Where Is Your Bookmark? (03/31/2015)

Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by the lovely ladies at Broke and Bookish.

This week's Top Ten Tuesday theme is Ten Books You Recently Added To Your To-Be-Read List. I differentiate between my TBR list and Wishlist, which I know a lot of people don't do. Anytime I mention my TBR list or pile, it includes books I already have on hand.  Books I want to read, but do not yet have on hand go on the Wishlist. With that in mind, these are books were the most recently added to my TBR pile:

1. Dark Alchemy by Laura Bickle (bought on recommendation of Samantha of Booked On a Feeling)

2. Copperhead by Tina Connolly (purchased)

3. A Small Indiscretion by Jan Ellison (review copy via publicist)

4. Come Winter by Clare Guiterrez (review copy via NetGalley)

5. The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah (won in a giveaway hosted by Beth F of Beth Fish Reads)

6. The Killing Moon by J.K. Jemisin (purchased)

7. Making Your Mind Up by Jill Mansell (review copy via NetGalley)

8. Daughter by Jane Shemilt (review copy from publisher)

9. The Story Hour by Thrity Umrigar (gift from friend)

10. The Sound of Glass by Karen White (review copy via NetGalley)

Have you read any of these books?  If so, what did you think?

Every Tuesday Diane from Bibliophile By the Sea hosts
First Chapter First Paragraph Tuesday Intros, where
participants share the first paragraph (or a few) of a
book they are reading or thinking about reading soon.

I am currently in the middle of two books. My husband and I are still reading Jane Eyre. I have reached the point where Jane is engaged to be married, right before the big climax that will shake her world. I know it will be impossible to stop reading if I continue--and I want my husband to have a chance to catch up first. He's actually not far behind me, so it won't be long.

After reading Elizabeth Haynes' Behind Closed Doors, I decided I needed something light and picked up a historical romance novel, A Touch of Passion by Bronwen Evans. Set in 1813 England, it is the story of a high spirited lady who won't bow down to convention and a Viscount who values honor and integrity above all else. They make an unlikely pair, but the attraction between them and a possible scandal that would put both their reputations on the line can't keep them apart. Here is a sample from the opening:
Cyprians' Ball, London 1813
"I'm surprised Lord Blackwood has graced us with his presence. It's common knowledge he's enamored with the French ballerina Juliette Panache. I doubt he's in the market for another mistress."
"With his appetites, he no doubt has a stable of mistresses."
Would you continue reading?

Openings about a men's prowess in bed (which soon followed the above) are not the kind that win me over immediately, I am afraid. I do like that the two protagonists grew up together--Blackwood being the brother's best friend. I enjoy those types of romances. I had hoped this one would grow on me, but at 41% in on my Kindle, I decided it was time to move on to another book. There was no chemistry between the character and me. I am sure this one will appeal to some historical romance readers out there.  It just wasn't for me.

What are you reading at the moment?  Is it something you would recommend?

  2. You've a great list there, Wendy! I hope you'll enjoy reading "Daughter" as much as I did.

I'm currently reading "The Pocket Wife" by Susan Crawford. Very interesting characterisations and not to mention unreliable, too. I can't wait to see how it'd end.

I want to read The Pocket Wife at some point. It sounds like it will be good.

  3. I really enjoyed The Nightingale, congratulations on winning your copy. Sorry to hear the historical romance you picked wasn't for you - here is my Tuesday post https://cleopatralovesbooks.wordpress.com/2015/03/31/first-chapter-first-paragraph-march-31/

    1. Cleo - I am glad to hear you enjoyed The Nightingale. I am excited to read it. It's been forever since I last won a giveaway--but then, I enter so few these days (let's pretend it's that and not just bad luck. LOL).

  4. I'm very fussy about historical romances. I'm afraid the only must-read author in that genre for me is Courtney Milan. Have you tried her?

    1. Suzie - I haven't read anything by Courtney Milan, although I have heard the name (mostly, I think, because of the Ellora Cave situation). I will look for her books and give her a try since you recommend her work. Thank you for the recommendation!

  5. Like you, I differentiate between books I have on my physical stacks vs. those I wish for.

I just got that Karen White book today from NetGalley, my first NG download! My previous Kindle didn't accept these downloads, but my Paperwhite (Pippa) was more than happy to take it in...LOL.

