BBAW: Some Blogger Love

The assignment for today is to talk about the blogs we love that did not get short-listed for the BBAW Awards. The awards are really only a small part of what BBAW is about. The week is meant as a celebration of all book bloggers, every single one of us. We each contribute to the community in our own unique way.

Of all the BBAW topics, today's has been the most difficult for me. I am not good at singling out blogs. I read so many fantastic blogs, and it would be impossible to give them all a shout out. Oh, but it's tempting. Do you have a few weeks? I decided against naming a blog for the individual awards like was suggested--I follow so many that could easily fit into each category. Instead, I settled on highlighting five blogs (and narrowing it down was next to impossible, let me tell you!) that I think you should know about.

Here is just a very small taste of some my favorite blog stops:

Meghan of Medieval Bookworm somehow managed to write her dissertation and still read an unfathomable number of books. Her insightful book reviews have only added more weight to my already hefty TBR collection. From the name of her blog, you can guess she is a lover of historical fiction, but her reading tastes are quite broad.

The title of Carrie's blog, Books and Movies, alone was enough to make me sit up and take notice. She combines two of my passions in one place. I first met Carrie on her blog, Mommy Brain. Carrie always has something interesting to say about what she is reading or watching. Sitting down and reading her blog is like visiting with a long-time friend.

I had the opportunity to meet Tracy, aka Gentle Reader, from Shelf Life this past spring at the L.A. Times Festival of Books. We did not get to chat much, but, you know how there are people you know are good souls right from the start? She's definitely a good soul. I've been a follower of Tracy's blog for a couple of years now. Her love for reading comes across in her blog, and I have her to blame for a number of books that have found their way into my home.

What to say about Nicole of Linus's Blanket? She is smart and witty, not to mention has an awesome blog. She reads a wide variety of books, from children's books to adult fiction and nonfiction. She's another source for my ever growing book addiction.

Historical Tapestry is a must visit blog for historical fiction lovers. The blog is a collaborative effort by several bloggers, some you may recognize: there's Alex from Le Canapé, Ana from Aneca's World, Kelly from The Written World, Marg from Reading Adventures, and Teddy Rose from So Many Precious Books, So Little Time. Each of these ladies bring their own unique style to the blog, making it one of my favorite historical fiction resources.

If you want to discover other great blogs, might I suggest your take a look at my blogroll in the sidebar? There are many terrific blogs there worth taking the time to check out.

Message to All Bloggers:

While I may be a little poorer financially, my book collection certainly is all the more richer thanks to all of you. I am a better reader, writer, thinker and person because of you. I have made many wonderful connections through blogging and from that friendships have grown. I am grateful to be a part of this community. Thank you for the dedication and hard work you put into your blogs. Thank you for letting me have a glimpse into your life and share in your passion for books.

BBAW: Book Giveaway #1

Each of the books in this giveaway have been read once and are in good condition. Both are hard cover copies. (Each title is linked to my review of the book if you want to read my take on it.)

Every day this week, I will be offering a new giveaway. Each giveaway will be open for one week, and so those late to the party will still have a chance to enter.

Sunday Salon: My Life in Book Titles

Guess how much I read this past week. Maybe half a page. I was that pathetic. With all the BBAW activities coming up this week, I have a feeling I will not be getting much reading done then either. And that's even being prepared ahead of time. So, today is a reading day. I will pry myself away from this computer, put off reading all your wonderful posts until later, and I am going to spend some much needed quality time with my books.

In the meantime, I thought I would take part in a little meme fun. I cannot remember where I first came upon this one, but it seems like everyone is doing it. If you haven't yet tried this one, please do!

Instructions: Using only books you have read this year (2009), cleverly answer these questions. Try not to repeat a book title.

Describe Yourself: No One You Know (Michelle Richmond)

How do you feel: Precious (Sandra Novack)

Describe where you currently live: A World I Never Made (James LePore)

If you could go anywhere, where would you go: In the Woods (Tana French)

Your favorite form of transport: Walking Through Walls (Philip Smith)

Your best friend is: The Woman in White (Wilkie Collins)

What’s the weather like: Shades of Grey (Clea Simon)

Favorite time of day: Prime Time (Hank Phillippi Ryan)

What is life to you: Sweeping Up Glass (Carolyn Wall)

Your fear: Dead and Gone (Charlaine Harris)

What is the best advice you have to give: Sometimes We're Always Real Same-Same (Mattox Roesch)

Thought for the Day: One More Year (Sana Krasikov)

How I would like to die: Defending Angels (Mary Stanton)

My soul’s present condition: The Weight of a Mustard Seed (Wendell Steavenson)

Review: Shades of Grey by Clea Simon

The cat on the middle step was washing its face, carefully licking its left paw and then running it over each ear in turn.

"Mr. Grey?" It made no sense. The cat kept washing, straining sideways now to get its tongue into the thick grey ruff.

Dulcie closed her eyes. The heat, grief, and these damned pantyhose. She was losing it. When she dared to look again, the cat was gone. [pg 3-4]

Shades of Grey by Clea Simon
Severn House, 2009
Crime Fiction; 216 pgs

Having read and enjoyed author Clea Simon's Theda Krakow series, I looked forward to trying her new series featuring Dulcie Schwartz, a doctoral student specializing in gothic literature at Harvard University. Besides, I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to meet a ghost cat, could I?

In order to help pay the bills, Dulcie has sublet her roommate's room in their apartment to another college student, a rather obnoxious man who likes the ladies. Dulcie isn't too fond of him, but she would never have wished him dead, which is exactly how she finds him one evening after a long day at work. He's been stabbed to death with her own knife. A cat that looks an awful lot like her former companion, Mr. Grey, tried to warn her not to enter the apartment, but Dulcie dismisses the voice in her head, and goes in anyway.

Besides finding herself a suspect in her roommate's murder, things aren't going so well at Dulcie's workplace either. Someone has been hacking into the computer system at the insurance company and suspicion seems to have fallen on Dulcie, whose temp position began not long before the trouble started. Dulcie cannot afford to lose her job, at least not before the school year starts and her grant kicks in.

As to that grant, she may lose that if she cannot come up with a thesis topic. She's drawing a blank and with the drama unfolding around her, is it any wonder? Could someone be trying to frame her for both crimes? Dulcie is not sure who to trust, even amongst her friends.

I took an instant liking to Dulcie. She lives and breathes gothic literature. And is it any wonder with a name like Dulcinea straight out of the gothic novel, Don Quixote? She is bookish and good-hearted. Some may find Dulcie’s penchant for day dreaming to be distracting, but I found it endearing (not to mention a little all to familiar). Dulcie was not the only character who won me over in Shades of Grey, and I look forward to discovering more about them in future books.

The author was very subtle in her handling of the supernatural element of the novel. While Mr. Grey is clearly a spirit, his few appearances in the novel are understated, and, as a result, come across as quite natural and believable. It suited the novel well.

There are several bookish references for the book lover within the pages of Shades of Grey. My favorite location in the novel was the Widener library. I would have loved to venture down into the lower floors of the library along with Dulcie, losing myself in the pages of an original copy of a gothic novel.

Shades of Grey was a pleasure to read. There’s plenty of mystery, a bit of thrill and even some romance. There was something about the tone--the atmosphere--that I found especially appealing. Perhaps a hint of that gothic flare coming out in Simon’s tale? It looks like I have a new series to add to my must read list.

Rating: * (Very Good)
