Top Ten Tuesday: Longest Books I’ve Ever Read

Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by the lovely Jana at The Artsy Reader Girl.

This week's Top Ten Tuesday topic is the Longest Books I’ve Ever Read, at least according to Goodreads. Whether I read a longer book before I began keeping track, I cannot say. By the end of the year, I hope to add two more books to this list, Leo Tolstoy's War and Peace and Les Misérables by Victor Hugo.

The Stand by Stephen King (1,439 pgs)

Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norell by Susanna Clarke (1,006 pgs)

The Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett (973 pgs)

The Crimson Petal and the White by Michel Faber (944 pgs)

I Know This Much is True by Wally Lamb (897 pgs)

A Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin (848 pgs)

The Way the Crow Flies by Ann-Marie MacDonald (848 pgs)

Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy (838 pgs)

Winter's Tale by Mark Helprin (768 pgs)

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows by J.K. Rowling (759 pgs)

What are some the longest  books you have read?

  3. I didn't know that The Stand was that long. It would have bumped one of the books off my list. I've also read I Know This Much is True, Anna Karinena, and Game of Thrones. I want to read War and Peace and Les Misérables as well.

    1. Greg - I am not sure--if my two current ones are anything to go by, it's because the authors like to use a lot of words. LOL The Pillars of the Earth went so fast for me. It didn't seem so long when I was reading it. Thank you for stopping by!

  5. Game of Thrones is the only book on your list this week that I have read. I really wanted to enjoy it but it was just way too dense for e and I felt like I was trapped within it pages hahaha

  6. I actually forgot how long the Deathly Hallows was. When I read it, I didn't feel the page count, you know? But in other books I do, so I tend to avoid 500+ pages books. They are just too much for my brain to handle for some reason.

    1. Verushka - I didn't feel the page count either with any of the Harry Potter books. They all went way too fast. Thank you for stopping by!

  9. Only one classic made my list, Jane Eyre. I've thought about reading more. Sometimes, I want to but most times I don't. My longest books are from the Twilight series and the Lunar Chronicles series.

    1. Amy - Jane Eyre is one of my all time favorites. I enjoy classics from time to time--a lot depends on what the book is about. But then, that's true for all books I read. I've read the Twilight books and first book in the Lunar Chronicles. Thank you for visiting!

    1. Aymee - I liked The Stand. I have only read four King novels so far and have a couple more on my TBR pile. Not all his books appeal to me, but several do. I really admire the author in general and think he's a great storyteller. Thank you for visiting!

    1. Donna Marie - My copy was only 766 pages. It didn't make the list because I was only looking at books I read once I started tracking my reading. Order of the Phoenix was in my pre-book journaling days. Thanks for visiting!

  16. That's funny, two of the longest books I've read are the same as yours: The Stand, and Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell. My other longest read? Atlas Shrugged which has 1,070 pages. Cheers!

  17. This is not a political statement, it just indicates my interest in all things Civil War : Gone With the Wind, and Douglas Southall Freeman's 4 volume of Roert E. Lee and 3 volume "Lee's Lieutenants." Each volume is more than 700 pages.

    1. Mary - I saw Gone With the Wind on a few lists. My dad was really into the Civil War when he was alive and my mom gave my husband a lot of my dad's old books. Thank you for visiting!

  19. We have a lot of books in common! My list is pretty much all Stephen King and George RR Martin. Those authors don’t seem capable of writing reasonable-length books.

Aj @ Read All The Things!

  20. Those are some chunky reads! I used to read longer books and not mind too much but now I tend to choose shorter novels. So cool that you are going to read those other two classics this year. You can do it!

    1. Iliana - I tend to gravitate more toward shorter books too. I am making good progress on both Les Misérables and War and Peace. I hope to finish both by the New Year. I have just over a quarter to go in each book. Thanks for stopping by!

  22. KUDOS to you for reading all of these, Wendy!! :)

The only book on your list that I ATTEMPTED to read was "Anna Karenina". I couldn't finish it. Aside from the fact that I actively dislike reading anything related to infidelity -- having been cheated on myself -- the book has chapters that are totally UNRELATED to the story. In fact, these chapters would have worked as a separate nonfiction book! I happen to own this very same edition, too. I love the cover, but that's about it.

As for "Winter's Tale", it's been languishing on my shelves for the looooongest time, lol. I have the hardcover edition with the horse and starry blue background on the cover. Yeah, I know.... I need to actually READ it! Lol.

Thanks for sharing!! HUGS TO YOU AND MOUSE!! <3 <3 :) :)

    1. Maria - I loved Anna Karenina, but I can see how it wouldn't be for everyone. The Russian classic authors do tend to go on sometimes. Of course, Victor Hugo who was French could too. I don't mind though. I am enjoying both War and Peace and Les Misérables. I sometimes will shy away from books about infidelity, but I don't go out of my way to avoid them all together. For me, it depends on how the subject matter is presented. And Anna's story was only a fraction of the novel, and I was more deeply involved with other main characters in the book. But I can understand your wanting to avoid the topic whenever possible given your personal experience.

If you read Winter's Tale, I hope you like it more than I did. It was okay, but I was expecting much more from it.

      Thanks for stopping by!

  24. I tend to shy away from longest books yet I'd like to give The Stand a try since I've heard nothing but good reviews about that book. And of course I couldn't resist from reading Harry Potter books because they're so much fun and full of adventures.
