Sunday Post: Catching Up & Doing Things Backwards

It is time for Nuts and Bolts, hot cocoa, and curling up on the couch under an afghan in front of the fireplace and enjoying a cupcake my daughter made. I thought maybe I would spend a little time with you as well.

New to My Shelves: I splurged on a few e-books this past week, deciding to use a fraction of my hoarded Amazon gift cards. I especially wanted to get earlier books in series for which I have later books.
Talon (Talon #1) by Julie Kagawa

The Obsession by Nora Roberts

Flight From Death (Fly by Night #1) by Yasmine Galenorn

Autumn Thorns (Whisper Hollow #1) by Yasmine Galenorn

City of Light (Outcast #1) by Keri Arthur

Half-Resurrection Blues (Bone Street Rumba #2) by Daniel José Older

Midnight Taxi Tango (Bone Street Rumba #2) by Daniel José Older

Have you read any of these? If so, what did you think?

What I Am Reading: The purpose of the TBR List Poll is to have you help me choose at least one of my  reads in any given month, and normally I am good about starting with the winning book before I start any of the runner ups. I seem to have started with the one that got the least amount of votes  this time though. I blame those two days in a row I forgot to bring my book to work and had to settle for reading on my Kindle during my lunch break. I immediately went to Lazaretto by Diane McKinney-Whetstone, which I am nearly finished with. Set in post-Civil war Philadelphia, after Lincoln's assassination, the novel spans over many years, following the lives of several different characters. I am enjoying it so far.

The Unit by Ninni Holmqvist has kind of fell by the wayside for the time being. I'm sure I will get back to it, but Lazaretto is my go to book right now. I hope to start the actual winner of my November TBR List Poll, Nicola Yoon's The Sun is Also a Star in the next day or so.

What I Am Listening To: It just so happens I have a print and audio copy of the second runner up in my November TBR poll and being that I was ready to start a new audio book, Nicole Dennis-Denn's Here Comes the Sun instantly came to mind. This is my first audiobook narrated by Bahni Turpin, and so far I think she's amazing. So is Here Comes the Sun. I do not know how much listening I will get to do this next week since I am home on vacation for the holiday, but maybe I will get to sneak in a chapter here and there.

What I Am Watching: Mouse and I went to see the movie Trolls on Veteran's Day, and enjoyed it. I loved the music and the movie's message is very uplifting. Kind of something I needed right about now. I am enjoying the television show Timeless a bit more after a couple of really good episodes, one featuring Lincoln's assassination and the other set around the time of Nixon's scandal. I am caught up on The Walking Dead, but admit I am not feeling it as much this season so far. We'll see. I read an article on Facebook the other day about a theory that Daryl was using eye blinks to signal Rick during last week's episode.  Wouldn't that be something?

I really want to see Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them while it is in the theater. I am not sure that will be possible, but I will do my best to make it happen.

What's Going On Off the Blog: Work, work and more work. I attended a training last week put on by a human trafficking survivor. It was very interesting, I thought. I am very close to having the holiday scheduling done for the center. It is very time consuming, especially as I try to accommodate everyone's vacation requests all the while ensuring we have adequate coverage 24/7. I also have been putting together this next year's calendar. It is tedious, but necessary work.

Mouse's last soccer game was last weekend, and her team's pizza party was Saturday. She received her very first trophy, which she came home and put on display on one of the bookshelves. Our Girl Scouts meeting on Monday was unfortunately cancelled. Both myself and my other co-leader were feeling under the weather and decided to put it off until after Thanksgiving. GirlDerness was this past weekend, and the girls who were able to attend had a blast. We got to go hiking, learn First Aid, sing songs, and do arts and crafts. It was a full day.

