Sunday Post: Goals, Motivation, Movies, & My September TBR Poll Winner

The Sunday Post is hosted by the wonderful Kimba, the Caffeinated Book Reviewer, and gives us all a chance to recap our week, talk about what we are reading, share any new books that have come our way, and whatever else we want to talk about.

What I Am Reading: This weekend I finished reading Catherine McKenzie's thriller Fractured, my second book by the author. It kept me guessing right up to the end. I am about to start reading the winner of my September TBR List poll, which several of you voted in. Thank you for that!

What I Am Watching: I have begun watching The Lizzie Borden Chronicles. It was more on a whim than anything else. It's quite bloody, but quite addicting.  Have you seen it, by chance?

It was a big weekend for movies. My husband and I saw Sully. We both enjoyed it. I am an avid fan of Tom Hanks, and especially enjoyed his performance. We also went out as a family to see Kubo and the Two Strings, which I thought was very well done with a sad but beautiful story. Mouse wanted to see it again right after and was disappointed when we told her maybe another day. Instead, we came home and watched Frozen, which we haven't seen in quite a while. While Mouse loves the music from the movie, she's never really been all that interested in the movie itself.

New to My Shelves:
The Rest of Us Just Live Here by Patrick Ness (birthday gift)

What's Going On Off the Blog:  This is always a difficult time of year for me. This weekend brings the anniversary of my grandmother and father's deaths. I always try to fill it with busy-ness and fun activities. And this year was no different. Anjin surprised me by taking Friday off this past week, and so we went to see the movie Sully together. We went out for lunch also, just the two of us. But before that, he took me to the Cellar Door, our local independent bookstore, and let me pick out a book for my birthday. It was a nice date day. We started our Saturday with a soccer game. Mouse got her first goal! We celebrated with a movie and lunch, followed by ice cream at Farrell's Ice Cream Parlor and Restaurant. It made for a nice treat.

I am happy to say my husband's cousin is doing much better after his heart attack and surgery. He woke up from the medically induced coma this past Monday and was talking again on Tuesday. He even posted on Facebook about mid-week to let everyone know he was doing better. The family is very relieved, to say the least. Thank you for your prayers and well wishes.

As for Mouse and school, drops offs went much better this past week, fortunately. Mouse has even taken to telling her father when they arrive at school, "Okay, Dad. You can go now." She explained to him that if he left early, she wouldn't cry. Smart girl.

My husband packs my daughter a lunch every day and sends it off to school with her. Two days this past week, however, she took advantage of the school's hot lunches, unbeknownst to us. I was surprised she got away with it considering she did not have money or an account set up. I guess there is a two week grace period for getting accounts set up. We've since set up a lunch account and have money in it in case she decides she would rather have a hot lunch instead. I guess the lure of waffle sticks and pizza was too good to pass up.

Mouse and I are settling into a homework routine. She isn't too happy about it, but I try to make it fun for her. Our evenings are even more crowded than they were before. It's an adjustment, but we are adapting as best we can.

  • What have you been up to this past week?
  • What are you reading and watching? Is it anything you would recommend?
  • If you have children, what do/did you do to motivate your children to do their homework?

Every Friday Coffee Addicted Writer from Coffee Addicted Writer poses a question which participants respond on their own blogs within the week (Friday through Thursday). They then share their links at the main site and visit other participants blogs.

When you set a yearly reading goal, do you set it high to force yourself to meet that goal or do you keep it low and normally go over that goal any way? (submitted by Elizabeth)
My reading goals tend to be more along the line of what type of book I will read more of (by genre, or off my own shelves, or catch up on review books, for example) or which challenges I join. These I sometimes do yearly or randomly throughout the year. I don't always put my goals in writing. For the past three years I've set a Goodreads numeric goal just for the fun of it, but I tend to keep it reasonable to low.  Last year my goal was to read six books in a year. This year it's more realistic, less of a challenge and more of what I know I can read. For me, it's not about the numbers so much as it is about the quality of reading, including my enjoyment, and reading what I want to read at my own pace with no pressure. Otherwise, reading becomes a chore.

Do you set a numeric reading goal? If so, do you set it high or low or in between?

Thank you for voting in my September TBR List Poll!

My TBR List is a meme hosted by the awesome Michelle at Because Reading. It’s a fun way to choose a book from your TBR pile to read. The 1st Sunday of every month, I will list 3 books I am considering reading and take a poll as to which you think I should read. I will read the winner that month, and my review will follow. While I will attempt to post my review that same month, I make no promises--it may go up the following month.