I am not sure about historical romances, although they do make a nice change from thrillers. Thanks for sharing...and for visiting my blog.

    1. Laurel-Rain - I hope we both enjoy The Sound of Glass! I'm looking forward to reading it. I love the name of your Paperwhite. :-) Mine's name is Charlotte.

I thought maybe the romance would be a nice change after a dark mystery/thriller, but the book and I didn't get along. I am really enjoying my current book though. It's not a romance, although it is part love story.

  7. Although I probably would not read your intro pick, I do love the sound of many on your top 10 list. The Sound of Glass has the prettiest cover!

    1. Diane - Sometimes a book just doesn't work out, does it? I moved on and was happier for it.

I really like the cover of The Sound of Glass too!

  8. I totally get what you mean about the beginning! When you're reading a romance novel you want to be seduced as much as the main character and when it's all about his skills in bed you're not necessarily wowed! All your next To-Be-Read books look amazing! Thanks for sharing :) I hope you have a great week!

    1. Juli - What a good way of putting it! It's hard to buy into a romance if you are already put off off the main character from the beginning. I had hoped it would get better, and to some extent it did--just not enough.

  9. Those are some great looking books! I especially love the cover of Daughter! I should revisit Jane Eyre someday. I read it when I was in school and came off it feeling wowed - I don't think I've ever read it since. I'm curious what the adult-me will think about it.

    1. Athira - I was a little nervous about reading Jane Eyre again, afraid it wouldn't live up to my memories of it. It does though. This is my third time reading it, but the last time was about 20 years ago. I'm in a lot different place now than I was then.

  11. I liked The Daughter and have a couple of others on my radar to try to read. Decided to skip the Top Ten this week as what I listed as my TBR a couple of weeks ago was pretty much complete.

I don't read much historical romance any more. Or really romance of any kind. I used to and may again at some point. So, don't think I would pick up the one you shared. I like a nice murder or serial killer. ;-)

    1. Kay - I am glad to hear so many people enjoyed The Daughter! I've only recently got back into reading romance. I have to spread out my romance reading or risk burn out, but sometimes I find a romance novel is just what I need mentally.

  12. I have A Small Indiscretion as well and The Sound of Glass looks good. I love a good historical romance with a London setting. Enjoy!

    1. Naida - I should be starting A Small Indiscretion soon. I was going to read it after I finish my current read, but I need to get to my postal book group pick next or else it won't get out in the mail to the next person on time.

  13. I'm picky about my historical romance as well and this doesn't sound like it would've worked for me either. Have you tried Julia Quinn or Lisa Kleypas? I also like Laura Lee Gurhke and Sabrina Jeffries. Great list! Congratulations on winning The Nightingale! That one looks good as does Daughter and The Sound of Glass. I'm looking forward to Making Your Mind Up as well!

    1. Katherine - I'm finding I am picky about historical romance too. I haven't tried Julia Quinn or Lisa Kleypas, but I would like to. Thank you for the recommendations!

I am looking forward to reading The Nightingale, Daughter and The Sound of Glass. Making Your Mind Up will be my first Mansell. I look forward to reading your thoughts on it!

    1. Margot - It didn't grab me either, I'm afraid. I had really hoped it would.

    1. Topazshell - I enjoy a good historical fiction novel, but I think this one just wasn't for me.

  18. I sometimes enjoy historical romances, but I don't like stereotypical characters. Seems like almost all the heroines are "spirited" or "hellions" and the heroes are "rakes." Sorry to hear that this book was a disappointment.
I've added several books from your TBR list to mine!
My Tuesday post features THE ROSIE PROJECT.

    1. Sandra - Haha! I know what you mean about stereotypical characters. I had a similar conversation with my husband while I was reading A Touch of Passion.

  19. The Nightingale sounds so good! Now I'm reading Ghost Story by Peter Straub; very creepy but good! I'm not much on romances anyway, so I of course will tell you it's OK to stop reading the book. If you can't connect with characters at almost halfway through the story, it's time to let it go! :)

    1. Maggie -When I was really into Dean Koontz, Peter Straub was on my list of authors to try, but I still have managed to read anything by him. I am glad you enjoyed his book!

I'm surprised I made it that far into the book before letting it go.
