Where is Your Bookmark? (08/06/2013)

I woke up this morning to a wall of fog outside my windows.  Thirty minutes before my alarm went off, I was awakened by my cat, plucking at the sheet covering me.  I pet him and rolled over, hoping he would leave me alone.  No such luck.  He kept me company while I got ready for the day, mewing all the while.  I gave him extra pets, cuddled him and gave him his breakfast (which he promptly ignored).  My husband and Mouse were sleeping soundly as I left for work.  A typical morning in my life.

Joseph Finder's Paranoia has been keeping me company on my drive to work in the mornings.  It isn't quite as thrilling as I expected, but, even so, I am enjoying the book and anxious to see how it ends.  I do wish Adam, the protagonist, would listen more to his father.  As angry and bitter as the old man may seem, he really does know what he's talking about.  Adam is in far over his head, trying to play the business espionage game.

I finished Orphan Train by Christina Baker Kline and am in the process of writing my review.  You can expect that to go up Thursday.  I am focusing my efforts on finishing Highlander Unchained by Monica McCarty now.  I have not decided if I want to start another book until I do.  It really is more a case of my not knowing what to read next.  I have a Kindle and Nook full of books, not to mention all the print books on my shelves, to choose from.  Trying to figure out what kind of reading mood I am in should not be this hard.  Do I want something heavy and serious?  Something with magic?  Or perhaps a mystery?  Maybe I want something light and funny.  Decisions, decisions.

What are you reading right now?  Is it something you would recommend?

Every Tuesday Diane from Bibliophile By the Sea hosts
First Chapter First Paragraph Tuesday Intros, where
participants share the first paragraph (or a few) of a
book they are reading or thinking about reading soon.

Highlander Unchained is the final book in the MacLeod trilogy by Monica McCarty (each book in the series is a stand alone).  I feel like I have been reading it forever.  But then, it isn't like I was not reading other books at the same time. These books are a bit outside my comfort zone in terms of what I generally like to read, but they have kept me entertained.  In this particular book, a young woman, Flora MacLeod, is kidnapped by a Highlander desperate to save his castle and people.  Getting Flora to marry him by her own choice is imperative.  Only, she's as stubborn as can be and not exactly inclined to agree to marry the man who would take her prisoner--or so she thinks.  So far there's been adventure, a curse, and a few close calls . . .
On a cold winter's day nearly a hundred years gone past, a curse was born . . .
Lady Elizabeth Campbell Maclean wouldn't beg.  Not for his love, and not for her life.  But she was scared. More scared than she'd ever been in her preciously short life.  Six and twenty was far too young to die.

Would you continue reading?

    1. Kathy - That sounds yummy! :-) I am glad you are enjoying the book. It's nice when a book hits just the right spot, isn't it? I've had a few of those lately.

    1. Pat - The trilogy isn't much of a trilogy, other than the fact that it features different members of the same family. Each book reads as a stand alone, so you'd be safe starting with any one of the three.

I hope you have a great week too too!

  5. I hate when I can't decide on which book to read next. My current read was going a bit slow for me so I set it aside and picked up Echoes at Dawn by Maya Banks. It has me hooked so I haven't been able to set it down hardly. I hope you enjoy whatever you choose to read next!

    1. Samantha - It can be very frustrating, especially when I'm itching to read something. There's always Dinosaurs Love Underpants, Mouse's latest favorite. I think I've read that book fifty times in the last five days.

I am glad you found something to hook you!

  6. Ah, you and Ti and your cold weather! Every day is 95 here. Anyway I am making my way through the absolutely delicious Night Film in print, and listening to a summer teenage sex romp (seriously I am but it is fun) called Crash on audio. I can sympathize with the cat morning routine. I have one that pokes my face when I am sleeping until I scratch his head.

    1. Sandy - I am not so sure I'd go so far as to say we're having cold weather exactly. It's been in the nineties here during the day. :-) The mornings have been cool though, with a little chill in the air which is nice. I'm just glad the temps haven't been in the hundreds, frankly.

Cats can be so funny--just now when we would rather be sleeping.

  7. The cool mornings 55 degrees when I left for work was such a treat. I actually am walking everyday now with coworkers from 10:30-11:00.

I'm not a Highlander fan, but Enjoy and thanks for joining us today.

    1. Diane - It sounds like you've been enjoying good weather too, Diane. I really should go out walking during my breaks while I can. Who knows when the heat will come back.

I'm not a huge Highlander fan either, although I do seem to be reading a lot of those types of books lately . . .

  12. Is your cat okay or was it the typical attention thing they do? Choosing shouldn't be hard but yes, it is, so often! Too many books, too little time (because we're indecisive!)

I'd continue reading because there's a castle in the premise, though I'd probably stop a little further on to find out about the rest of the series.

    1. Charlie - Parker often wakes me up like that, so that's nothing new. His mewing as I get ready isn't so much and I think he is doing it for attention. Ever since he lost his companions, he's been seeking out attention much more--and being more vocal about it. :-( I've been going home for lunch to check on him and he's always right there, wanting some loving. It makes it hard to go back to work after my time is up.

  13. Your Highlander books sounds amazing!!! I just finished Chocolat! It took me almost 10 days because I started another part-time job and it's seriously cramping my reading time!! LOL!! Not sure what I'm going to pick to read next...probably a Jill Shalvis or Kristan Higgins book..no surprise there!! LOL!