Do you remember the woman at my daughter's after school program I praised so highly? Her last day was Monday. I am so sad to see her go. She got a better job offer elsewhere, and so I can't blame her. Hopefully her replacement will be just as wonderful. I confess I'm not completely smitten with the person whose standing in for her right now. It was very telling this week when I went to pick Mouse up and she gave all the subbing staff hugs goodbye, but shouted out a goodbye to the regular guy only when I reminded her as we were walking out the door. He doesn't seem inappropriate at all--I don't mean to imply that. I'm sure he's very capable and good with the children. Maybe he'll grow on us.

What I Am Thinking About: My Christmas letter. I wrote a rough draft and am waiting for my husband's feedback. I still am not sure I will send it out. I am trying to find the right balance given my overall state of mind right now, which isn't exactly hopeful. I am also thinking about how I wish the cooler weather meant rain would come with it, but no such luck.

What I Am Enjoying: The start of my vacation. A much needed vacation at that. I am also enjoying a lazy weekend--our first with no scheduled activities. I really need to clean the house . . .

How I Am Feeling: I am still coughing. I ended up taking a day off of work because the coughing was so bad. It's better now. Not keeping me up at night anyway. I also am feeling a little better about my blogging again. I had a chance to schedule some of my review posts for the upcoming weeks and prepare skeleton posts. Hopefully I can find time to visit everyone's blogs--that's my biggest regret right now. I don't mind the impromptu blogging breaks, but I do feel bad that I haven't even been by to say hi to many of you who have taken the time to leave me a comment or two.

What I Am Planning and Looking Forward to: I need to get more of my Christmas shopping done. We're planning a quiet Thanksgiving just the three of us this year, but have invited everyone here again for Christmas. It's just easier for us to have it here at our house with hour work schedules. My photo Christmas cards should be coming in the mail this next week and I will need to get those addressed and ready to mail. I just remembered that I need to get stamps!

This Tuesday I will be attending the service for one of my employee's whose mother passed away this past week. I want to offer her my support. Mouse will be coming with me since we have the week off. I plan to take her coloring journal and some extra paper with us to keep her occupied.

Tell me about what you have been up to! What are you reading, listening to and watching? How was your week? Do you have anything planned for this coming week?

Whatever you do, I hope those of you in the U.S. have a wonderful Thanksgiving Holiday. If you plan to join the throngs of shoppers on Black Friday, I wish you the best of luck and may everyone be kind and neighborly.  And for the rest of you, I wish you a great week as well.

Every Friday Coffee Addicted Writer from Coffee Addicted Writer poses a question which participants respond on their own blogs within the week (Friday through Thursday). They then share their links at the main site and visit other participants blogs.

Would you take a book with you when you go to your family's Thanksgiving gathering/dinner?
Absolutely. Of course, I rarely go anywhere without a book (or at least my e-reader--and I always have my phone with me). Growing up, I often would sneak off to read while the grown-ups would talk or cook. A common refrain from my father was that I should come out and join the family more. Being that my brother and I were the only children in the family, however, reading was much more preferable than fighting with my brother or pretending to care about adult conversation. As an adult, I'm not really supposed to do that anymore, I suppose--sneak away and read, I mean. And I would be lying if I said I didn't sometimes do just that. I tend to dread family gatherings more than I welcome them, sad to say.

What about you? Do you take a book with you for family gatherings like Thanksgiving or Christmas?

  1. Those new additions look nice, especially Flight from Death and City of Light. Looks like some urban fantasy goodness. :) And it is getting to be that time of year for hot cocoa. It got snowy here today so I'll be definitely buying some of that.

I watched the last episode of Walking dead alst night and after hearing about the Morse code theory and then watching it, it looks plausible. Especially with that big Morse code chart in Rick's place! But I'm with you, this season ugh. The show just moves too slow, they split up and give entire episodes to only some members at times, and Negan just talks and talks. lol This show needs a shot of adrenaline. I love th characters but man they're not DOING anything.

Hope you feel better, and have a fabulous Thanksgiving!

