The Witchfinder's Sister by Beth Underdown

A review copy from the author for an upcoming book tour:

WTF: Poems by Laura Foley

March In Review: I decided to make up for February by reading a few extra books in March. Admittedly, some were very short--novella short. As can see from the below list, I went on a reading binge, reading several of Juliette Cross's books back to back. I was looking for something short with fantasy and romance elements and the Nightwing trilogy jumped out at me. I only expected to read one of her books but suddenly found myself not quite ready to leave that world.

Solely For Me:
  • Yes Please by Amy Poehler (Audio, Nonfiction/Memoir)
  • Read to Death by Terri Farley Moran (Cozy Mystery)
  • The Book Club Murders by Leslie Nagel (Cozy Mystery)
  • The Life We Bury by Allen Eskens (Crime Fiction)
  • Soulfire (Nightwing #1) by Juliette Cross (Urban Fantasy/Romance)
  • Windburn (Nightwing #2) by Juliette Cross (Urban Fantasy/Romance)
  • Nightbloom (Nightwing #3) by Juliette Cross (Urban Fantasy/Romance)
  • Dragon Heartstrings (Vale of Stars #0.5) by Juliette Cross (Urban Fantasy/Romance)
  • Waking the Dragon (Vale of Stars #1) by Juliette Cross (Urban Fantasy/Romance)
  • Dragon in the Blood (Vale of Stars #2) by Juliette Cross (Urban Fantasy/Romance)

Some of the Books I Read With My Daughter (many of which we read over and over and over again. And then again):
  • How to Catch the Tooth Fairy by Adam Wallace and illustrated by Andy Elkerston
  • Fancy Nancy: Spectacular Spectacles by Jane O'Connor and illustrated by Robin Preiss Glasser and Ted Enik
  • One Vote, Two Votes, I Vote, You Vote by Katherine Ross, and illustrated by Aristides Ruiz
  • Princess! Fairy! Ballerina! by Bethanie Deeney Murguia
  • I am Rosa Parks by Brad Meltzer and illustrated by Christopher Eliopoulos
  • I am Jackie Robinson by Brad Meltzer and illustrated by Christopher Eliopoulos
  • Aliens Love Dinopants by Claire Freedman and Ben Cort
  • Stand Tall, Molly Lou Melon by Patty Lovell and illustrated by David Catrow
  • Oh My Oh My Oh Dinosaurs! by Sandra Boynton
  • Peppa's School Day (Peppa Pig Reader) by Meredith Rusu and illustrated by Eone
  • Henry's Freedom Box: A True Story from the Underground Railroad by Ellen Levine and illustrated by Kadir Nelson
My Favorite Book Read in March: Dragon in Blood by Juliette Cross comes out on top of my March reads. Part of that was because of the awesome characters. And dragons! Half-human and dragon people, yes, but dragons nonetheless.

Mouse's Favorite Book Read in March: Princess! Fairy! Ballerina by Bethanie Deeney Murguia.

This Week:

What I Am Reading: I am in between books right now, trying to decide what to read next. Another Juliette Cross book? Or perhaps a mystery . . . I will be deciding soon.

What I Am Listening To: This past Friday I started listening to The Sense of an Ending by Julian Barnes. It's quite different than my current reads, but a nice change.

What I Am Watching: I probably won't be able to catch the season finale of The Walking Dead until the week after next. I am sad about that, and imagine I will not be able to avoid spoilers. Time After Time is intriguing me more, and I am continuing to enjoy watching The Voice. I do not really have a favorite singer yet. Is anyone watching Blacklist: Redemption? That is one I have been watching too.

What's Going On Off the Blog: It was a relatively quiet week, even with work being busy and a minor dental emergency that I had to get taken care of early in the week. Unfortunately, the temporary fix didn't last, and I am hoping the pain remains manageable until I can get back in to the dentist on Monday (and hoping my boss will let me off for an hour--Mondays we are extremely short staffed and getting approval to get off that day is next to impossible). Mouse's open house at school was this past week. Her teacher had great things to say about her--including how social she is (which is still landing her in trouble in class more often than not). My mom is coming into town this weekend for a week or so visit. Mouse has big plans for her during her spring break. I did a little big of organizing today (Saturday) as well as got some much needed errands out of the way. Next weekend will be a whirlwind one, and so we are enjoying the quiet this time around.

