much lighter reading fare.

Mouse got my hopes up that we would be taking a little break from our Dork Diaries binge and pick up something else, but alas, as soon as we finished Tales from a Not-So-Dorky Drama Queen, we have moved onto the 10th book in the series, Tales from a  Not-So-Perfect Pet Sitter by Rachel Renee Russell. We are both still enjoying the series--so it isn't really a hardship to continue.

Next up will be this month's TBR winner, which I am eager to dive into. I have also been eyeing the third book in the Heirs of Chicagoland series, Shadowed Steel by Chloe Neill.

What I Am Watching: This week we've closed out our nights alternating between Angel and Buffy episodes, one show a night. I finished season one of my re-watch of Legacies this past weekend and look forward to starting the second season sometime soon. I also started watching The Irregulars, which I am enjoying. The most recent episode of Falcon and The Winter Soldier had quite the ending, didn't it? I am always a little mad when it's over. I am so used to being able to move onto the next episode right away if I can't wait.

Off the Blog: My husband got his first vaccine today (Friday). As soon as they opened up the eligibility for him, he did not hesitate. Other than that, life is full of the usual: work, school, dance, rehearsals, Girl Scouts, sleeping and eating. Mouse had a big project to complete for her social studies class, which she got finished and turned in.

Gracie loves tummy rubs

Nina loves high places

Tell me what you have been up to! What are you reading, listening to and watching? How was your week? Do you have anything planned for this month?

Thank you for helping me decide what book from my TBR collection I should read next:

My TBR List is hosted by the awesome Michelle at Because Reading. It’s a fun way to choose a book from your TBR pile to read. The 1st Saturday of every month, I will list 3 books I am considering reading and take a poll as to which you think I should read. I will read the winner that month. My review will follow (unfortunately, not likely in the same month, but eventually--that's all I can promise).

The results of this month's poll were close. I peeked throughout the week to see which book was winning and they each had their turn at the top. Ultimately though, only one pulled in front to take the month. Both Brown Girl Dreaming by Jacqueline Woodson and A Time to Dance by Padma Venkatraman ended tied with nine (9) votes. With eleven (11) votes, The Poet X by Elizabeth Acevedo takes the prize! I am looking forward to reading it. Thank you to everyone who voted!

Winner: The Poet X by Elizabeth Acevedo

Thank you for voting! I hope you all have a wonderful week! Happy Reading!

  1. I really wish we could binge Falcon & Winter Soldier. I'm not liking this trend of NOT releasing them all at once. and yes that ending...

I hope you have a great weekend! Cute pics :)

    1. Greg - I wish we could binge the show too. We're spoiled by Netflix releasing entire seasons at once. Thank you for stopping by!

  2. Hope your husband did well with the vaccine. My arm was a little sore but other then that no issues. I'm a little worried about the 2nd but even the worst experiences I've heard have been really short lived so it's worth it. That is a crazy close TBR poll! Hope you enjoy Poet X. Have a great week!

    1. Katherine - My husband had a sore arm and headache after his first dose--so not too bad. I am glad you only experienced mild side effects. Hopefully the second won't be too bad for you either! Thank you for visiting!

The Falcon and Winter Soldier has been pretty interesting so far. I'm totally loving the bromance. lol

  4. This has been the first week of the schools' two week break for Easter, so I have been enjoying catching up with friends, family, books and my reviews. Currently reading the historical-mystery Justice Hall by Laurie R. King and watching series 2 of WWII drama Das Boot. Take care and happy reading in the coming week. 🙂

    1. Jessica - I hope you are enjoying your break from school! I wish the spring break here coincided with Easter, but my daughter's was in March. I hope you are enjoying your reading! I would like to read Laurie R. King's series at some point. Thank you for visiting!

  5. It's such a happy feeling to know that your husband is now vaccinated. I hope that you are able to get yours soon, too.

I read an interesting article about the great reading benefits for children in getting hooked on a series. As an adult, I don't like series, but for kids it's a helpful thing.

    1. Deb - My husband is very happy to have his first dose done. I got my vaccine earlier this year and so am good to go. :-)

I am a series addict so can appreciate my daughter's love for series. I can see why series reading would benefit children and hooking them on reading. It probably is similar to re-reading--the familiarity with the characters and such.

      Thank you for stopping by!

  6. Ooooh. I forgot about The Falcon and The Winter Soldier this week. I'll have to get to that later today or tomorrow...congratulations to your husband on his first shot...and yay on The Poet X. That's what I voted for! I highly recommend it in audio, if you don't mind audio.

