Where Is Your Bookmark? (10/20/2015)

I decided to join in Dewey's Read-a-thon this past Saturday. I hadn't signed up, and so my participation was unofficial and informal. The plans I had for that day had fallen through, and I was feeling kind of bummed as a result. What better way to cheer myself up than to lose myself in reading? I managed to get in about 10 hours of reading, finishing off a book I had begun the night before along with reading another novel. I also read two graphic novels that had been sitting on my TBR shelf for about five or so years. I took frequent breaks, including lunch out and an ice cream run later in the evening. My husband and daughter were pretty good about allowing me to read, although it meant my husband didn't get his nap. I felt a sense of accomplishment when my head hit the pillow Saturday night.

Sunday we made our annual trip to the pumpkin patch. Mouse had fun picking out a couple of pumpkins. This week we hope to make time to carve or decorate them. We finally got the Halloween and fall decorations out of the garage. The candy corn pot holders are now hanging from our front door thanks to Mouse.

I currently am reading Lilith Saintcrow's Hunter, Healer, the sequel to The Society. It is a paranormal romance/thriller sort of book that has me racing through the pages. I hesitate to say too much about Hunter, Healer, given The Society ended with a cliff hanger. The two books really do go hand in hand.  The series features Rowan Price, a psychic much desired by good and evil forces. The books have more of a science fiction feel to them than a fantasy one, given the special ops units and fire power involved. Not my usual type of read, and yet I enjoyed The Society more than I expected and am anxious to see how it all turns out in Hunter, Healer.

First Paragraph of Hunter, Healer:

Kick. Another Kick. Knee. Solid contact. Move in. Move in, get going, do it faster, faster, precise, put your weight behind it, sweetheart! Do it. Punch. Ouch, don't flex your wrist, throw an elbow, keep going, stitch in the side. Move. Move. MOVE!

I stopped here because the next paragraph is more revealing. By revealing I mean it contains a possible spoiler for those who have not (but want to) read the first book.

Teasers from Hunter, Healer at 26% in which we catch Rowan in a reflective moment

The old pain rose, and the old rage with it. She stared out at the lights, then reached up and spread her had against the chill glass. Mist outlined her fingers, living warmth meeting cold hardness.

What do you think? Would you keep reading?

What are you reading at the moment?  Is it anything you would recommend?

I think when I finish Hunter, Healer, I will be ready for something more based in reality. maybe A Dictionary of Mutual Understanding by Jackie Copleton or The Headmaster's Wager by Vincent Lam. Both are calling to me, and rather loudly at that.

Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by the lovely ladies at Broke and Bookish.

This week's  Top Ten Tuesday theme is 10 Wishes I'd Ask The Book Genie To Grant Me. This was harder than I thougth it would be.

1. I wish I had a Time-Turner like Hermione Granger's. Then I could get everything done I want to, including make a good dent in my TBR pile plus get all those reviews and posts written in a timely fashion.

2. I wish I had started recording the books I read earlier in my life. I started keeping a reading journal in 2003. So many books read undocumented. It seems a crime.

3. I would love to have a Library Tardis.  Small on the outside, but big on the inside.

4. I would wish for a photographic memory. Or maybe just semi-perfect recall. Just better recall would do. I just think it would be cool.

5. On a more practical note, I would love a book-shelf themed quilt.

6. Who wouldn't want unlimited funds for books? I think this one is self-explanatory.

7. I wish I had read Leo Tolstoy's War and Peace already--and loved it. Okay, so at this point I just want to have the reading of the book behind me.

8. I would love to actually be able to step into the pages of a book and into the world I am reading about, to come and go as a I please.

9. This is more of a hope than a wish, but I would like to see my daughter find pleasure in reading throughout her life.

10. Along a similar vain, I wish that the non-readers in my life could experience the joys of reading at least once or twice a year--at the very least.

If you had a Book Genie that could grant unlimited wishes, what would you wish for?

    1. Laura - I hope your daughter comes to love reading too. Mine is more into making up her own stories right now--which I love too. Maybe she'll be a writer. ;-)

  2. The first paragraph is very creative. I'd definitely feel the need to keep reading. I like your wishes, especially the last two. Its wonderful when all those around you love to read, and talk, about books. If I were a genie, I'd grant you your wishes.

    1. Margot - It does make you want to know more, doesn't it? I thought so too!

Yes! I love to talk about books and I would love it if those around me enjoyed reading in the same way--or at least close to it--as we do. Think of the great conversations we could all have!

  3. I'm not so much into sci-fi but I do like the opening of Hunter, Hunter. Your wishes are great - I wish I'd kept a reading journal too - my list of reads only goes back as far as 2010 and I love having a record of them. Having a child that loves reading is great - my daughter is a big reader and it linked us when she was young and it still does now, I love the way her face lights up when I get a book post!

    1. Cleo - Hunter, Healer is good so far. Though I admit I am kind of anxious to finish it because there is another book I really want to start.