Around the Blogosphere:
  • The Disciple Discusses…tropes! - Now that I am back to reading romances from time to time, I have a better of idea of what tropes work and do not work for me in the genre. Samantha from opens up about which tropes work for her, and which ones don't.

This Week In Reading Mews:
Tell me about what you have been up to! What are you reading, listening to and watching? How was your week? Do you have anything planned for this coming week?

Every Friday Coffee Addicted Writer from Coffee Addicted Writer poses a question which participants respond on their own blogs within the week (Friday through Thursday). They then share their links at the main site and visit other participants blogs.

Do you visit every listed blog in the linky list when you are participating in a meme?
With most memes I participate in, I make an attempt to visit every blog that signs in on the link list. And many times, I succeed. Other times . . . Not so much. There are some memes that have too many participants for that to be possible (Top Ten Tuesday & Sunday Post, for example),  at least for me and given my online time constraints. In those instances or when I am short on time, I comment on as many blogs as I can and do my best to reciprocate by visiting blogs of those who comment on my post. Even that isn't always possible--and then I feel bad and try to make up for it when I can. I also feel guilty that I sometimes can't comment until days later . . . We all do the best we can don't we?

What about you? Do you visit everyone on the list when participating in a meme?

Every Sunday, Kendra Allen of Reads and Treats comes up with a theme for a Sunday list  of 5 things (because making lists are fun!) and asks participants to share.

Today's 5 Things on Sunday theme is  a freebie, and so I thought I would go with five random facts about me, which almost everyone probably already knows.

1. I'm a stickler for punctuality.  Although I am completely understanding about lateness-as long as the person calls or texts to let me know. I admit I have become more flexible about my own punctuality since having a child--but I still aim to be early or on time whenever I can. I just don't stress if we're running a little late.

2. My guilty pleasures: dark chocolate, blue raspberry icees and daydreaming.

3. My dad once told me he worried I wasn't tough enough to go into the profession I chose. I will have been with the same agency for 20 years this coming June.

4. I am allergic to cats. And I don't care. I love my cats.

5. I defected from Gryffindor to Ravenclaw.

I would like to know more about you too! What did you want to be when you grew up? Share a time when someone expressed concern or discouraged you from doing something you wanted to do--and  then you excelled? Which House do you belong to? What do you want me to know about you?

Thank you for helping me decide what book from my TBR collection I should read next:

My TBR List is a meme hosted by the awesome Michelle at Because Reading. It’s a fun way to choose a book from your TBR pile to read. The 1st Sunday of every month, I will list 3 books I am considering reading and take a poll as to which you think I should read. I will read the winner that month, and my review will follow. While I will attempt to post my review that same month, I make no promises--it may go up the following month.

How well do you know your neighbors? Do you think any of them could be murderers? This month's selections are all about neighbors. And Secrets.

The Killer Next Door by Alex Marwood
Goodreads Summary:
Everyone who lives at 23 Beulah Grove has a secret. If they didn't, they wouldn't be renting rooms in a dodgy old building for cash--no credit check, no lease. It's the kind of place you end up when you you've run out of other options. The six residents mostly keep to themselves, but one unbearably hot summer night, a terrible accident pushes them into an uneasy alliance. What they don't know is that one of them is a killer. He's already chosen his next victim, and he'll do anything to protect his secret.

Quiet Neighbors by Catriona McPherson
Goodreads Summary:
It’s the oldest bookshop in a town full of bookshops; rambling and disordered, full of treasures if you look hard. Jude found one of the treasures when she visited last summer, the high point of a miserable vacation. Now, in the depths of winter, when she has to run away, Lowell’s chaotic bookshop in that backwater of a town is the safe place she runs to.

Jude needs a bolt-hole; Lowell needs an assistant and, when an affordable rental is thrown in too, life begins to look up. The gravedigger’s cottage isn’t perfect for a woman alone but at least she has quiet neighbors.

Quiet, but not silent. The long dead and the books they left behind both have tales to tell and the dusty rooms of the bookshop are not the haven they seem to be. Lowell’s past and Jude’s present are a dangerous cocktail of secrets and lies and someone is coming to light the taper that could destroy everything.