    1. Greg - I can't wait to give them all a try. It feels like too long since I last indulged in urban fantasy.

Yes, The Walking Dead is moving so slow right now, and I'm sure that's a big part of why I'm not enjoying it as much. You are so right about Negan. I wish he didn't talk so much. LOL

I hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving too, Greg. Thanks for visiting.

  6. Ooo... Talon looks fabulous - I need to get that one! I've The Obsession and really enjoyed it, a solidly good whodunit. Glad you enjoyed Trolls - I went to see Fantastic Beasts on Friday and loved it - I'll be reviewing it tomorrow. In the meantime, have a great Thanksgiving:)

Thank you for the Thanksgiving wishes. I hope you have a wonderful week, Sarah! Thanks for visiting.

  8. Lazaretto sounds interesting and I can't wait to read The Sun is Also a Star. I just got it from the library and hope to get to it soon. I watched Fantastic Beasts and I liked it. I thought it was funny that a Trolls movie was being made (my sister and I loved them as kids and she even had a Troll themed birthday party) but I'm glad to hear the movie has a good message.

Congratulations to Mouse on her trophy. I hope you are feeling better and have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

I hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving too! Thanks for stopping by, Christina.

  9. I also bought Talon awhile back. I liked Kagawa's Iron Fey series so I want to give this a try as well. I'm glad Trolls was uplifting. I want to see that. I think I may go watch it again too if it stays in the theater long enough. I hope you have a great week, Nicole! Thanks for stopping by. :-)

  12. Nice post, so informative about what you are up to, and I was happy to read it :)

I read and enjoyed only The Obsession out of your chosen books, because I haven't been reading UF lately but I'm aware of good buzz for Talon series.

We're just going to be 3 for Thanksgiving (son has invite for day after Thanksgiving to spend 3 day weekend with relatives while he's on East coast, a bit sad he'll be alone on this family-oriented day), and it's been quiet for us this week for that and remembering those who've passed, but I'm going to go the whole route of a traditional home-cooked meal here anyway... and watch the Macy's Day parade, then the dog show following it while cooking.

If I don't chat with you before Thursday, have a wonderful, relaxing time with your family for Thanksgiving :)

I've been wanting to get back into urban fantasy--not that I stay away from it all that long--but it seems like it hasn't been high on my priority list as of late. I've never read anything by Kagawa, but her books seem to be well liked.

Your Thanksgiving sounds like ours--just us three too (five if you count the cats). We'll likely go out though, rather than eat in. It works for us.

  16. I hear you about not being able to visit blogs. I'm getting some posts up but keeping up like I used to just isn't happening. Still can't give it up, just need to accept my life is different. I am only 12,000 words into my novel. That's right. I need 38,000 more words by Nov. 30! I really should not be reading any blogs, I should be cranking out chapters! I always have worked better under a deadline :) I hope you have a great Thanksgiving. 17. I'm back! We certainly did enjoy "Santa's Enchanted Forest"!! This is the second time we go this year, since we got season passes. As I mentioned before, this is an annual amusement park that opens here in Miami, every year. The company that brings it here sets everything up on a long strip right by the Palmetto expressway, on SW 40th Street, which is also known as "Bird Road". The strip is part of a bigger park, which is called Tropical Park.

This year, "Santa's" opened to the public on Nov. 3rd. It will close on Jan. 8th. The daily hours are 5:00 PM to midnight.

This place makes feel like a kid again!! There are LOTS of lights strung on many trees throughout the park. As you stroll in, past the beautiful gate, you can also see Christmas "vignettes" or scenarios, to the left and right of the main thoroughfare. There are lots of food stands, too, serving pizza, shishkabobs, Philly steak subs, Cuban food, Greek food, you name it! At the very back, there are many rides, but we only go on the Ferris Wheel. All the other rides will definitely make us throw up! Lol.

They also have a sea lion show which is very cute, as well as a show with circus acrobats. So far, we've missed that one. But we did get to see the sea lion show last night (it's nearly 1:30 AM now.)