    1. Bryan - I hope you got a chance to catch up with The Falcon and the Winter Soldier! I am looking forward to this week's episode. I am really looking forward to reading The Poet X. I have it right here to start during my lunch break today. :-) Unfortunately, I don't have the audio, just the physical copy. But then, it's probably better this way because I haven't listened to audiobooks in over a year now so who knows when I'd be able to get to it then. Thank you for visiting!

  7. I appreciate your stretching out the Angel and Buffy episodes. I'm working my way through all episodes of The Big Bang Theory and am currently on Season 10, which I've been eking out. But on Friday night I was feeling a bit sad and desperate, so ended up watching 6 back to back! Still, it cheered me up:). Have a great week, Wendy.

    1. Carole - I hope you are able to get your vaccine soon. My daughter was asking when her turn will be. She hates shots, but she wants her vaccine because she hates the pandemic more. I am not sure when she'll be eligible. Maybe before the end of the year.

  13. love how high the cats get. maybe give some advice on how to make cats more social. I watched my brothers cat and one was super social, the other hid under the bed.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Trin - No height is too high for Nina, it would seem. I wish I knew the secret to getting cats to be more social. Whenever we would have a pet sitter in the past, Gracie would always hide under the bed or in the closet. Unless she knows someone, she runs and hides. And while Nina is a curious cat, she is not an affectionate one and is very picky about who can touch her.

  15. An ordinary week is a good week. I'm glad your husband got his vaccine. I had no reaction to either. My daughter had some minor arm pain and a headache. But we have had both doses now and are happy to have them. I could never do a TBR poll. I'm too moody.

  17. I need to go back and rewatch Buffy and Angel I think. It's been so long since I have. I tried to read Clap When Landing by Acevedo, but I have trouble with books written that way. Someone suggested I try listening to the audiobook, so I'll probably do that. Hope you have a good week!

Yes! She loves the Dork Diaries. I love seeing her enthusiastic about reading. She's struggled with reading in the past and has been a reluctant reader. I'm just so proud of how far she's come this year--and to see her getting so excited about reading is wonderful.

  21. I have all of Chanel Cleeton's books on my radar but have yet to pick one up. Do you recommend the series, or one in particular?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Molly - This was my first by Chanel Cleeton, actually. I enjoyed The Most Beautiful Girl in Cuba. It is listed as the fourth book in the series, but my understanding is each series focuses on different protagonists, and this one is a prequel time wise to the other books in the series. I liked it enough to be interested in reading the other books.

  23. I was just telling someone that the one drawback to Disney Plus is that they only release one episode at a time. I'm impatient and really just want to binge all of the episodes at once. I need to rewatch some Buffy and Angel. Irregulars is on my list. I watched the first episode and am looking forward to more. I'm so bummed about the reports of Whedon's abuse. Do you have plans to watch the Nevers? I'm torn but I'll at least try the first few episodes.

Poet X has been on my list for awhile. I hope you enjoy it. I may read it this summer.

    1. Heather - Yay for getting vaccines! Soon we'll be a house fully vaccinated. Except for Mouse. I am not sure when her turn will come. I am sure they are testing for her age group now, but I haven't heard where they are in the process.

I am really disappointed in Whedon. I haven't heard too much about The Nevers. We don't subscribe to HBO though and so it wasn't something I paid much attention to. It does sound like something I would enjoy though. I heard he stepped down when the stories about his behavior came out. I guess that's something.

I am really looking forward to reading Poet X. I hope you enjoy it when you read it too.

  26. Falcon is on our list. My son insists we watch it. He also insisted I watch WandaVision which I felt was clever but just okay.

However, I fell into THEM on Prime. It's horrifying. Stephen King recommended it one night on Twitter and he's not wrong. It's pretty terrifying.

    1. Ti - I hope you like Falcon and the Winter Soldier when you watch it. It's much more straightforward than WandaVision was so hopefully you will like it more.

I have heard of Them but haven't seen it yet. I may have to check it out. I don't watch Prime shows very often. I often forget it exists.

  27. I'm with you about The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. I think it would probably be better as a movie. WandaVision, because of what it was, was just more episodic and worked better as a TV show (even though I didn't know what was going on until the 3rd or 4th episode).

I'm glad your husband got his first shot. My husband is eligible as of Monday and I may get up early on Monday morning and find an appointment for him. I'm getting my 2nd shot a week from Thursday and I will be so relieved when I pass the two-week mark afterwards!
