Sunday Post: June TBR Poll Winner, New Books & Lazy Days

The Sunday Post is hosted by the wonderful Kimba, the Caffeinated Book Reviewer, and gives us all a chance to recap our week, talk about what we are reading, share any new books that have come our way, and whatever else we want to talk about.

It has been a lazy weekend. June Gloom hovered over our Saturday, but Mouse was able to run through the sprinklers and play with her sand table. We also put together some puzzles and practiced for Mouse's play.

Saturday evening we heard some commotion outside, and when we looked out the window, there was a horse and a carriage. Mouse went outside for a closer look and was invited for a ride along with the neighbor children. She crashed their party for a little while and got to jump in a jumper in their backyard too. It was a nice way to cap off the day.

How was your week? Do you have any Sunday plans?

Are giveaways a part of your blog or only reviews? (submitted by Elizabeth
It isn't often I have a giveaway on my blog anymore, although I used to do it with some regularity. Between it being time consuming and not exactly cheap, I have cut way back in recent years. I also do not host giveaways often for publishers or authors like I used to. Most are only open to readers in the U.S.A. and Canada. I feel it unfair to leave out those living outside of those two countries, although I understand why it is necessary on the publisher's part. I used to make a habit of hosting an international giveaway alongside the publisher's to make it open to everyone. It just got to be too much. Occasionally I offer a giveaway for a book of the winner's choice or a gift card. I'm more likely to give away books I read to random commenters now and then. Although it's become less common since most of the books I read are e-books. Nowadays, I mostly just write about the books I am reading, with occasional off-topic talk.

Do you offer giveaways on your blog? Do you participate in many?

In the Mail This Week:  My Lit Box package arrived in the mail on Tuesday and was a nice surprise. I have yet to read anything by Louise Edrich, and LaRose sounds like it will be good--and heart-wrenching. The bookmark is made of wood and is quite beautiful, don't you think?

I also received a copy of Susan Spann's The Ninja's Daughter from the publisher for an upcoming book tour in August.

What I Am Reading: I currently am reading Stephen P. Kiernan's The Hummingbird for an upcoming tour. Before that, I read Karen Rock's contemporary romance Under An Adirondack Sky.

What I Am Watching: After reading Neil Gaiman's Neverwhere, I was interested in checking out the BBC miniseries that the book is based on. It's a fairly quick watch--especially if you binge watch the show. It's six episodes, each a half hour long. We watched the animated movie Home this weekend, and enjoyed it. And we have also been watching Strawberry Shortcake. A lot.

What's Going On Off the Blog: We celebrated my husband's birthday earlier this week. Mouse picked out the cake, a candy cake--candy on the outside with chocolate cake on the inside. It was quite good, but way too rich. It's one of those "glad I did it once, but probably never gain" experiences.

The birthday boy got sick later in the week, unfortunately. He's still recovering. My daughter seems to be coming down with something now too. I hope I am able to avoid it--but what are the chances of that?

We found out this past week that my mother-in-law may have a heart attack without even realizing it. She suffers from Multiple Sclerosis and went in for a routine stress test this past week. She's scheduled for an angiogram later this coming Wednesday. It came as a surprise to all of us. We are hopeful that if the doctor finds anything, he will be able to treat it.

One of my roses

This Past Week In Reading Mews:

Thank you for helping me choose my next read from my TBR collection:

My TBR List is a meme hosted by the awesome Michelle at Because Reading. It’s a fun way to choose a book from your TBR pile to read. The 1st Sunday of every month, I will list 3 books I am considering reading and take a poll as to which you think I should read. I will read the winner that month, and my review will follow. While I will attempt to post my review that same month, I make no promises--it may go up the following month.

The winner of my May TBR List Poll is:

The Magician's Lie by Greer Macallister

This week's poll was close. The winner won by 2 votes (48.4%, 15 votes), with Admiral by Sean Danker (41.9%, 13 votes) coming in second. I am afraid Within a Captain's Hold by Lisa A. Olech getting very few votes (9.7, 3 votes).

I hope you all have a great week! Happy Reading!

  1. Happy Sunday! It's been kind of a lazy day here too, although we did have some sun. Summer is here!

I don't do giveaways much anymore either, I did a few early on in my blog but not so much anymore.

Sorry to hear about your mother in law, thoughts and prayers that she'll be okay.

    1. Greg - Happy Sunday to you too! I half expected it to rain this weekend, but so far it's been pretty dry. Just very cloudy.

Thank you for the thoughts and prayers for my mother-in-law. Hopefully the news will be good after the further testing this coming week.

Thanks for visiting, Greg, and for your comment. Have a great week.

Great though that Mouse got to join in the neighbour's party and nice that they were welcoming!