It was not even close this month, not really. 55.9% (19) of you voted for the winner. Murder At the 42nd Street Library by Con Lehane received 26.5% (9) of the votes and 17.6% (6) of the votes went to Wishing Cross Station by February Grace.

The winner is:

The Invisible Library by Genevieve Cogman ~ The first in a series featuring a professional spy for the mysterious Library that collects fiction from different realities. Her latest assignment turns up missing before she can retrieve it.

I am excited to read The Invisible Library and will begin reading it shortly. Thank you again to all who voted!

I hope you all have a great week!

  1. I love it when a book keeps me guessing to the end. So glad to hear your husband's cousin is awake and doing better- that's awesome! Sometimes good things happen. My uncle's brother collapses in a restaurant a few years ago and they thought he had a brain aneurysm and wasn't expected to live- he made it and is fine today. You never know...

Hope you enjoy Invisible Library, I thought it was fun.

    1. Greg - I do too. I had my strong suspicions about how it would all turn out, but I was never completely sure until near the end.

We are all so happy my husband's cousin is recovering. Only a few more days in the hospital and he should be returning home. I am so glad your uncle's brother is doing well after his collapse.

Thank you for visiting, Greg! Have a great week.

  2. Oh, Mouse sounds like a cutie! Love her drop off strategy!

Sorry to hear it's a sad time for you. It's nearly the anniversary of my father's passing so I always get in a funk myself.

Have you seen the recent memes about NOT travelling anywhere with Tom Hanks, given the trials he's endured in some of his movies!?

Homework.. Sigh.. I was always such a nerd. My mom never had to tell me to make my homework.. It was already done before I got home. And I spend my time at home getting ahead and reading. I even miss those days at times.

Soccer game sounds like fun and ice cream is always good :)
Awww my son did the same thing when he was little. He'd tell me to just drop him off at school and please leave because if not, I'd make him cry. I cried driving home anyways...lol :(

  10. Sounds like you had quite the busy week! I'm glad your husband's cousin is on the mend-what a relief after that scare. It's so fun to hear about Kinder from the other perspective since I'm at school seeing these things unfold. Mouse is absolutely right, the sooner parents leave the better kids do with the separation. I can't say the same for parents, but we sacrifice for our kids right? Lol! And too funny about the hot lunch - I honestly think it's the novelty of going through the lunch line. Several of my lunch packers bought their lunch this week too.

  12. Homework can be such a production! Good for you for trying to make it fun. Whether or not homework is beneficial depends on the teacher, and some can make it sheer drudgery for both the child and the parent. Other teachers keep the homework light and worth the effort. My personal opinion is that the best homework is reading! :)

I am eager to read Fractured...I've enjoyed the author's previous books.

I've been addicted to Longmire on Netflix...and finished all the available seasons. A new one is coming on the 23rd. In the meantime, I started watching an Australian show called Offspring. About family, etc.

  17. You know, I always enjoy reading these posts, Wendy! You always have such great news -- bookish as well non-bookish -- to share! Thank you for that!! <3 :)

I saw the novel "Fractured" featured on "Waiting On Wednesday", at the blog Breaking The Spine. I don't usually read thrillers, since I'm a HUGE chicken! Lol. I sure hope you liked it!!

Hubby and I haven't actually gone out to the movies in quite some time. He has a bad back, so he can't sit for hours in the seats at the movie theater. However, perhaps I can persuade him to go to a movie theater in our area that has very comfortable seats, and serves food (REAL food, not popcorn and snacks, although they have those, too) and drinks -- including wine -- right along with the movie! They actually serve you right in the theater. The place is called "Cine Bistro", and is located at The Dolphin Mall, here in Miami. We haven't been there in a loooong time. i used to LOVE that mall, mostly because there used to be a Borders store located there. Since the demise of that bookstore, I have lost interest in going to this mall. Lol. I had been hoping that Barnes & Noble would open up a store at the same location, but that didn't happen.....

I am so sorry that this weekend brings up sad memories for you....and this particular weekend, there's the 9/11 anniversary, too.... So it's just WONDERFUL that you've filled it up with FUN activities! Your husband is SO sweet, too, taking you to The Cellar Door and giving you a book as a birthday present!!! He gets the Husband of the Year Award!! Lol. HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU!!!! <3 :) I sure hope you enjoy reading "The Rest of Us Just Live Here"!!

