I was going through a lot of deaths of friends and families last year and I just couldn't put myself through it. I heard an interview with the author where he talked about looking at his young son and being inspired to write the book. In hindsight, it is not a beach read of any sort. But there is something about the starkness of the post-apocalyptic world McCarthy envisions which I've never been able to shake, even with the glimmer of hope at the end. It's one of the few books which has stayed with me so vividly for so long.