I've never posted about this on my blog before, but I think I'll do so this year. I took LOTS of pictures, so I'd like to show them off!!

This place just makes me SO VERY happy!!!! I know Mouse would LOVE it!!! :)

    More coming.....

Santa's Village opened back up this year in the nearby mountains, and I am hoping we can find time to go. I think it would be fun. It'd be especially fun if there was some snow--although not so much we would need chains to drive.

  19. WOW, you sure got some GREAT ebooks! I'm going to check them all out! And I happen to be reading a Nora Roberts book right now, titled "The Christmas Wish", which I highly recommend! It's really two books in one. LOVE it!!

How funny that you ended up reading one of your runner-ups! But I do hope you get to "The Sun Is Also A Star", as that one sounds TERRIFIC!! I want to read it myself!

How nice that you and Mouse saw the movie "Trolls"! I haven't heard of it, so must find out more, but it sounds like something I'd probably love.

I'm SO eager to see "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them"!!! I ADORE J.K. Rowling's magical world! Hopefully I'll get to see it in a theater, too.

Sounds like you're swamped at work. Hope your vacation, plus the upcoming holiday will be restful for you! Well, as you commented on my blog, you won't have to cook, right?

So Mouse got her first soccer trophy? AWESOME!! CONGRATS TO HER!!! WOOT, WOOT!! Tell her that your blogger friend Maria in Miami sends her heartfelt congrats!! <3 :)

It's too bad that the lady who was in charge of the after-school care is leaving....but, as you say you can't blame her, if she got a better offer elsewhere. Sure hope that whoever replaces her is just as good!

SO glad the "GirlDerness" experience was such a success!! I'll bet all the girls had a LOT of fun!

Sorry to hear you've been under the weather. Hope you get better soon, just in time for the Big Turkey Day!! Gobble, gobble!! <3 :) BTW, have you heard of an immune booster product named "Airborne"? A teacher friend told me about it. In fact, it was formulated by a teacher, would you believe? it comes in two forms -- one is a chewable tablet, and the other is a big round tablet that looks llike an Alka-Seltzer, and which you drop in water. It will then dissolve. I much prefer this version, as the chewable tablets are hard on my stomach.

    More coming! :) :) :)

We ended up seeing Fantastic Beasts this weekend and loved it. It's really good and I think you will like it too.

I'm getting texts from work today . . . I am not answering back. They can wait until Monday when I return to the office. The questions are not time sensitive, otherwise I would go ahead and answer.

Thank you for the well wishes. I have used Airborne before, but haven't noticed much difference with it.

  20. And now to your Book Blogger Hop question! From what I've seen on other blogs, it sure looks like most of us book lovers do take books with us to our family Thanksgiving celebrations! That's because we tend to take books everywhere we go. Some of us, like me, prefer to take printed books. But even if we take ebooks, hey, it's really comforting to know we have something interesting to read, readily available in our purses, should the need arise. (No pun intended, I swear! Lol.) And, should the need arise, we just whip the book, or phone, or Kindle right out! And if not, well, as one blogger put it, it's just a comfort to know that you have a book (or books) with you!

As you have pointed out, another reason most of us bookworms would carry a book with us to Thanksgiving gatherings is that these gatherings can indeed be uncomfortable. A lot of families are not only made up of a nuclear family, but include lots of nephews, nieces, cousins, brothers and sisters-in-law, and on and on....Who can blame a bookworm for sneaking off with a book, due to feeling overwhelmed? Lol. We have a small family, so I have no excuse, haha! And this year, it will just be the three of you for Thanksgiving! Very cozy and nice, right?

Thanks so much for sharing all of your "mews"! A VERY Happy Thanksgiving to you, the Mouse and hubby, as well as your beloved kitties!! And thanks for visiting my blog and commenting on my BBH post!! <3 :)