Why didn't we think to keep track of our reading sooner?! I guess we'll just have to be satisfied with what we do have.

My daughter has my old Kindle and was complaining the other day that I'm always sending her my books with no pictures. That isn't quite true, but every time I buy or download a new book, it shows up on everyone's Kindle in our house. :-S She enjoys reading now--well, being read to, and I only hope it lasts when she is older and can read on her own. Otherwise I will be the crazy book mom she rolls her eyes about when talking about me.

  4. What fun. I'm glad you still got reading in even though it was "unofficial." And ah, pumpkin patches are just the best, aren't they?

    1. Jillian - A friend of mine spent the day reading with her young daughter and that made me feel guilty that I didn't do that too. I'm glad I got to spend some uninterrupted time reading though. It's pretty rare!

Next year I am hoping we can plan ahead a little more and go to a nearby farm next year--the pumpkin patch we went to this year was just a tiny one. Mouse had fun, regardless and that's what matters most.

  5. Great list :) I also want my child to find pleasure in reading. he just turned two and so far, he likes flipping thru the pages, occasionally ripping them off XD
    a reading journal sounds brilliant!

    1. Mijaru - Thank you! I remember those days. :-) My daughter is 4 and while she ripped the occasional page. Her favorite activity for awhile there was just pulling books off my shelves and leaving them piled on the floor. :-) She's outgrown that now, fortunately.

  6. A bit daunted by the whole idea of this Read-a-thon - why I don't quite now - I think to join in in this informal way is a great way of participating.

Hmm, this weeks teasers don't particularly appeal to me and certainly wouldn't encourage me to read the book - sorry.

Loving your 10 wishes. So many of these would make my list with number 6 at the top.

Busy reading Picture Perfect by Jodi Picoult. Not her usual type of novel, I'm not enjoying it as much as her previous offerings.

    1. Tracy - I know what you mean. I have never participated in the Dewey read-a-thon before. There always seems to be so much involved! Challenges, constant social media updates . . . I would rather just spend my time reading. Luckily, that's okay too!

I imagined Hunter, Healer wouldn't appeal to many people when I posted the teaser. I almost chose to feature a book I read last week, but decided to just go with what I was reading now.

I haven't read Picture Perfect. That was one of her books that didn't appeal to me. I'm sorry it isn't proving to be as good as her others you've read.

  7. Mouse is really growing! Right now the time-turner would be a great help for me --so many things to do, books to read, and I want it all.

    1. Jenclair - She is growing so fast. I cleaned out her pants' drawer this past weekend and realized she is in desperate need of new pants. Most of hers are too small for her now. She's been wearing shorts and dresses all summer. With the colder weather, she needs better options.

If I had a genie, I would ask for a time-turner for you too. I imagine it would come in quite handy for many of us!

  8. Sounds like your unplanned readathon was a success! Funny how it works out that way. I dropped in for a few hours Saturday morning and loved it, too.

Not sure Hunter, Healer is for me, but I love the photo of Mouse in the pumpkin

    1. JoAnn - I had fun spending the day reading--but I did feel a little guilty ignoring my family most of the day. I'm glad I could do it though. I felt refreshed after. :-)

  15. How great that you got to read so much, even unofficially, during the Readathon. I have done that a time or two...someday I want to actually sign up.

The book sounds fascinating, and while it is not my usual read, I do love characters with psychic abilities. Thanks for sharing...and for visiting my blog.

I like your No. 9 and No. 10 on the list! My oldest two (boys) love to read, but my younger son and my daughter do not. It hurts to see how much they are missing out on, but they don't see it.

Alas, having a bookworm mother does not mean the kids will love reading. Sadly.

    1. Laurel-Rain - Me too. Someday I'll sign up officially too. :-)

I like books with characters who have psychic abilities too. I don't often read the kind with special ops units, but I'm enjoying the series. As far as I know, the other has only written the two books and so I am hoping this one won't end in the cliff hanger like the last book did.

You can never tell who will and won't be readers. I hope my daughter will be, but if not, that's okay too. I'll love her just the same. :-)

There are so many places I would love to be able to visit, both fictional and real, that I come across in my reading. It'd be so cool if we actually could.

  20. I love the idea of just informally entering the readathon. I've been wanting to enter but the timing has never been right. I've been trying to think up rewards for hitting certain goals weight loss wise and my very own readathon would be a fun one! I'm definitely curious about the teaser. The writing is very vivid.
I had a TARDIS library too! Great minds think a like. And the bookish quilt is fabulous. I might learn how to quilt just so I can do a bookish quilt (though mine would be WAY simpler)

    1. Katherine - It's been the same for me. The timing is never right. I'm glad it worked out this--more or less. :-) I like the idea of a readathon being a reward for weight loss. Maybe I should try something like that too . . . It might be good at getting me back into exercising. Goodness knows I need to get back on that wagon.

I love the idea of a Tardis library. :-)
