Where is Your Bookmark? (11/05/2013)

I had hoped to take lots of photos to share of our adventures this weekend, but it did not work out that way. It was a crazy busy weekend with the last day of the soccer season, a visit to the hospital for our flu shots, and the Walk and Roll event in support of Families of Spinal Muscular Atrophy (FMSA).

I barely had time to crack open a book this weekend, but when I did find a moment, I began reading Susan Elia MacNeal's His Majesty's Hope, the third book in the Maggie Hope series set in World War II.  It's such a fun series, and I'm already caught up in this most recent installment.  If only work wasn't getting in the way of my reading time!  Just before this, I read a mystery called Darkness First by James Hayman, my first by the author.  It was quite an intense story, which I enjoyed quite a bit.  Darkness First is part of a series, although I am not sure where it falls in the line up. I will likely know though by the time I review the book.

What are you reading right now?  Is it something you would recommend?

Every Tuesday Diane from Bibliophile By the Sea hosts
First Chapter First Paragraph Tuesday Intros, where
participants share the first paragraph (or a few) of a
book they are reading or thinking about reading soon.

My introduction today comes from An Illustrated Death by Judi Culbertson, a cozy mystery I will be reviewing tomorrow:
The dead man smiled up at me.
I stared back sadly.  Then I read the newspaper clipping on my worktable one more time.
Would you continue reading?

  1. Loving your photos, that pink jacket is so cute, your daughter incredibly sweet..

Loving 'the dead man smiled up at me'. It puts me in mind of that nonsense poem 'One fine day in the middle of the night'.

  14. She is really growing up.
Our neighbor's son has SMA. He doesn't let it stop him from living life for sure. I think he is about 11.
Been listening to a short book, Rabbit-Proof Fence by Doris Pilkington. It is set in Australia in 1931. It is based on the story of her mother. The gov't decided to take half English kids away from their aboriginal families and put them in "schools" to learn English and be domestics. Her mother Molly and her 2 sisters ran away from the school and headed back to their home.
It has been quite interesting and I read that there is a movie also which I may try to watch.

    1. Carla - She's growing up way too fast! She surprises me every day with something new she's learned.

I am sorry for your neighbor's son, but am glad to hear he is not letting it get him down. My friend's (the one who was in charge of the walk) son is a teenager now, diagnosed when he was 9, I believe. He's been having a rough time of it, emotionally and physically.

I hope you liked Rabbit-Proof Fence. I didn't know it was a book. Or maybe I did and forgot. Anyway, I saw the movie years ago and it really made an impression on me. Let me know what you think of the movie, if you do watch it!

  15. I love love love that picture of Mouse with the kitty jacket and the awesome pose. She looks like she has so much character and spunk! Love it! Even though it's probably much warmer than you'd like, it looks like the weather is providing for lots of outdoor fun!

    1. Trish - I caught her in the act of dancing in that pose. :-) She was very lively that day. LOL

It looks like our weather will be cooling down to match the season by the end of the weekend. As you probably saw on Facebook, just last weekend it was warm enough to run through the sprinklers.