The Girls Next Door by Mel Sherratt
Goodreads Summary:
One warm spring evening, five teenagers meet in a local park. Only four will come out alive.

Six months after the stabbing of sixteen-year-old Deanna Barker, someone is coming after the teenagers of Stockleigh, as a spate of vicious assaults rocks this small community. Revenge for Deanna? Or something more?

Detective Eden Berrisford is locked into a race against time to catch the twisted individual behind the attacks – but when her own niece, Jess Mountford, goes missing, the case gets personal.

With the kidnapper threatening Jess’s life, can Eden bring back her niece to safety? Or will the people of Stockleigh be forced to mourn another daughter…?

Thank you for voting!

I hope you all have a great week. Happy Reading!

The Sunday Post is hosted by the wonderful Kimba, the Caffeinated Book Reviewer, and gives us all a chance to recap our week, talk about what we are reading, share any new books that have come our way, and whatever else we want to talk about.

Stacking the Shelves is hosted by Team Tynga's Reviews and is a meme in which participants share what new books came their way recently.

  1. Read to Death looks fun because cozy. :) I haven't read a cozy in ages. I did like the first one of those series though. Sorry to hear about the tooth pain- that's often the worst. Hope you're having a good weekend and it's not bothering you too bad.

I'm not sure about TWD finale- I'm hoping for some fireworks after a whole season of leading up to it!

Tough call on your poll! I went with The Girls Next Door although I almost picked The Killer Next Door. All three sound pretty great actually.

    1. Greg - I have a lot of cozies on my shelf to get to. I can only take them in small doses, but I enjoy them when I do read them. :-)

Thank you for the well wishes. Luckily the over the counter pain medication I'm taking seems to be working enough to keep most of the pain at bay. Hopefully it will last until I can get in again to see the dentist!

I hope TWD will be full of fireworks. But I dread the cliffhanger ending . . .

Thank you for voting. I'm excited about reading all three--and may try to do so this month. We'll see.

      Thanks for visiting!

  2. Those new books look amazing! And those Childrens books.. My two sister inlaws are both pregnant so I've been visiting the Childrens books section a lot lately.. I can't get enough! Those books just all look so pretty!!
The Black Lily, sounds like a nice read!
To answer your question.. I would love to have the time to visit everyone who signed up on the memes I participate in. For now that's only the Sunday Post and there are definitely way to much participants there to visit all. So in the end I mostly visit the people I already know or who visit my blog.
Have a great week and enjoy your moms visit! ;)

    1. Maureen - Thank you! I am looking forward to reading them. My daughter seems to be drawn to the more commercially recognizable books right now. *sigh* No matter my efforts to steer her in other directions.

I just started The Black Lily and am loving it! Of course, I'm only one chapter in so far. That's a good sign though, right?

I wish I had the time to visit everyone every time too. I think we all do the best we can.

      Thank you for visiting!

  3. The Witchfinder's Sister looks good. Ooo dental emergencies make me freak out! LOL I have to go heavily medicated. Don't ya just love a book fair! My kids loved me, because I went crazy. LOL I am always early, and have to sit outside and wait. Dark chocolate and raspberry anything are a weakness of mine. Have a good time this week. Store mini bottles of wine in the cabinet of your bathroom if things get crazy with your guests..hehe.

    1. Kim - I think The Witchfinder's Sister sounds really good too. I am looking forward to reading it. I hate dental visits, even the regular kind and so am not happy to be having to deal with this current problem. Argh. Thank you for the advice! I may have to give that a try! Haha

      Thanks for visiting, Kim!

  4. My son's book fairs were always more fun for me than for him. :D Poo on having to miss TWD tomorrow. I forgot it's the season finale. I heard they canceled Time after Time - didn't even finish the season. And I picked the 2nd book for your TBR read! Have a great week!

    1. Christy - Mouse really enjoyed her book fair, fortunately. Her eyes opened wide when I told her she could get more than one book. We ended up going twice and buying books both times.

I hadn't heard that about Time After Time, but I can't say I'm surprised. Although I am beginning to like the show, it still has some things going against it.

Thank you for voting! I have read one of McPherson's novels before and really liked it. So, I have high hopes for this one too. I hope you have a great week, Christy!