I'm so glad that Mouse got her first soccer goal, too!! CONGRATS TO HER!!!! WOOT, WOOT!!! And she is indeed a smart girl, telling her Dad to go ahead and drop her off at school quickly, so she won't cry. How adorable.... :)

If I had had kids myself, I would have made sure to make homework as much fun as possible, too. This is the best way to instill a lifelong love of learning and studying in kids!

How WONDERFUL that your husband's cousin is recovering!! Thank God!!! He must be feeling SO thankful, as well as proud, that his son was able to act so quickly and decisively. AWESOME!!

In regards to your Book Blogger Hop answer, I'm glad you set realistic reading goals on Goodreads. As you know from my own answer to this question, I don't set ANY yearly reading goals! No pressure for me, lol. BTW, I've decided to drop out of that TBR Reading Challenge I've been "participating" in, lol. I'm way behind...besides, the blog that's hosting this challenge has not been updating on a regular basis. So....sayonara! I don't know why I even bothered to join up in the first place. I joined it last year, too, and never finished then, either! Lol.

I love it that you think quality is more important than numbers! ABSOLUTELY!!! That's the right idea!

It's GREAT to see that the overwhelming majority of your readers picked "The Invisible Library"!!!! YAAAAAY!!!!! :) I want to read this book myself!! I LOVE books about books, and this one has spies in the plot, too!! Sounds SO AMAZING!! I sure hope it turns out to be as good as it sounds, and that you'll LOVE it!!!!

Thanks for sharing all of your GREAT news, Wendy!! Thanks as well for visiting and commenting on my own BBH post!! I'm wishing you, Mouse, and hubby a WONDERFUL week ahead!! <3 :)

    1. Maria - Thank you. You are too kind, Maria. I did enjoy Fractured. As far as thrillers go, it was suspenseful, but not frightening.

My husband and I used to go to the movies a lot before Mouse was born. She's only now starting to like going from time to time. Of course, the type of movies we see are limited. Hubby and I so rarely get to go out just the two of us and so it was a real treat to get to see the movie together on my birthday like we did. I sometimes go to the movies by myself, but not a lot. The theater we go to most often these days serves alcohol too (although we don't drink) and serves food in your seat. It's more expensive to get food that way, so we generally get it at the concession stand if we buy food at all. I think more theaters are taking that route to attract customers. Staying home and watching a movie in the comfort of your own home is too appealing to most.

Thank you for the birthday wishes! My family made it an extra special day. :-)

It's hard when the challenge host isn't even participating much in her own challenge. I tried hosting a challenge once and I know how hard it is. It sounds like you made a good choice to drop out of the TBR Challenge. It's no fun when it makes reading feel more like a chore--or you feel like you're failing because you aren't meeting your goals.

I like books about books too. :-) So far The Invisible Library is good. Hopefully it will stay that way.

I hope you and your husband are having a wonderful week as well. Thanks for visiting, Maria!

  18. So glad to hear good news about your husband's cousin. What a relief, right? That son of his - quite a guy. Hope you enjoy The Invisible Library. I haven't read it, but had heard good things, so that's where my vote went. I understand about having sad times of year. For some reason, my family tends to leave this life around national holidays. Sounds kind of funny and it is a bit, but Thanksgiving will always be the day my Dad died, no matter what actual day it falls on. Hugs to you. Glad you got a Date Day. Give your cutie girl a hug for me. So, my girl used to only like pizza and hamburgers on the school lunch menu. We'd get the menu and she'd mark those days. Otherwise, she always (and I mean always) took a turkey and swiss sandwich. Always. I got so tired of buying turkey and swiss. LOL

Isn't it interesting how family deaths tend to follow a pattern? My dad's relatives always seemed to die around Good Friday. I used to love my birthday, but now it is always mixed with sadness because of the anniversaries of my grandmother and father's deaths.

I'll give Mouse a hug for you. She loves hugs. :-) Mouse told me I had better be sure and tell her when it's a pizza or waffle sticks day. Haha I think she might like pancake day too.

I adore Tom Hanks, and after watching Turner & Hooch this summer (a toddlerhood favorite of mine, thanks Dad!) it brought into perspective his acting career and how far he's come.

    1. I don't think I ever saw the entire Turner and Hooch. I've seen just about all his other movies though. I think Splash was my first of his I ever saw. He really has come a long way from where he started. And he seems like such a nice guy, you know? I really admire him.

Thanks for visiting, Charlie! I hope you are enjoying your week.
