That Long Overdue Reading Day is Here!

Sometimes a person has to put a positive spin on the negative. Instead of crying over the loss of income I would have when the furloughs began last August, I dreamt of all that extra reading time. Instead of working, I could read! It hasn't worked out that way. Far from it. There is always something to do, something I must do. Now that rumors are flying that the furloughs will end the end of June, I wish I'd taken better advantage of the extra time away from the office.

I am making today a reading only day. I won't clean the house or run errands. I will keep off the computer. Well, mostly. I will stay in my pajamas for a good part of the morning (maybe all day if I feel like it!), cuddle close with my two cats and my dog, and I will read.

I won't feel guilty. I won't think of all the house work that needs to be done or the other stuff I should be taking care of. I am going to make up for a little lost reading time. Just me, my animals, and my book (sorry you are stuck at work today, Honey).

When was the last time you were able to devote an entire day to reading? Was it the read-a-thon? Or are you able to regularly take time out to keep a date with a book or two?

A whole day just reading? I can't remember when I last had time for that. I'll be lucky if I can read for 2 hours at a stretch. But then something comes up and I have to put the book back down. And under the week, I'm normally too tired from work to read more than a couple of chapters. Wow, I really need a holiday, a reading holiday. Enjoy your reading day!

  3. I think the last time I could just read all day was during my college years, on vacation days. No kids to clean up after, dishes to wash, etc! it's been a long time... I'm envious of your reading day!

  4. What a wonderful way to spend your day! I consider myself incredibly lucky in that I have much time to devote to reading, and I appreciate every moment of it!

  7. Sounds like a perfect day. I am long overdue for a day like this. I'm hoping I might be able to sneak one in this Saturday. Enjoy your day of reading...guilt free!

  8. Wow, that sounds like the best day ever! I haven't had a day like that in AGES- every single day is so full of homeschooling, cooking, cleaning, errands, etc., I barely have reading time left these days. Not like I used to, anyway. Enjoy your day! ;)

  9. Sounds like a great plan, Wendy!
With work and family commitments going around, having a day off so I can spend time doing my own stuff is a wish come true to me. :P Now that you mentioned it, I think I might want to take a day off of work one of these days so I can read to my heart's content at home, even if it's only for a day. :D

  10. A whole day I can't do, but usually on a weekend morning I can manage a few hours. It's heaven! I hope your reading day was great!

  12. I usually try to make a weekend day all mine. I will do laundry and stuff like that but I always make time for reading no matter what!

  13. It can be difficult to take advantage of "found" free time with something other than errands (or too much computer time). And then there are times when the book is just so compelling that every free second is stuck in the book.

  14. cool, I used to dream of days like these when I had a job, now that I have shifted to Singapore and am still looking for a job I do get to read entire day if I want to.

    Enjoy your day!!!

  15. Well, yay for the (possible) end of furloughs! I probably would have put a similar positive spin on my (unpaid) days off, if I had them - and accomplished just about as much reading :-).

The Read-a-thon was my last full day of reading, and I didn't even get a full day in last time. Hope you enjoyed yours, Wendy!

  16. I can't remember the last time I had a reading day like that. Sounds like bliss though. Enjoy!

  17. I love the idea!! I usually only indulge in this pleasure when I'm sick, but I think I may try and set more regular time aside. I found your post from Bloggy Happenings on 'Til We Read Again :)

  18. I always plan for long stretches of reading time and get really excited about it, and then discover all kinds of things that I have to do instead. I would love a day of solid, uninterrupted reading time, but that seems like it might be a pipe dream for me! Good luck on your reading day!!

  21. It sounds fabulous!

The last time I had an entire day of reading was last month. On those days that I was suffering from my tooth abscess (and my husband was home) I took pain medicine, crawled in bed and read as much as I could (and watched/listened to classic movies on other days when the pain was worse). If it wouldn't have been for the pain it would have been like a lovely vacation.

  22. I love reading day...or even a reading half day...I talk myself into doing the stuff I need to do around the house...quickly and in my jammies...and then race back to bed with more coffee...freshly brewed...a warm Tonkinese kitty and my Kindle...yum...for at least until noon or so...

  24. What a wonderful idea! The last time I devoted a day to reading it was the last read-a-thon. I think this Wednesday will be my day to drop everything and read. Have fun!

  26. Kathy - A day reading at the beach sounds nice. I'm not one to sit in the sun for long so I imagine if I did that, I'd have to find a nice cool shady spot.

Susi - That's how it usually is for me too, Susi. I try and fit in reading when I can, usually in little spurts.

Jeane - There's a lot I should have been doing that day, but I decided to put reading first. :-)

Charley - Oh yes! Every minute is precious. :-)

Molly - I did change into my stay-at-home clothes at some point, but I really enjoyed the day.

Jill - I wish I could do that more often!

  27. Kathleen - I hope you got your reading day, Kathleen!

Stephanie - It can be hard to fit in reading time, I know. You just do the best you can.

Melody - That sounds like a good plan!

Donna - A few hours is good too, I think. :-)

Anjin - It was fun. I'm just sorry you couldn't be home reading with me. :-)

Staci - That's smart. I always start out with that intention but it rarely works out the way I intend.

  28. Thomas - The computer can be a real time suck if I'm not careful.

I love it when a book pulls me in and I can't tear myself away.

    Violet - Lucky you!

Florinda - Word is the end is in sight. I'm not sure I'll believe it until it happens though. Fingers crossed!

Marg - It was so nice! It felt good to spend time reading like that.

Lily - It's nice when you can set time aside to read like that. I was so mad the last time I had to miss work because I was sick. I was too sick to read. :-(

    Thank you for stopping by!

Heather - That's exactly what happens to me! I plan to read for a chunk of time and then I end up having to take care of other things.

  29. Bobbie - Thank you so much for linking my blog on your new feature!

Ana - Thank you! It was a great way to spend the day.

Alyce - I'm glad you were able to read despite the pain, Alyce. Hopefully the tooth isn't bothering you anymore.

Patty - A half a day is nice too! :-)

Natalie - I wish everyone could have a reading day now and then. Thank you for visiting!

Framed - I just wish I'd taken advantage of the time sooner!

  30. Vasilly - I hope you were able to have a reading day like you planned, Vasilly! Moments like that shouldn't be passed up.

Nicole - Thanks! I have a bunch of tags like that from my MSN group days. :-)