  5. I'm planning on doing a blog ahead challenge this month. I'm starting to get overwhelmed with keeping up. Wow.. you read a lot of books last month. Awesome. I hope you enjoy the ones you're planning to read. Anyway, I voted for The Girls Next Door. It sounds great. :)
    Have a great week.

    1. Geybie - Blogging ahead sounds like a great idea! I've got my reviews planned out for the month and some other posts are at least in skeleton form. I have to prepare posts ahead or nothing gets posted. Usually I'm about a week or two ahead, with some last minute updates.

It was an amazing reading month for me. I am usually lucky to read four to five books a month. I think it helped this month that I read a few novellas. And pretty gripping ones at that.

Thank you for voting! I appreciate it. I hope you have a great week too!

Love Mouse's selections:).

  15. Mouse got so many great books! The best thing ever growing up was bringing home my Scholastic order form. I was relentless. lol You got a spectacular number of books read! I am on a bit of a binge myself. I hope you can get your dental emergency taken care of with minimal fuss. I feel the same way about having to take time off. It takes hours just to write up sub plans. Heaven forbid there ever IS an emergency. Happy reading!

I don't like to take time off for stuff like this--but what else can we do, right? I was so glad when the hospital started keeping Saturday and Sunday appointments. Now if only the dentist would do that too.

I hated the first episode of the new season of The Walking Dead and it took me awhile to come around again, but I did. I actually like that this season has been quieter in many ways. Although, I admit it seems like nothing much happened. I thought the season finale was very good. And I liked how it left things. We deserved that after that season premiere.

Thank you. I was able to get into see the dentist today and now just to hang on to my new temporary until a permanent one can be put in place.

Thank you for the book recommendation! I am always on the look out for book suggestions. I hope you have a great Sunday too!

  26. Oh, Wendy!! Mouse must have SQUEALED in delight when she got all of those GREAT books!! I can almost smell that new book smell all the way from here!! Lol. This brings back memories of when I used to get my own haul from Scholastic, back in 7th & 8th grades....sigh....those were the days!!

And then, right after your daughter's books, we who LOVE romance novels get treated to that YUMMY cover for "The Black Lily"! And you read some of Juliette Cross's other books, too, so I will definitely add them to my Goodreads shelves!!

How nice that Ms. Cross left a comment on this post! That was very sweet of her! Not many authors do that kind of thing, I can tell you!

The other books you got look GREAT, too! And I LOVE the cover of "The Waking Land"!! VERY striking!!

I'm so sorry about your dental emergency.....and I sure hope your boss will let you go to the dentist in a few hours. (Yes, it's already Monday here in Miami, lol.) Even if your office is extremely busy on Mondays, and you guys are short staffed, it wouldn't be fair for you to have to work all day in pain. But I'm sure your boss will allow you to go. Perhaps you can make up the time by staying overtime the next day, as I imagine you'd be going back home after the dentist visit, if you receive painkiller prescriptions. If not, then of course you can go back to work that day. Crossing my fingers that everything turns out okay for you, Wendy!! <3 <3 <3

Your answer to the BBH question is great! I agree with everything you've stated. Memes with LOTS of participants make it very hard indeed to visit all of the blogs that have linked up.

I briefly participated in "The Sunday Post" (3 Sundays, lol), but felt it was much too daunting because of all the blogs linking up! Besides, I did not get return comments from several blogs that I visited, so I said to myself, "Forget it!", and stopped joining in. It really ticks me off when I comment on a blog, and they don't comment back! If they can't reply to my comment on their blog, that's fine. Not everyone has the time to both reply to comments on their own blog, and then comment back. But they should at least comment back, ESPECIALLY if they're joining a meme! So I GREATLY appreciate that you ALWAYS comment back, Wendy!! <3 <3 <3

BTW, I, too, feel a little guilty when I don't comment back right away, especially if several days go by. But I DO try to comment back, every single time!

I love your answers to the "5 Things on Sunday" post! I just cracked up when you stated that you're allergic to cats, but love them anyway! And you defected from Gryffindor to Ravenclaw! Lol. I will always remain loyal to Gryffindor! :) :) :) But I'm glad you went to Ravenclaw, and not Slytherin!!