  4. Wow, that cake sounds really sweet. The Ninja's Daughter looks good, and yeah for Mouse for getting a ride in the horse and carriage. Despite the illness it sounds like a good week at your house. Enjoy the rest of your weekend!

    1. Kim - Neither my husband or I could eat all the candy on our slices. It was too sweet, really.

I'm looking forward to The Ninja's Daughter. I haven't read a mystery set in that time period and setting.

It was a good week overall, thank goodness. My husband seems to have got the worst of it. He was laid up in bed a couple days and is still feeling pretty awful.

Thanks for dropping in adn I hope you have a great rest of the weekend too.

  5. Oh man, I remember running through sprinklers as a kid lol. And how awesome that she got to go on a random carriage ride!

That lit box looks so pretty. And I think I might actually use bookmarks if I had one that looked like that! I've never had a wooden bookmark, that's so cool.

I think I'd feel the same about a cake like that. I actually have never had a huge sweet tooth.

Good luck to your mother-in-law with her tests, stay well, and have a great week!

    1. Kristen - She loves playing in the water. :-) The carriage ride was a nice surprise. I am glad the neighbor's invited her to take a ride in it. A little princess's dream.

This was my second Lit Box from Sanura, and I couldn't be happier. Now to make time to read the books!

I'm so glad we just got a small cake. It was big enough for each of us to have a slice and one left over to give to my daughter's teacher (who jokingly said she wanted us to save her a piece). Was she ever surprised. Haha

Thank you so much for the well wishes for my mother-in-law. It's quite scary to think she could have had a heart attack and even more so without anyone noticing!

Thank you for stopping by, and I hope you have a good week too!

And thank you for the well wishes for my mother-in-law. There's talk of possibly putting in a stint, which her own mother had lived with for a number of years. We should know more on Wednesday.

I wouldn't have minded riding in the carriage either. :-) I'm glad Mouse was able to.

  21. I can certainly understand why you no longer hold giveaways, Wendy! Yes, they can get expensive, unless, of course, you have the ones that are part of blog tours. Those are really hosted by the tour companies that are promoting the books.

As for international giveaways, I usually had those, but now I've discovered that you have to pay an extra tax to have books shipped to certain countries. Therefore, I will have to limit my giveaways to the US and Canada. I regret doing this, but just don't want to have to pay that extra tax.

I LOVE that horse and carriage!! How lucky for Mouse that she was able to get a rid in the carriage! And she also crashed the birthday party! COOL!!!

I'm so sorry about your mother-in-law....I hope her health improves! How sad that she suffers from MS, but I also hope that it's under control.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY to your hubby, and I hope he recovers soon! I also hope you and Mouse don't catch what he's recovering from!

I thought for sure your readers would pick that pirate book for you to read. That was the one I picked. Just couldn't resist that sexy guy on the cover! Lol.

I hope you and your family have a WONDERFUL week!! Happy Reading!!

Thanks for visiting and commenting on my BBH post!! <3 :)

    1. Maria - Yes, I've done the publisher hosted ones, but then always ran my own alongside it to ensure my international readers could get a chance to win too. More often than not, publishers aren't able to ship their books outside of the U.S. and Canada. I haven't come across many publishers who are willing to ship overseas. And I'd rather not have a giveaway at all if it's not open to everyone, regardless of country.

I'm not familiar with an extra tax to ship books overseas. I know postage can be rather steep by itself. I usually go with a company like Book Depository if giving away a book to someone overseas that I don't have on hand. They have free shipping to many different countries.

It was really nice of the neighbors to include Mouse. :-) She'd gone outside just to see the horse and carriage since it was right there in front of our house. We didn't expect they'd offer her a ride!

My mother-in-law is a very strong woman. She's had some set backs in recent years, but she's holding her own. Hopefully everything will go well on Wednesday.

Thank you for the birthday wishes for my husband. :-) And now he has this coming Sunday to look forward to--Father's Day. :-)

I'm still looking forward to reading the pirate book even though it didn't win. :-)

  31. I also had a horse drawn buggy march down my street recently- but my dogs freaked out (they're unused to horses in the city), so I wasn't invited on for a ride. I bet Mouse loved it!
I've read The Roundhouse by Louise Erdrich, which is well written but a bit sad- I kind of like happier stories, even for historical fiction. As for giveaways, I do one a year, and I think it's plenty- this year was a bit sparse on entries, so I don't think that's the reason people visit my blog. ;)
I hope your mother-in-law gets better, especially if she has something amiss with her heart- MS isn't nice to have, either. I seem to know too many people who suffer from it. I also hope the mystery bug left your house without affecting you, though stuff like that seems to linger.
