Where Is Your Bookmark? (08/26/2014)

My cold turned out to be an out of season flu bug that knocked me off my feet for a few days, took my daughter hostage and has now, at least for her, turned into pneumonia.  I'm just left with the cough and runny nose. Unfortunately she is still fighting a fever and infection (fingers crossed the antibiotics wipe it out soon!). My mother's visit was dampened by our illnesses this past weekend, but we made the most of it nonetheless, celebrating her birthday.  It was just low key, is all.  Between cuddles and fights to get my daughter to take her medicine, we enjoyed cake, presents and balloons.

My brain is still a big foggy, and, as you can imagine, my attention is mostly on Mouse right now, but I am muddling through.  Alas, not much reading got done.  And no blog visiting.  If I am scarce this week, you understand why.  I did finish Joshilyn Jackson's Someone Else's Love Story, although I am not much farther into Further Out Than You Thought by Michaela Carter than last we visited together.

I am nearly one with The Night Visitor by Dianne Emley, which I am reviewing in an upcoming tour.  It's a mystery with a definite paranormal twist: a woman is possessed (sort of) but her ex-boyfriend and sets out to find his and her sister's murderer.  It's interesting so far, and a fairly quick read.

What are you reading at the moment?  Is it something you would recommend?

Every Tuesday Diane from Bibliophile By the Sea hosts
First Chapter First Paragraph Tuesday Intros, where
participants share the first paragraph (or a few) of a
book they are reading or thinking about reading soon.

Here is a taste of the opening of Dianne Emley's The Night Visitor:
Junior Lara saw the doves and knew something was wrong. They were loose inside the loft, flying in crazy circles, their beating wings stirring the air, scenting it with musk.
A gust of warm wind blew through the open windows. It carried a trace of something sweets and earthy.
The back of Junior's neck prickled. He stood with his hand against the edge of the antique elevator's door, hesitating before stepping into his loft apartment.
 Would you continue reading?

  1. I'm sorry to hear about your flu. I hope you are feeling better and do get well soon! As always, your daughter is super cute with that gigantic balloon. Happy birthday to Mouse!

    1. Alice - Thank you. If I can just beat this cough . . . Mouse loved picking out the balloon for her grandmother. She ended up keeping it (because we all know the balloon was really for her--even though it wasn't her birthday). :-)

  2. Little kids always pick up every bug going around, and ultimately everyone gets it. It does get a little better once they get older...they are more immune to these things. So sorry she is sick again, and I hope the antibiotics do their thing! Didn't you love JJ? I love each and every one of her books. Just finished "The Colour of Milk" (charming but heartbreaking) and "You Should Have Known" on audio (I had issues with this one). Get better soon guys!

    1. Sandy - Thanks! And I can't blame the daycare for this one. I brought this bug home. :-( The antibiotics worked very well, fortunately (she's still on them, but the fever is completely gone).

I really liked Jackson's writing style. I'll have to look for The Colour of Milk. Charming and heartbreaking sounds up my alley. :-)

  3. Oh no, so sorry about your daughter's illness - hope she is better soon. That balloon is so cool!

As for the intro, it did draw me in; I'd read more for sure, so hopping it is a good one.

    1. Diane - Thank you. She's doing much better. Still tires easily, but otherwise seems back to her old self. :-) The balloon is quite popular in our house still. Haha

  4. Hope you and the little one are feeling better! It's awful getting sick, then when the kids get sick too, it's so much worse.
If you do find the time to read, The Night Visitor sounds like a good one.

I managed to finish The Night Visitor and begin another book. I have a dentist appointment tomorrow and am hoping to get some reading in while I wait.

  6. So sorry to hear about your illness. I'm glad you are well on the road to recovery and wish the same for Mouse.

As I'm frightened of birds these doves flying crazily like this is the stuff of my nightmares so I don't think I'd fare very well with this one.

Having been a bit disappointed with the last Faye Kellerman book I read I'm now reading the next one in the series which so far sees her back on form.

    Best wishes, Tracy.

Luckily, the doves aren't a big part of the story. :-)

  9. I hope you and your daughter are soon back to 100%. Too bad you were sick during your mother's visit.

The NIght Visitor sounds like a good story. I'd keep reading to find out why the doves were flying around the loft and to discover what happens next.

Today I’m featuring THE MERMAID GARDEN.

I wish I had liked The Night Visitor more than I did. It's gotten great reviews, at least.

I think I would still keep reading to see what was going to happen, sort of creepy. I have Someone Else's Love Story on my kindle. Looking forward to your reviews when you feel up to it!

    1. Rita - Thank you. We are both doing better. Fortunately the worst of it for me had passed before she got sick. And somehow my husband so far has managed to avoid it. He was a big help.

The Night Visitor was a bit creepy. More suspenseful, I think.

  19. So sorry to hear you had the flu and even sorrier to hear that Mouse's turned into pneumonia. I had it once back in college and it was awful. Hopefully the antibiotics will do their thing quick and it's always amazing how quickly the little ones get better! Get some rest yourself!

    1. Katherine - This is Mouse's second bout of pneumonia. She's been lucky both times in that we caught it really early so it's only been mild cases. Still, no one likes to hear that as their diagnosis!