And now to answer the question of what I wanted to be when I grew up.... Well, at one point, I was SURE I was going to be a jockey, since I ADORE horses. I was too tall for that, though. That was when I was in my horse book reading phase. Then I got hooked on SF, and decided i wanted to be an astronaut.... Sometime in high school I began to think of being a writer. Then I started college, and majored in Fine Arts. But I must admit to a LOT of self=doubt about that.... so I haven't done much with it. I have also written some poetry, off and on. I might go back to that. My two blogs (one of which is sadly neglected) are my sole creative outlet right now.

Last but definitely NOT least, I've decided not to vote in the current TBR poll, as I don't know which book to pick. I don't like any of them, but I should really consider what YOU would probably enjoy reading. Still, I can't make up my mind! Lol.

Thanks for sharing all of your news, bookish or not!! Also, thanks for ALWAYS leaving such GREAT comments on my BBH posts!! Have an AWESOME week, with NO dental pain!! HUGS TO YOU & MOUSE!!! <3 <3 <3 :) :) :)

    1. Hi, Maria! I did get a wide-eyed double take when I told my daughter she could bring four books home instead of just two the final day of the book fair (the rest I let her get when it first opened a few days before that). :-)

I seem to go through phases when it comes to romance. Although I do favor fantasy romance or paranormal romance to contemporary when it comes right down to it (although I like the other too, just not as much). I am reading The Black Lily right now and really enjoying it. It is a re-telling of Cinderella, but with a definite kick--or bite, if you prefer. It was really nice of the author to visit and comment. It made my weekend.

I was able to go to the dentist today, thankfully. I go back in another two weeks and hopefully won't have to worry about further dental issues for awhile. I am not a fan of the dentist's office. (Although the staff there are very nice.) I'm fortunate that my dentist's office is not too far from where I work.

I participated in the Sunday Salon for a number of years and really enjoyed it. I got out of the habit though because posting on Sundays can be tough for me. I don't always have the time on the weekends to get on the computer. I switched to the Sunday Post when I came back (and because the Sunday Salon moved to FB). I follow and interact with quite a few bloggers who take part in the Sunday Post or their own versions, and so it seemed like a good fit for me as well. I'm sorry you didn't have much luck with it. Sometimes it just takes persistence and finding the right bloggers who will comment back. I admit I sometimes don't get to everyone's blog or even respond to comments until days or a week or two later. Fortunately most people are understanding. Actually, I don't think I've run into anyone who isn't!

I would not give up my cats for the world--not even for my allergies. :-)

Being a jockey would be an interesting job, I think. I wanted to be a teacher when I was five, but that eventually changed. I wanted to be a child psychologist for a number of years, but it wasn't meant to be.

It's okay if you don't want to vote. It's a hard choice. :-)

Have a great week and thank you for visiting, Maria!

  29. The Prime Minister's Secret Agent looks like a book I would enjoy. Also...The Killer Next Door.

Lovely books for your daughter and for you. Enjoy!

Most people would have predicted a different career for me, too (social work), but I did that job for 30 years...

I love my daily life more now, however. Quiet, lots of reading time, blogging...another kind of life.

Thanks for sharing...and here are MY WEEKLY UPDATES

I do look forward to a quieter life one of these days, but probably not until my daughter is grown up. :-)

I hope you have a great week! Thank you for visiting, Laurel-Rain.

  30. Wendy, I am blown away by how much you read. You must be a fast reader like my boyfriend and daughter-in-law. OH, how I wish I could read more than at average speed.

And when I first signed up on Pottermore when it first launched, I was (am) a Hufflepuff. Then when they changed the whole site and opened the Ilvermorny school sorting, I couldn't figure out how to answer the questions properly so needed to re-register to do it authentically so when I did it again, I ended up as a Ravenclaw. I also came out in two different houses in Ilvermorny each time, the first being Pukwudgie, the second as Horned Serpent. I have different patronuses on both too. It's all so much fun, but I rarely get to visit.

    1. Donna Marie - I swear this month's reading was just a fluke. I don't normally read that much. And it helped that several of the Cross books were novellas. :-)

I haven't tried to be sorted for Ilvermorny. I'll have to do that and see what I get. I'm a sucker for quizzes like that. I don't visit the Pottermore site very often either. It is fun though.

I hope you have a great week! Thank you for visiting, Donna Marie.
